General English

This course helps students to improve their English language skills in the core areas of speaking, listening, reading and writing. The emphasis is on improving the students’ fluency and building confidence when speaking in English. We cater for all language levels, from beginner (A1) to proficient (C2) learners. Courses start every week and students are given a placement test before or on their first session to ensure they join t h e m o s t appropriate group for their level.

S t u d e n t s c a n c o m b i n e t h e i r G e n e r a l E n g l i s h lessons with exam preparation (IELTS, FCE, CAE or CPE) , Business English and/or with one-to-one tuition. Progress in learning English is referenced to the Common European F r a m e w o r k o f Reference (CEFR) and m o n i t o r e d b y c o n t i n u o u s assessment and regular tests.

Course material: textbook (to be purchased when joining the course) and supplementary material.

vital information and tips regarding the exam. The same is true concerning the theoretical knowledge and practice of exam parts and individual papers.

Those who would like to improve their grammar and vocabulary knowledge besides their examination skills could also enrol on our General English courses (on a flexible basis, from one day to five days a week), and so prepare for the exam through two joint courses.

All those students who would like to join our Examination Preparation Courses are required to do an exam-specific entry test, including an Interview, Listening, Reading, Use of English and Writing. The test and the interview take approximately two hours. All this is necessary for us to determine the exact English level and knowledge of our new students as well as their aims and targets regarding the date they wish to take the exam on. Students do not need to prepare for the test since its purpose is to paint a clear and realistic picture of their strengths and weaknesses, i.e. essential information for achieving their goals. With that information, they and their tutors can then start working for the exam, based on a personalised study plan.

Course material: textbook (to be purchased when joining the course) and supplementary material.

Pronunciation / Conversation Class

This joint course will help students identify their own pronunciation diff iculties and give them an awareness of how English sounds are formed. It will help them to improve their understanding of spoken English as well as their speaking skills

through the use of a great variety of conversation topics. For the Conversation part of the lesson, tutors will not only prepare topic-related tasks and facilitate discussions, but will also ensure that all participants (including new-comers) are given opportunities to speak.

The Pronunciation component of the course focuses on the following areas:

• Individual sounds - vowels and consonants

• Consonant clusters

• Weakening

• The International Phonetic Alphabet and using a dictionary to check pronunciation

• Stress

• Rhythm

• Intonation

• Ear training - learning to listen what to listen for

The Conversation component of the course focuses on the following areas:

• Speaking and listening

• Confidence-building

• Getting acquainted with various accents

• Learning new vocabulary through topic-related tasks

• Discussing a range of interesting topics

We are a registered examination centre (Registration No: 63787) for Trinity College London exams:

Graded Exams in Spoken English (GESE)

GESE is an internationally recognised oral exam accepted by universities, companies and other inst itutions. These exams are designed to complement general English language courses, and exam preparation focuses on the development of communicative skills and building confidence among candidates. The exam includes talking about a subject or text which you can choose and prepare for in advance. It is a one-to-one interview with a Trinity examiner testing your real communication skills (speaking and listening). It has 12 levels, from Grade 1 to 12 (pre-A1 to C2). GESE Grade 2, Grade 3 and Grade 5 exams are approved by UKVI for visa or settlement purposes when taken at a UK SELT centre. Information and resources to prepare for these exams

are available in the UK visa section (https://www.gov.uk/apply-uk-visa) on this website.

Integrated Skills in English (ISE) Qualifications

The Integrated Skills in English (ISE) test is an internationally recognised exam which tests all English language skills: reading, writing, listening and speaking. It is intended for those young people and adults who require a respected English language qualification. The exam is divided into two modules: reading & writing module and listening & speaking module. The test modules can be taken together or separately. There are five levels of the ISE exam: ISE0, ISEI, ISEII, ISEIII, ISEIV which refer to the A2, B1, B2, C1, C2 levels of the CEFR.

UK ESOL Skills for Life

The ESOL Skills for Life qualifications are for people aged 16 and over who live in the UK and need English for everyday life and for work. They are designed to help people progress into mainstream English education and employment. The exam includes all English language skills: speaking, listening, reading and writing. There are five levels: Entry 1. Entry 2, Entry 3, Level 1 and Level 2 (NQF levels). Level 1 and Level 2 are recognised by the UK UCAS (https://www.ucas.com/) (University and Colleges Admission Services) as sufficient entry requirements to UK higher education.
