    Bremen Interna onal Graduate Schoolof Social Sciences

    PhD and Predoc -Fellowships and Postdoctoral Posi-ons are available. Funded by the German ExcellenceIni a ve, the Bremen Interna onal Graduate Schoolof Social Sciences (BIGSSS) invites applica ons to itsPh.D. program. The program provides close supervision of disserta on work within a demand -tailored educa on and research framework. Fellowsare expected to choose Bremen as their place of resi-dence. BIGSSS is part of an interna onal network ofhighly acknowledged graduate programs. It supportsits doctoral and postdoctoral fellows in achieving ear-ly scien c independence and provides funds for the conduct, presenta on, and publishing of theirresearch. The language of instruc on is English.

    Successful applicants will pursue a topic in one ofBIGSSS three Thema c Fields:

    Global Governance and Regional Integra on

    Welfare State, Inequality, and Quality of Life

    Changing Lives in Changing Socio -Cultural Contexts

    If you are interested in Human Rights, you might be interested in Humanity in Ac on. Humanity in Ac on Fellowship programswill take place in the summer of 2014 in Amsterdam, Berlin, Copenhagen, Paris and Warsaw.     Intensive and demanding, the Humanity in Ac on Fellowship brings together interna onal groups of college students and re-cent graduates to explore na onal histories of discrimina on and resistance, as well as examples of issues a ec ng di erentminority groups today. Each program is highly interdisciplinary, and features daily lectures and discussions with renowned aca-demics, journalists, poli cians, and ac vists, as well as site visits to government agencies, non -pro t and community organiza-

    ons, museums, and memorials. The programs seek to highlight di erent models of ac on to remedy injus ce. The objec ve ofthe Humanity in Ac on Fellowship is to facilitate a collec ve explora on of the social and poli cal roots of discrimina on, aswell as to create a forum where poten al solu ons can be considered and discussed. The programs are also intended to ins ll aresponsibility among Humanity in Ac on Fellows to recognize and address the need to protect minori es and promote humanrightsin their own communi es and around the world. To this end, Senior Fellows , the alumni of the Humanity in Ac on Fel-lowship, are expected to par cipate in Humanity in Ac on's interna onal network once their programs endand to sustaintheir engagement in the issues addressed during the fellowship.
