AUM, the word is all this (i.e. the whole universe). An explanation of it is as

follows: All that is past, present and future is indeed, AUM. And whatever e lse

is, beyond the three-fold division of time- that also is truly AUM.

    Annapurna R.Annapurna R.Annapurna R.Annapurna R.Annapurna R.

Since the evil begets evil, evil is more dreaded than fire.

It is never too early to teach the value

of money, how to budget and save. One

can learn a whole lot of financing from

books and software but nothing like a

hands-on approach in learning this most

important lesson of life. And that is

exactly the new project at Tapovans

Vidya Mandir. Kudos to Swamijis idea

    of introducing Tapovans own banking

    system.

Many of the needs of Vidya Mandir

students are taken care of by Nachiketa

Tapovan and the well wishers besides

    their parents. Swamiji observed that

    sometimes the children have some

petty earnings with which they are

buying fun food from vendors and shops

which could be unhygienic. That is how

He got this idea of introducing the Pass

Book Savings account for each of the

    fifty students attending 4th, 5th and 6th

Classes. And we all know very well that

Swamijis ideas dont remain ideas for

too long! So the Nachiketa Tapovan

Passbook was launched on the August

15th and accounts became active on the

17 th August with a message from

Swamiji on how they can be of help to

their good friends if they have some

cash of their own. Next time you visit

Tapovan you will see a Banking desk

    which is operative during non-class

hours. The children can deposit and

withdraw money bound to some terms

and conditions. The best part is the

    oldest students are receiving training

in making entries and maintaining the

    accounts.

We all worry about saving money and

securing a future for our children but

the real benefit lies in letting them learn

the importance of saving money. This

should be an eye-opener for many of us

in fortifying the children with the value

of money before they enter the real

    world.

    PENNY WISE

4The biggest folly among follies is to cherish a desire for a

    prohibited object.

    KRISHNA

    Swami Shivanandamayi

    Mukam Karothi vachalam

    pangum langayate girim

    yatkrupa tamaham vande

paramanandava MadhavamMeaning: The dumb can start

speaking, and the lame can climb the

mountains, if they have the grace of that

    Madhava.

The name of Krishna is sweeter than

any thing else in this world.

Janmashtami is the day when Krishna

    incarnated on this earth.

Some people opine that Krishna was

only a skilful king and not an incarnation.

If you look at the annals of history, we

had many kings but we dont celebrate

    their birthdays. Though Krishna lived

5000 years ago, his birthday is

    celebrated with great pomp and

splendor. Sri Krishna is a Poornavatar.

    Putanavada, Sarvaloka sandarshanam,

    Kaliyamardhanam, Govardhana puja,

and Kamsavadha are but some of his

many leelas. Amongst all the nine

    incarnations,Krishnavatar shines like a

    KAUSTUBHA MANI.

His Bhagavad Gita is not a mereshastra. It is a way of life. It is the

    perfect guideline to aspirants, showing

them the various paths to reach the

    ultimate. That ultimate knowledge

was given to the humanity by Sri

Krishna for which he is universally

acclaimed as Jagatguru. His nama is a

sadhana for sadhakas and an ocean of

    happiness to the bhaktas.

Many bhaktas like Rukmini, Meera,Sakkubai, Tukaram, Jayadeva, and

    Vittala have experienced Krishna by

singing his name and glory alone.

Surdas was blind, but when he started

chanting Krishna Nama he got that

real, true vision, and he rejected the

physical vision. Just by having physical

eye we can not have that true vision.

For that we need to have the grace of

    Sri Krishna.

That grace dawns on us when wehave that Shraddha and Bhakti .

Krishnas existence is not limited to the

Dwapara yuga, or the temples. He is

    Sarvantharyami. Janmashtami reminds

    us to awaken that Krishna

    consciousness within. When you awake

that Krishna within with the help of

Shraddha and Bhakti then that day will

be a real Janmashtami in your life. Let

us celebrate Janmashtami by singing his

Nama. Jai Sri Krishna, Jai Sri Krishna

    Mere independence from the

British rule was not the objective

of the freedom struggle. It is

    necessary to introspect whether

we have the real freedom we set

    for ourselves after gaining

    independence. - Swamiji

    On this joyous event Swamiji

introduced Banking system to thestudents and released a Passbook.

    Children voluntarily responded by

promising to save their little extra

    money. Prizes were awarded for

the best essays and paintings and

the children were happy to receive

    gifts from Intelligroup volunteers

    who gave them the best

    entertainment.

    CELEBRATIONS

    A feeling of patriotism overwhelmed

    Nachiketa Tapovans team as they

    celebrated Indias 63rd Independence

Day. The Tricolour National flag washoisted by Sri Ajit of Intelligroup assisted

by Swamiji and Mataji. If Swamijis

    motivating talk on Freedom and

patriotic songs by children set the tone

for this great event, Vidya Mandir

children stole the limelight with their

    scintillating dance performance and

smart and quick replies when quizzed

    by Intelligroup volunteers.

Long years ago, we made a tryst

with destiny and now the time comes

when we shall redeem our pledge...At

the stroke of the midnight hour, when

the world sleeps, India will awake to

    life and freedom. - Nehru

8 9Let the thoughts be always great and progressive. It will not be

a loss, even if success eludes.

There is nothing too difficult to be accomplished, whendone carefully with unflinching endeavour.

    Lord krishna is a multifaceted

personality who at one end reveals the

ultimate reality of life and at the other

end is known for his childhood pranks,

    mischief and romantic tales. His

    birthday is celebrated as Janmashtami

all over the country on the eighth day

of the dark fortnight in the month of

    Sravana.

The fervour was no less in Nachiketa

Tapovan which is the traditional hubof celebrations. Entire premises wore

a festive look on August 14th with

    children moving around in colourful

dresses and govinda namam on their

    foreheads. The extraordinarily

charming deity of Lord Krishna was

decked up with jewellery and rangolis

of His footprints we re drawn by

    residential volunteers symbolising the

    presence of the Almighty. Plays

    depicting various events and

    accomplishments of Lord Krishna were

    staged by Vidya mandir children.

Mataji announced prizes for the best

articles on Lord Krishna and the winners

    gave their presentations. Children had

the great fortune of breaking Dahihandis along with Swamiji who is

    Tapovans Krishna indeed! This sport

    symbolized achievement through unity.

    Specially prepared delicacies which

were offered as bhog were distributed

to mark the end of celebrations.

welcome from everyone. They can be

    SPIRITUAL QUEST

    Q. What happens after death?

Ans: Instead of knowing what happens

after death, it is more important toknow what death is. Death for whom?

To this body, to this ego or to the soul?

If you are asking about body then yes

body is going to once again merge with

the five elements as it is made of earth,

water, air, space and fire. But after

that still something remains and that

is soul and there is no death for soul.

Soul travels from one body to another

body. The death of ego will bring more

clarity in life. Life and death are the

two ends of the same circle and from

where it starts and where it ends is

    not known to ordinary perception.

Death for this body is inevitable. That

death is called as transformation of

body. When traveling from one place

to another if we are in a drowsy state

we are not aware of the journey fully

and the places we pass. Similarly it is

with our journey into life and death. If

we are not aware of and not fully

conscious then you will not be able toknow this very life, forget about

    previous lives. Constant awareness is

the means to know what happens

after death. That awareness which lies

within can be ignited through different

    techniques.

    Q. Presuming that every action is

    predestined; can an unmeditated

act of killing an animal or insect

    affect us?

Ans: We need to know the exact

    relationship between cause and

effect. Effect follows you like a

shadow. The moment you get the light

of action it is bound to create an effect

    of shadow.

There are different types of people

    and their actions.

Ordinary people: Want to see the

    Effect immediately. They are result

oriented and do not bother muchabout consequences. Life is lead like

a spiritual life but is indeed not a

    spiritual life.

    Extra-ordinary people: Know the

    consequences of their actions very

well. They are very well prepared for

the consequences and do their best

    possible in their lives.

    Spiritual people: Know everything.

They are content with life and accept

    everything without expecting

anything in return. In such peoplesamskaras work like camphor which

    burns without leaving any trace.

    Therefore ordinary people and even

    extra-ordinary people will get

    affected by their actions whereas

    spiritual people do not.

The deeper you dig, greater the spring; the more you learn, greater the knowledge.

10Art of using alphabets and science of using

numerals are the two eyes of living human beings.

Mandukya Upanishad is a part of the

Atharvaveda. It is a very short

Upanishad consisting of only 12 bare

verses with no stories or anecdotes but

    which when aptly interpreted unravel

to the reader the entire Universe.

Om is the only comprehensive language

revealed to the ancient Rishis that can

    comprehend the universal form, the

    Isvara. Chanting Om creates a

    vibration with which the creation

commenced a vibration, that melts all

other vibrations, calms the mind by

burning up all the desires and ends all

cravings and whence you enter ameditative mood. Om is the substratum

of all sounds and Brahman is the

    substratum of all phenomena. The

sounds and phenomena are both illusory

    and are non-different. Therefore when

the illusion disappears all that is left is

    substratum which is one. Therefore

    Brahman is Aum.

The Atman which indeed is Brahman

has four padas or quarters. They are

Vaisvanara or the waking state, is

represented by matra A. The subjector the perceiver is conscious of external

objects and the Atman identifies itself

    with the experiencer.

Taijasa or the dream state, represented

by matra U. The perceiver is

conscious of the internal objects or the

subtle objects. The sense organs of a

sleeping man are inactive, so a dream

    is but a mental activity.

Prajna or the dreamless sleep state

represented by matra M is a state

    characterized by general

consciousness. Deep sleep is a state

of ease and repose when all effort,

    discriminative knowledge and subject-

    object relationships disappear and the

    subject experiences bliss.

    The above three states are

    superimposed on Brahman through

Avidya and abide the causal law.

Turiya or the state of Pure

    Consciousness, represented by

amatra or Silence is free from

causality. Turiya state is devoid of

dreams as well as sleep. The subject is

    conscious of neither the outer

objective world nor the innersubjective world. This state cannot be

attained through avidya. It is not void

but is a state of positive existence

which can only be realized. This state

of non-duality cannot be expressed in

any language, so it is described

through negation of attributes. It is

the cessation of all phenomena, is all

peace and all bliss. Though non-

cognition of duality is common to both

Prajna and Turiya, the latter is

different from Prajna in beingomniscient while Prajna is

    characterized by complete

    ignorance.

    DearAtman

No man is an island. To fight the good

fight we need help. This has been the

    basis for the Nachiketa Tapovans

inception and ensuing growth over the

last 10 years from a hut into a 3 storied-

building onto a 40 acre spiritual

    complex. Imparting literacy to children

from impoverished families was the idea

with which the divine project started

before it grew into a multifarious

    movement. All along Tapovans efforts

received great support from you all in

every way bringing fruition to the noble

    intent..

The main focus has never shifted from

    Vidya Mandir. Nachiketa Tapovan has

    become the haven for the

    underprivileged children who have

been nourished with not only milk and

food but also good academicssupplemented by the traditional values

of India. Vidya Mandir will be taking a

big stride this June from offering

    Primary Education extending onto

    Secondary Education. That is, this

academic year, Vidya Mandir will offer

classes ranging from LKG through 6th

    grade.

    It requires additional resources, both

monetary as well as human to fund this

progressive step. We hereby make a

    fervent appeal for generous donations.

Please participate in this Vidya Daana

Yaga being performed to benefit the

most deserving children and help passon the legacy of our Cultural heritage,

    Social values and Religious traditions.

It may kindly be noted that donations
