Why Use Nitrogen?Nitrogen is a dry, inert gas used toinflate airplane tires, off-road truck

tires, military vehicle tires, and racecar tires for improved performance.Oxygen in compressed air perme-ates through the wall of the tire, thusreducing the tires inflation pressure.During its journey through the tirewall, oxygen oxidizes the rubber compounds in the tire, causingunder-inflation and deterioration of the rubber. Dry nitrogen will main-tain proper inflation pressure andwill prevent auto-ignition, will notcorrode rims, and will help the tire torun cooler. The result is increased

    safety and reduced operating cost.

    Under Inflated Correctly Inflated

Correct inflation is highly signifi-cant when considering tire lifeand performance. It is notalways possible to look at a tire

and detect under-inflation.However, under-inflation cancause many tire related prob-lems. As inflation pressurelargely determines a tires load

capacity, under-inflation results inan overloaded tire. An under-inflated tire operates at highdeflection resulting in decreased

fuel economy, sluggish handlingand may result in excessivemechanical flexing and heat buildup leading to catastrophic tirefailure.

    Correct Inflation vs. Under Inflation

Improved Tire LifeNitrogen will help to extend tire lifeby reducing premature failure of thetire. The causes of premature tirefailure which are affected bynitrogen include:

    Rubber deterioration byoxidation

    Rim corrosion

    Under-inflation

    Overheating

Pressure increase due to heatbuild up

Uneven wear due to improper inflation

Experts in the tire industry indicatethat oxidative aging is one of theprimary causes of limited tire life.Oxidative aging is caused by thediffusion of air from the pressurized

air cavity of the tire to the outsideatmosphere. Tests have shown thatif tires are inflated with nitrogen, there is a significant reduction in tirefailure.

Oxygen diffuses through the tiremuch faster than nitrogen

Tires are one of the primary costs of operating a fleet of vehicles. Tirecosts include procurement, maintenance and the cost of blowouts.

A typical truck tire with two retreadscosts $480.00 and lastsapproximately 270,000 miles.Inflating tires with nitrogen will helpto prevent premature casing failureand allow tires to be retreadmultiple times, with confidence andreliability. Inflating tires with nitrogento eliminate oxidative aging mightextend tire life by up to 25%.Increasing tire life to 337,500 mileswould save $120 per tire. A fleet

with 50 trucks and 900 wheelpositions would save over $100,000in tire cost by inflating with nitrogen.

The primary cost of maintaining tiresis the cost of labor to check tirepressures and top off tires withcompressed air on a periodic basis.Tire pressure must be checked and

the tires topped off due to thediffusion of air through the tire.Tires filled with nitrogen will notexperience this diffusion andresulting loss of pressure. Tiresfilled with nitrogen maintainpressure for a much longer periodof time than tires filled with air. If atruck fleet conducts preventativemaintenance on 5 trucks per dayand presently spends 30 minutesper truck topping off tires, theycould realize savings of $31,250

per year based on a labor rate of $50 per hour and 250 work daysper year, by inflating tires withnitrogen.

The most significant benefit of filling tires with nitrogen onautomobiles is enhanced safety.Underinflation of tires due to the

diffusion of air through the tire wasidentified as a significant cause of recent tire failures. In fact, theTREAD Act recently passed by theUS Congress requires the NationalHighway and Transportation Safety

Agency (NHTSA) to develop an onboard warning of low tire pressurein all automobiles.

Tires are one of the highestoperating costs for fleets.

The cost of a service call to repair a blowout can be $500 or more.Consider the hidden costs of a blowout:

Penalties for delayed productdeliverySpoilage of product

Driver idle timeCost of lost production or lostrevenue from having the truckout of service

Extra travel time for a mechanicExtra repair time due to fieldconditions

Damage of associated partsRefunds of shipping costsLoss of goodwillOverhead costs

A recent article from the Wall Street Journal states:

One thing government and tire-industry officials agree on is the

importance of keeping tires properly inflated. The risks of underinflation, which stresses tires by causing their sidewalls to flexmore and the air temperature inside to rise, were highlighted duringcongressional hearings two years ago into the Firestone tire problems.Underinflation was identified as a factor in the failure of Firestone tires.

    -- Wall Street Journal, September 25, 2002.

    Enhanced Safety for Vehicles

    Reduced Operating Cost

    Reaction from Fleet Owners:

I dont have to waste time duringroutine maintenance topping off tires, just a quick check does it.Its a real timesaver .

    - Long Haul Fleet Owner Nitrogen eliminated an unevenwear problem we had with our

    vehicles. - Chief of Police

As a result of filling tires withnitrogen, we save about one half hour per PM for each truck.

How does the TireSaver system work?gas at the point of use for a wide

variety of applications includinggeneral manufacturing, foodprocessing and packaging, chemical blanketing, and chemicalanalysis. This same technology isnow available for inflating tires withnitrogen.

The benefits of inflating tires with

nitrogen as opposed tocompressed air have been wellknown to the tire andtransportation industries for manyyears. In general, tires filled withnitrogen improve tire life, reduceoperating costs and improvesafety. Until recently, there hasnot been a convenient, reliable, economic means of providingnitrogen to inflate tires. In thepast, nitrogen would be providedin large liquid tankers transferringthe nitrogen to large storagevessels or as a gas in highpressure cylinders at 2500 psig.

In recent years membranetechnology has been developedto purify air into a stream of highpurity nitrogen. This technology isbeing used to generate nitrogen

Hollow fiber membranetechnology is used togenerate nitrogen on-site.

Compact wall mount system, freesup floor spaceNo electricity, easy installationMembrane does not degrade over time providing consistent highperformance throughout life of membraneNo moving parts, reliable operationSimple anuual maintenanceHigh capacity floor standing modelis ideal for high volume dealerships

Includes two stages of high effi-ciency prefiltration and oil removalfiltrationExtends tire life by up to 25%Improves fuel efficiency by up to 4%Provides more consistent tirepressurePrevents auto-ignition of tiresEliminates rim corrosionResults in tires operating at lower temperature

    The Parker Nitrogen Generator:

Auto shut down = less wear andtear on compressor, less energryuseComplete prefiltration packageoffering maximum reliability andlongest operating lifeReceiver tank includedBroad operating temperaturerange. Nitrogen can be generatedautomatically, without electricity(and troublesome heaters), in acold garage bay

    Features and Benefits:

Produces high purity nitrogenfrom compressed air Requires simple wall mountinstallation (floor standing modelalso available)

Allows inflation of up to 32 trucktires per hour

Requires no storage of nitrogenOperates in the low pressurerange up to 150 psigInflates tires at the same rate ascompressed air
