O2 Academy Bristol celebrates Hip Hop History

2014 marks 15 years since the release of Mos Def’s influential ‘Black On Both Sides’ album, which is now recognised as one of the finest albums in hip hop history. Joining him will be the “godfather of hip hop” himself, Afrika Bambaataa, with his Hip Hop History Tour.The O2 Academy will be transformed for an all-out celebration of hip hop, with DJs in the foyer and some more special events up their sleeve. Also confirmed for the evening are Def Squad’s Keith Murray and Cheeba & Moneyshot doing a four deck A/V Hip Hop retrospective.Nitelife Magazine were invited to speak to Afrika Bambaataa about his influential role in shaping hip hop history... Skip back to 1970 and Bambaataa was a gang leader in the South Bronx Black Spades. But then a trip to Africa changed his perspective and he discovered a new importance in understanding his own cultural history. He left the gang, taking members with him to form his Universal Zulu Nation, a group which actively embraced all different backgrounds and ethnicities and sought to unite them under a shared love of hip hop. Forty years on, Universal Zulu Nation are the world’s oldest and largest hip hop collective.“We (Zulu Nation) are dealing with different ideologies. We know that we’re on a planet full of many different people, who are all human, but who were put into categories by being so called, black, brown, yellow, red or white people, which is truly not their name. That came through white supremacy and we need to go back to what people were called before 1492. So, talking from ancient history to the present, you were Nubian or Samarian, or you know, a Canaanite...” His groundbreaking ‘Planet Rock’ (with Soulsonic Force)

addresses this idea that regardless of ethnicity or any other identifying factor, we are all just humans on a rock. The electro-funky “throw your hands in the air” attitude that’s sadly missing from hip hop music these days made the song an instant classic, along with his ‘Renegades of Funk’ and ‘Just Get Up and Dance’.Of course, the culture surrounding the music extends far beyond the music itself and Bambaataa was pivotal in carving out the new movement that would become known as hip hop culture. While the term ‘hip hop’ had started being used in raps by other hip hop artists at the time, Bambaataa was the first to apply the term to the wider culture surrounding the music. “The term hip hop itself comes from Keith Cowboy of The Furious Five and Lovebug Starski, but when it came to naming the culture - ‘cause we didn’t have a name for it - I took it from their cadence that they used in their raps. It gave a name to the movement of what we were doing in the year of 1974.”As the culture was established, there were four known elements of hip hop, which are (loosely): Emceeing, Breakdance, DJing and Graffiti. But with the latter two falling out of popularity in the 80s, a misinformed media helped to make rap music synonymous with hip hop. But this was simply not the case according to Bambaataa, “gangsta rap just talks about kill, kill, kill and being a gangster.” To combat this growing misconception, Bambaataa introduced the so called ‘5th element’ of hip hop which is Knowledge and he actively tries to educate the masses about the history and foundational elements of true hip hop culture. Bambaataa explains that November is Hip Hop History month and so his Hip Hop History Tour seeks to re-educate fans on

the true meaning of hip hop, as it was when it first arose in 1970s New York.“Back then it was more about love and just doing it from the heart and the struggles and making it happen.” “Today it’s a million dollar industry that’s using hip hop for advertisement, for control, for pushing all types of stuff out there that really aint got nothing to do with hip hop, its just dealing with advertisement. Like, Kool Cigarettes company did a whole hip hop thing where they were having events and you’d come in and smell the smell of cigarettes. And they were trying to put b-boys on the adverts, but we got up and rose against it.” Bambaataa is currently leading efforts to establish a Universal Hip Hop Museum to open in New York in 2017. “We’re trying to get the world to recognise hip hop as a cultural movement.”“We’re trying to get these record labels who’ve made so much money on hip hop to donate back. And anybody who sees the value of hip hop as a cultural movement that brought so many people from different racial backgrounds, different nationalities, religions together more than any politician on the planet could.”

EAts everythingThree Kings High are Bristol’s answer to fresh new music, and hailing from a diverse musical city like Bristol, what do you expect? The eclectic band who are famous for their indie, funk and hip hop infused sounds always deliver a high energised show and even Mr Craig Charles himself thinks this band are ‘fucking amazing!’Nitelife Magazine were invited to check out a local Three Kings High gig at The Canteen and had a chance to steal a few words with band members Luke, Sam, Elo, Tommy, Joe and Rowan before the show. After being taken to their studio and welcomed with open arms, 3KH opened up to chat about their diverse music taste, how the Spice Girls influenced them and most importantly, what to expect next year…

First of all, for anyone who might not be familiar with your music, can you describe the sound of Three Kings High? Tommy: This is always the toughest question we get asked!Luke: It’s kind of indie rock, riff heavy.Rowan: Bit of hip hop as well, quite funky…Joe: We get lumped into a million categories I think, because we started off by taking everyone’s influences and putting it together and that’s just turned how it turned out. Some tracks sound more like blues then others and then some sound more like hip hop. Rowan: For one of our EPs a reviewer said we were a reviewer’s worst nightmare because he couldn’t compare us to anyone. Joe: Which is good! No pigeon holes. Tommy: But it’s a challenge for promoters as well.Joe: We tend to get lumped so we’re always like the Blues Brothers at the Good Ole Boys gigs, you know? It’s always kind of like we’re the odd ones out, the sore thumb sort of thing.

Are there any bands in particular that have helped inspire the TKH sound? Rowan: As individuals, we each like such different varieties of music, so when we come together collectively that’s why it sounds a bit weird.Luke: We never aim to sound like anyone in particular, ever. Joe: Yeah, I mean no doubt we draw from people we used to listen to when we were younger.Sam: But more from our era of growing up, so like Spice Girls… Laughter

You dropped a new track this September called ‘Nothing Left to Lose’ and it’s a proper riff-heavy treat. What can we expect from you guys next? Any new EPs in the pipeline?Tommy: So we’re dropping another freebie tune at the end of October, beginning of November called ‘Living the High Life’. It’s a track we recorded live so we thought we’d just chuck it out there. Rowan: It’s a good party tune.Tommy: It really is. It’s perfect for the summer but obviously we’re dropping it in December…Joe: It’s the festive party season though!Tommy: At the moment we’re recording an eight track EP which will come out probably end of March and we want to try and coincide that with a big tour and just get it out there basically.

Brilliant, we look forward to it! Well 2014 has been a pretty big year for you touring with the success of your 2013 EP release Tell ‘Em Lies. What was your favourite city to perform in? Luke: Swansea! Joe: Yeah Swansea was the best last year, but Finsbury in London was special as well…

Elo: Yeah that was awesome.Joe: You get high expectations of London because people see it as the hard nut to crack, but Finsbury was the last date on our tour and it was epic.Rowan: Just as we strum out our last chords the DJ dropped Ghostbusters and we all just started partying on stage! Elo: It was amazing, everyone started picking up percussion...Rowan: People were like, ‘is this part of the set?!’ and started jumping on stage shouting Ghostbusters. Joe: I think that was the best gig I’d ever done!

You should start including that in every set! Joe: I’ve suggested doing a cover but I dunno… Laughter

So are there any stories from your headline tour this year that you’re prepared to share, good or bad? Tommy: Well, we nearly died on our way to Newcastle.Everyone: Oh yeah… LaughterTommy: We got booked in Newcastle and we were splitting the driving because it was such a long journey, and when I took over I thought ‘this doesn’t feel right’ and then we started hearing these scratching sounds…Rowan: This was like six hours in to the journey.Tommy: So I pulled over and basically the tyre was in pieces! All this metal was hanging out!Rowan: We took it straight to a garage and the guy was like ‘pffft, I’ve literally never seen one this bad, I’m surprised you’re still alive!’

Tommy: I think that’s the thing, it’s always been done in-house for us, but we are completely 100% confident to give Andy the full reins to do a few bits for us and it’s paid off already. Joe: We said that if he ever gets us anything big we will buy him a ten gallon hat. He doesn’t know this yet though.Tommy: He does now!LaughterJoe: So yeah, 2015 we just need to make sure we are moving in the right direction really. We’ve been precious, not out of choice but we’ve been holding on to a few tracks that no one’s heard apart from an EP and a few tunes live. We’ve got like 25- 30 tracks ready to go so we just want to get stuff out. I think at the beginning you can gig until you die but you never get anywhere. You’ve got to get people to hear your music and get them to the gigs so they know what to expect and can start learning your shit. That’s what I want to see happen next year, more actual dedicated fans and not just the kind of passing by facebook fans that ‘like’ you and that’s it. Joe: So hopefully by the time the EP is out in March next year we will be on our way to doing that. It will give people a better idea of us as well because to be fair, the stuff that’s out seems old to us now so it would be nice to get more new, relevant music out.

And finally, the ever ambitious question- where can we see 3KH in 5 years’ time? Joe: Well I’m gonna be presenting The Voice.Rowan: If I ever get on Never Mind The Buzzcocks I’ll be happy, I think that’s my one goal in life. Even if I’m in the line-up bit, that will be alright!Tommy: Sam will be presenting CBEEBIES with his chipper ways…Sam: Nah, basically what I want to do is fill in for Dominic Littlewoods role in Channel 5’s Cowboy Builders in the next few years, or Melinda Messenger or something. Anything really. I would like to be on the same level as Alison Hammond from the third Big Brother series with a good TV career. LaughterTommy: With your own column in OK! Magazine.Joe: True success lies in being the token guy in Eastenders or Corrie, so I want to be the token Geordie in Coronation Street alongside all the greats. Rowan: So as you can see we’ve got some pretty big aims…Luke: Just nothing to do with music!

That’s gonna happen again this year but it’s more a labour of love thing than anything else. When you’ve done something for ten years then your expectations are grounded in realism more than trying to do anything with it.

Sam, you’ve also been busy this year with the debut release of your album ‘Keep It Proper’ with Killamari Records. This funk infused hip hop album was a seriously good listen, can we expect any more solo work in the future? Sam: Er, maybe. Me and Joe might do a Hard Graft volume 2 mixtape...Joe: Yeah we should, we’ve been toying with the idea for some time.Sam: We’d like to, but we enjoy doing 3KH so much and it’s so much more immediate. You can bang out loads of hip hop tunes that you really enjoy but you never really get a chance to perform them, and when you do perform it’s like a mad sausage fest. Whereas we can write a tune and it comes together that quick that it’s instant gratification. It’s sort of a bigger platform and a bit of a novelty for us. I dunno, I’m getting older as well so all the kids in the crowds at hip hop gigs look different from when I was a kid. LaughterJoe: It feels like an evolution…Sam: Yeah man, it’s almost like a hang up the mic sort of thing. Joe: I think as well though, when you write a hip hop tune it can just be a way to exercise a skill really, whether that’s the wordplay or the flow. You’ve got to try and say in a few sentences what you would try and say in an entire track with a hip hop tune and that’s really challenging for me and I’m sure it is for Sam as well. Sam does a lot of lyrics for the band and I sing them, so we kind of share the load with that stuff. It’s hard though because on the surface you think it would be easier because there’s less in it, but in actual fact it’s harder because it can sound false if you just pass off a slow track as something deep because people’s ears are more trained to it. But, if I just put a bunch of syllables in a hip hop track, people will just be like ‘oh yeah that was sick’. That happens a lot because I love the syllable shit too, so does Sam and I think that’s why we work so well together because-Sam: That’s all we got! LaughterJoe: To be honest, that’s our retirement plan! If the band fails there will be like Hard Graft volume 60 or something stupid like that.

Ok, well 2014 has been a very busy year for you- what can we expect from 3KH in 2015? Elo: Well, we’ve got the new EP coming out so that should be good and we’ve got a few gigs planned along the way. Tommy: We’re trying to get a tour sorted but that’s going to be a full UK tour. Elo: The big one! Joe: It’s got to be said though, we’ve got a proper cockney manager as well so I feel like we’ve struck gold with this guy. He’s an absolute gem. Rowan: He’s a genuine cockney.Elo: He’s lovely!Rowan: He wears suits without ties…Tommy: Proper loafers and shit with jeans and a crisp white shirt. Rowan: He gets on with it. He doesn’t blow smoke up our ass.Joe: He’s the first outside influence we’ve had.Rowan: He’s good because he plays things down rather than hyping it up.

Now you guys have supported some pretty big names in the past, including the likes of Smooth & Turrell, The Pharcyde and looking at your schedule you have Dub Pistols and Dizraeli and The Small Gods lined up too. Who’s been your favourite act to support live?Tommy: Personally for me it was Hughie Morgan. Joe: Same here. Tommy: Hughie kind of paved the wave when I was growing up. I was really into the Fun Lovin’ Criminals.Rowan: There is a photo of them and Tommy is wearing Hughie’s sunglasses. Tommy: Yeah I stole his glasses and I thought we were best mates and he was probably thinking ‘get this guy away from me!’Joe: Craig Charles I thought was pretty cool. Lister from Red Dwarf. Tommy: Oh, please don’t say that…Joe: Yeah well too bad, he’s Lister to me. He can be as cool as he likes with his funk and soul, but he’s still Lister! Pharcyde was sick too though. Rowan: Oh yeah, that was an amazing gig. We were supporting at the Academy with Aspects, which from a Bristol hip hop kind of background I’ve always looked up to and obviously Pharcyde are massive. Luke: They are actually the nicest guys too.

Who would you like to support in the future?Sam: Led Zeppelin. LaughterTommy: If we keep saying it we can make it happen!Joe: I dunno, I think we should probably be trying to aim for a support tour, so it would have to be someone who is accessible and likeable, so I don’t know quite yet. Sam: Ideally it should be someone that fits us more because we get lumped into the more hip hop stuff and obviously in Bristol you already have the big hip hop, SKA thing going on. We’ve got hip hop influences but that’s through doing hip hop prior, but we don’t really see ourselves like that. Obviously it’s all good but if we could get ourselves more involved with indie bands then that would be sort of ideal. But you know, if that’s who we are then…Tommy: We tried to get The Courteeners -that would have been perfect. Rowan: Or Band of Skulls.Sam: Or The Youngblood. Punching above our weight a bit but ya’know!

Not only are you guys occupied working together with 3KH, but some of you are also busy with some solo projects too. Joe, on top of 3KH you are the founder of the Bristol and Newcastle based label Killamari Records and have released solo material under the name Chatterbox. How the hell do you find time to do it all?Tommy: He doesn’t. LaughterJoe: To be fair I have been spinning plates since the beginning, but recently I’ve kind of just been leaning on people I know can get on with it, so all I have to do is put them out on a platform I set up a few years ago. I mean, you can always do more so you always feel guilty that you’re not doing enough, especially when other people are involved. I think this year I made a decision that only the strong will survive, so if they’re brilliant and they do stuff then I’m happy to put it out and push that stuff. As far as my solo stuff goes, I’m kind of focusing on this for now. I always do the odd tune because it’s nice to prove to yourself that you can still do it. So like, every year for the past four years we’ve put a mixtape out from all the lads up north and all the people I know down here.

DJ and producer, Geddes is one of the true pioneers of the house and techno scene in London. Among those ahead of the game when it came to the decline of the super club and the dawn of a new era of raves in warehouses, Geddes and the now legendary event series ‘mulletover’ became an integral cog in the evolution of a thriving underground. On the production front, Geddes has been honing his skills since 2006 with releases on labels such as Moodmusic, Mobilee and Tsuba and of course own label murmur. Crafting a tougher sharper sound of late and treading the line between house and techno, EPs in 2013 came on Leftroom, Adam Beyer’s Truesoul imprint and a rather impressive follow-up EP on Mobillee Records. The Love Inn plays host to the London DJ this month.

Jody Wisternoff first put his stamp on the music world back in 1986 when he reached the finals of the DMC World DJ Championship aged just 13. And again 2 years later as one-half of Tru Funk, a hip hop/dance outfit with his younger brother Sam, who is now performing under the name SJ Esau. After those days of innocence and his first forays into music, Wisternoff became an unknowing pioneer in the rave scene as a member of Sub Love (with DJ Die) and Way Out West, his beloved tag team with Nick Warren. He is constantly evolving his sound with new tracks and showcasing fresh and experimental electronic music on his Frisky and Proton Radio shows every month. He has released solo singles on Ministry of Sound, Anjunadeep and Distinctive, with which he achieved the much coveted ‘Beatport Number 1’ with his track ‘Cold Drink, Hot Girl’. This month, Wisternoff headlines the Anjunadeep takeover at The Thekla.

1.) What have you learned today?I’ve recently moved and I’ve been trying to work out the central heating - it’s had a mind of its own - but finally I’ve cracked it.

2.) Favourite track of all time? Difficult one but today I would say Terry Callier, ‘Dancing Girl’.

3.) Worst chart song at the moment?I couldn’t comment as I don’t listen to any chart music really. Maybe that’s bad, but it just doesn’t interest me. Waze & Oddysey’s R Kelly rework is definitely the best from the lot. Good effort from Serge and Firaz.

4.) Who are your top 3 producers/ DJs right now? Omar S for sure - everything he does is magic. These guys from Germany called Snuff Crew have produced some cool tracks that feature heavily in my sets and Tophat & Art Alfie seem to be on fire at the minute with their infusion of house and disco.

5.) If you weren’t a DJ, what would you be doing instead?

Flying around the world seeing as much as I can. Spending large amounts of time finding paradise, hanging there for a while and then on to the next adventure. Not too dissimilar to what I do now!

6.) What was the last book you read? Dark Side Of The Light Chasers - good read, highly recommended.

7.) Favourite thing on TV?The off button.

8.) Are you afraid of anything?Snakes, I hate snakes.

9.) Tell us something people don’t often know about you...In my spare time I program traffic lights.

10.) What are you doing tomorrow? Hopefully get connected to the world wide web and go record shopping.
