Application instructions

Surface preparation

Thorough surface preparation is vital. For best results Fosrocrecommends mechanical preparation techniques. (Forexample, mechanical scarifying, grit-blasting, sand blasting).For flooring and tanking works, care must be taken to ensurethat the substrate does not suffer from rising dampness. Ifsuch conditions exist, consult Fosroc.

New concrete floors

Should be at least 28 days old or have a moisturecontent ofless than 5% before proceeding with epoxy application.Laitance and deposits on new concrete floors are bestremoved by light grit blasting, mechanical scabbling orgrinding. On smaller areas thorough etching usingReebaklens may be considered. After etching the floor, itshould be thoroughly washed with clean water and thenallowed to dry.

Old concrete floors

Again, mechanical cleaning methods are stronglyrecommended on old concrete floors, particularly where heavycontamination by oil and grease has occurred or existingcoatings are present. These may well have been absorbedseveral millimeters deep into the concrete. To ensure goodadhesion all contamination should be removed and thesurface thoroughly cleaned of all dust and loose debris. Athorough detergent wash is also recommended followed bythorough cleaning with clean water and mopping it off to a drystate.

Mixing

Add the entire contents of the hardener tin to the base andmix thoroughly for 3 mins. until homogeneous, using a slowspeed drill ( 400 - 500 rpm) fitted with a suitable mixing paddle.

Application

Once mixed the primer should be applied immediately in athin continuous film to the clean prepared surface. Work theprimer into the surface using a stiff brush or roller. Excessapplication and puddling should be avoided. On poroussurfaces Nitoprime 25 will be absorbed very quickly leavingcharacteristic light coloured dry patches. it is recommendedthat a second priming coat be applied to these dry areas.This not only helps to ensure good adhesion but also preventsair release from the porous substrate which may causebubbles in the final epoxy topping later.

For Nitoflor SL2000 / 4000 applications, leave the Nitoprime25 to dry overnight. For Nitoflor TF, Nitomortar and Nitocote,allow the solvent in the Nitoprime 25 to evaporate and becometacky. the relevant datasheets may please be referred to, toensure this.

High performance primer for the Cemtop range ofcementitious flooring materials

Uses

Nitoprime 33 is the recommended primer for the Cemtoprange of cementitious flooring when applied to concrete andcementitious screeds. The primer film forms and seals thesubstrate to prevent air release which could otherwise causepinholes in the floor topping. In addition it “wets” out thesubstrate, promotes adhesion and prevents desiccation ofthe Cemtop.

Specification Clause

The primer for the specified Cemtop cement based floortopping should be Nitoprime 33, a styrene-acrylate copolymeremulsion.

Application Instructions

CemtopThe installation of Cemtop is a specialist activity. The systemmust be applied by a Fosroc recommended contractor whohas been fully trained in the use of the materials, usingequipment supplied or approved by Fosroc.

Installation must not be attempted without reading the CemtopApplication Guide and the relevant product data sheet whichgive full details of the procedures for priming and applicationof the subsequent Cemtop overlay.

Nitoprime 33

The first primer application is carried out after the existingconcrete floor has been prepared and cleaned. Nitoprime 33is diluted in the ratio of 1:5 (primer to clean water by volume).It is applied and worked into the floor by broom. The primershould not be applied by roller or spray.

The second coat of primer should be diluted in the ratio of 1:3(primer to clean water by volume). It should be carried outwhen the first coat is dry. If the floor is porous, it may benecessary to prime a third time at a ratio of 1:3. The primermust be well brushed into the surface. Ponding of the primermust be avoided because this can lead to failure at the bondline.

During application the area must be well ventilated to speedthe drying of the primer. The application of Cemtop can proceedas soon as the primer has dried.

Cleaning

Nitoprime 33 should be removed from tools, equipment andmixers with clean water immediately after use. Dried materialcan only be removed mechanically.

Limitations

Nitoprime 33 is suitable for use on sound concrete andcementitious screeds that are free from surface contaminationand have been well prepared. It should not be used on oilcontaminated concrete or existing epoxy toppings. An epoxyprimer, Nitoprime 30, is suitable for these applications (consultseparate data sheet). Please consult Fosroc for advice onthe suitability of other substrates.

Instructions for use

Surface Preparation

New concrete surfaces should have reached 80% of theirintended physical properties - generally only achieved after aminimum curing period of 28 days. Existing concrete surfacesmust be prepared to provide a clean, sound substrate.

Surfaces should be clean and dry with open capillary, freefrom laitance, oil and grease, curing compounds or othersurface contaminants which may prevent full and properadhesion of the primer. All blowholes, and other surfaceundulations should be repaired using an appropriate Fosrocproduct.

Trafficguard® UR150

Application

Primer

Apply Trafficguard UR150 Primer to the prepared surface atan application rate in the range of 0.2 to 0.3 ltr/m2.

Whilst Trafficguard UR150 Primer is still wet, blind with AntiSlip Grain No. 3 at an estimated rate of between 0.6 - 1.2 kg/m2,leave to dry for 16 hours @ 35ºC. Prior to the removal of excessantislip grain ensure that the grains are firmly embedded inthe primer.

Apply Trafficguard UR150 Top Coat to the primed surface atan application rate in the range of 0.3 - 0.6 ltr/m² per coat. Forbest results the Trafficguard UR150 Top Coat should beapplied with a short haired lambswool roller.

Prior to trafficing allow the following cure periods:

Foot traffic : 24 hrs @ 25°C or 18 hrs @ 35°CVehicle traffic : 5 days @ 25°C or 72 hrs at 35°C

Traffic marking lines may be applied using suitable productfrom Fosroc after five days from time of application.

Cleaning

Tools and equipment should be cleaned immediately afteruse with Nitoflor Sol*.

Storage

Shelf life

When stored in warehouse conditions at less than 25°C,Trafficguard UR150 will have a shelf life of 12 months.


Limitations

Trafficguard UR150 should not be applied on to surfaceswhich are known to or likely to suffer from rising damp orhave a relative humidity greater than 75% as measured inaccordance with BS8203 Appendix A or byThermohygrometer.

In conditions of high relative humidity i.e. 85-90%, goodventilation conditions are essential. Substrate temperatureshould be atleast 3°C above dew point.

Do not proceed with application if precipitation is imminent,or temperatures are expected to drop below 7°C within 24hours of application.

High temperature working

It is suggested that, for temperatures above 35°C, the followingguidelines are adopted as good working practice:

(i) Store material in a cool (preferably temperature controlled)environment, avoiding exposure to direct sunlight.

(ii) Keep equipment cool, arranging shade protection ifnecessary. It is especially important to keep cool thosesurfaces of the equipment which will come in direct contactwith the material itself.

(iii) Try to eliminate application during the hottest times of theday.

(iv) Make sufficient material, plant and labour available toensure that the application is a continuous process.

Precautions

Health and safety

Trafficguard UR150 Primer and Nitoflor Sol should not comein contact with skin or eyes, nor should they be swallowed.Avoid inhalation of vapours and ensure adequate ventilation.

Some people are sensitive to resins, hardeners and solvents.Wear suitable protective clothing, gloves and eye/faceprotection. Barrier cream can provide additional skin protection.

Should accidental skin contact occur, remove immediately witha resin removing cream followed by washing with soap andwater - do not use solvent.

The use of goggles is recommended, in case of accidentaleye contamination, rinse immediately with plenty of water andseek medical advice.

If swallowed seek medical attention immediately - do notinduce vomiting.

Fire

Nitoflor Sol and Trafficguard UR150 Primer are flammable.Do not use near a naked flame.
