Fellowship & Service
One of the most meaningful experiences students have as a part of the Greek Community is the fellowship they experience as a result of joining a chapter. Through this brother/sisterhood, members will develop lifelong friendships not only within their chapter, but within the greater Greek Community. These bonds are based in the ritual and values of each organization and are some of the strongest that can be developed as an undergraduate.
“To those whom much is given, much is expected.” –John F. Kennedy
This is the ideal which guides the service and philanthropy aspect of Greek organizations. Our organizations recognize the need to be contributing members of the NKU campus and surrounding communities. Countless hours and dollars are donated each year to a variety of worthy causes. Community service and philanthropic work prepares students to
be active role models as a part of the greater society.
4
Scholarship & ExcellenceAcademic achievement is the foundation for an individual’s future success. The NKU Greek Community is committed to the attainment of personal and chapter academic goals. Although each chapter has minimum GPA requirements, each organization provides its members with resources to you succeed. As a result, fraternity men and sorority women have higher graduation and retention rates than the average student. Rewards and recognition are provided annual to those members who excel.
For Greek organizations at NKU, it is the goal to not only complete the requirements set forth by the university and headquarters, but to excel. Each individual member is expected to put forth the necessary effort to maintain the high standards of membership. As a result of this mentality, many of our organizations have received national recognition for their work in recruitment, academics, programming, and overall performance. Similar to participating in a team, the goals achieved by entire memberships are much greater
than any individual could accomplish.
5
Leadership & Integrity
One of the greatest opportunities as an undergraduate is to develop leadership skills to later apply in practical situations. Fraternity and sorority life will teach, encourage, and assist in the development of these skills. Each chapter is self-governed creating opportunities for members to lead their peers and participate in the democratic processes of the chapter, the national organization, and the campus. Being the most visible community of students, the Greek community is called upon to lead many of the campus initiatives and is seen as a valuable part of the overall campus community.
Being in a leadership role certainly requires one to have integrity, and it is the expectation of the entire Greek Community that every member have integrity. As values-based organizations there is a lot of responsibility on individual members to live up to these lofty values. As a result of this practice, fraternity and sorority members are one of the most
respected and revered groups on campus.
6
Unity & InclusivenessThere is the instant community and unity within each chapter; however the Greek students at NKU really pride themselves on their unity as an entire community. The community-wide atmosphere is one where students genuinely care about one another regardless of chapter affiliation. Students who decide to affiliate will have an affinity for their individual chapter and for the greater Greek community. This unity extends across all 3
councils; IFC, Panhellenic, and NPHC.
All chapters, with the exception of Alpha Psi Lambda, are gender-based, however men and women from all walks of life are a part of each organization. In addition to Unity, the NKU Greek Community prides itself on being inclusive of everyone. Furthermore, the Greek Community provides its members countless opportunities to partner with other campus departments in education and programming efforts. The community aspect of our organizations is founded in the inclusivity of our chapters and councils.

“A sorority or fraternity can become a home away from home, especially since moving onto our floor. My brothers are the ones with whom I share everything, my successes and my failures.”-Tanner Elrod Callahan Hall is where 6 chapters
currently have floors: 4 sororities (Delta Gamma, Delta Zeta, Theta Phi Alpha, and Phi Sigma Sigma) and 2 fraternities (Pi Kappa Alpha and Sigma Phi Epsilon). Members in these organizations have the opportunity to live with 20 of his/her brothers or sisters on a designated floor. Each room has its own bathroom and a capacity of 2-3 individuals. Additionally,
each floor has its own common space.

Frequently Asked QuestionsWhat kind of costs are involved in being Greek? Each chapter is self-supported through dues paid by all members. Dues are used to sponsor social events, membership recruitment, educational programs, and philanthropic projects. Financial obligations vary by chapter, although expenses range anywhere from $300 to $600 depending on semester. However, all chapters offer payment plans and incentives to help members offset these costs.
What about hazing in Greek letter organizations?Hazing is defined as any action taken which produces bodily harm or danger, mental or physical discomfort, embarrassment, harassment, fright, or ridicule. Northern Kentucky University Policy, state law, and all inter/national fraternal organizations prohibit hazing. The rituals of Greek organizations have nothing to do with hazing; they are not scary, shameful or degrading.
What is the time commitment for being in a chapter? The time commitment is what you make of it. Some students put all of their time into their fraternity/sorority, while others divide their time between their chapter and experiencing other things on campus. There are some required events, but you can always choose which events you want to be a part of.
Will joining a fraternity/sorority negatively affect my grades?Scholarship is one of the shared values of all fraternities and sororities, so activities will not take away from the student’s academic career, as long as the student plans ahead. Additionally, each chapter has minimum grade standards members have to maintin in order to remain active, but also have programs to support those members who may struggling academically.
