NLP & LANGUAGE LEARNING
MARCELA GATICA
TEACHER: PAULA MORALES
CONCEPCIÓN, NOVEMBER 2013
Trough the time many linguists and teachers have tried to help with the educational
process, there has appeared many researches on language learning and professional
development, who propose many ideas and tools for promoting a good teaching in the
classroom and engage students’ mind.
But not only teachers have proposes ideas and models, NLP (1970) is a neuro-linguistic
programme developed at the University of California, and this model has become
popular, why? Because it links the internal knowledge of a person with his/her
expression of this knowledge, in other words, a person has connections with body and
mind. The NLP involves human experience: neurology, language and programming1 .
NLP works with the mind of human beings and its process of how internalize
information and the ways that help humans to learn by knowing a little bit more their
brains.
The neurologic part is referred to our mind and RAS, the reticular activating system,
and a good input provided by teachers would provoke a learning reaction on students, it
is necessary a good input and engage students, maintain them activated. As here senses
are connected, it is suitable that teachers can know how to deliver information properly
and students can be motivated by watching, listening, touching, and sometimes smelling
at the moment of learning, so a good input will be always good for learners, we must
not forget that in some schools students do not have input, they do not do listening
activities and sometimes teachers do not show them videos, dialogues or routines. So,
we must be aware and conscious that the most important are learners and their needs.
Moreover, NLP help human beings to know more about themselves, if a person develop
a good level of NLP could be more successful and could be in a balanced spiritual, such
thing will help the person to get closer to his/her family and himself.
Robert B. Dilts (1991) has established and published many frameworks and important
research on NLP, he has applied NLP in education, health and creativity. According to
Robert B. Dilts (1991) NLP is basically based on two fundamental presuppositions,
which are: 1. The map is not the territory, here he points out that we can know our
perceptions of reality trough oour sensory system, “it is generally not reality that limits
us or empowers us, but rather our map of reality2. And the another presupposition is, 2: 1 Extracted from http://www.nlpu.com/NewDesign/NLPU_WhatIsNLP.htmlWhat is NLP. NLP University, Robert B, Dilts2 Extracted from Robert B. Dilts ,“What is NLP “http://www.nlpu.com/NewDesign/NLPU_WhatIsNLP.html
“Life” and “Mind” are systemic processes, this means that the processes between
human beings are environment are systemic, our bodies and our society form a complex
system and sub system which interact and influence on each other, so life and mind will
be always related and influencing one another by the environment.
To conclude NLP is a tool not only for teachers, it is also for every human being in the
world, but can be applied in the classroom by teachers with the purpose of engage and
maintain students activated and conscious that they are learning, as Robert B. Dilts
mentions (1991) , NLP is a way of enriching the choices that you have and perceive as
available in the world around you. Excellence comes from having many choices.
Wisdom comes from multiple perspectives.3
