The William J. Maxwell College of Arts and Sciences is thrilled to offer the “Jersey City and Beyond” themed semester. Professors from across the college are offering a selection of courses for fall 2011 focusing on the urban experience. Taking advantage of New Jersey City University’s location in the heart of Jersey City and in the Shadow of New York City, these courses examine urban related topics with specially designed components which afford students the opportunity to move beyond the classroom. Please consider these courses when creating your fall schedules. They represent a unique opportunity that will enhance your educational experience. Remember to ask your advisors about these courses when planning your schedule. The College is planning many events throughout the semester focusing on this theme and I encourage you to watch for future announcements and invite you take part in them.

CS 107 Computer & Information Systems: Technological Impact in the Urban Cities

Jean-Claude Ngatchou Visit one of the surrounding museums of technology i.e.; the Liberty Science Center (Jersey City), Sony Wonder Technology lab (NYC) or any other museum of technology and conduct interviews with city officials, when possible; and, research how new computer technology can be used to run a city.

Kenneth Yamaguchi Fundamental chemical concepts will be integrated into studies of the atmospheric, hydrospheric, and lithospheric segments of the environment.

ENGL 188 Stories of Immigration Edvige Giunta Work on an essay that will incorporate a summary of and reflection on an oral history project with individuals that live in an urban setting.

Max Herman Examine historical documents, take field trips to former industrial sites and produce research reports documenting the changing character of these cities.

WGST 206 Men of Color in Urban America

Antoinette Ellis-Williams Six-week assignments in a community organization. The organization’s mission should be aimed at providing direct support to men of color in urban communities. Volunteer in off campus organization and write a 5-7 page summary of the experience.
