The Sacraments of Healing: The Lord Jesus Christ, physician of our souls and bodies, who forgave the sins of the paralytic and restored him to bodily health, has willed that His Church continue, in the power of the Holy Spirit, his work of healing and salvation, even among her own members. This is the purpose of the two sacraments of healing: the sacrament of Penance and the sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick. (1421)

Saint Augustine sees self love as the main bar to the main love that beckons us towards God. He is aware that unless we are healed within we will be disabled, lacking the confidence and energy and the inner strength to become our true selves.

Augustine says, "Your sickness will be healed. What is faded will be fresh again, what is warped made whole and strong and sound. And all that is weak in you will not drag you to the grave. But your wholeness will abide, will remain with you before God, who remains strong and abides forever." (Confessions 4.11)

Jesus Our Healer

There is apparent connection between the first reading and the Gospel in today’s liturgy. They both speak to us about the Lord’s concern about our problems. We are sometimes overwhelmed by the problems about us. Yet, the first calls those who give in at such circumstance ‘faint hearted’ and admonishes them not to be afraid. In the same way, the Lord is asking us not to be afraid. The prophecy of Isaiah in the first was accomplished by Jesus in the Gospel reading where he performed certain miracles for certain groups of people.

Our individual situation and needs are different. In spite of this fact, the Lord is asking us to trust him. Hebrew 13:8 says that ‘Jesus is the same yesterday, today and forever’. The implication for us here is that if he did it in the past, he would certainly do again in our time. So, let us not be faint hearted but believe. In today’s Gospel, when Jesus put his hands into the man’s ears, his ears were opened. We ask to open, not only ears, but also our hearts, to understand his words that we might proclaim his goodness to others.
