As another production sale approaches, we look back at the past year’s blessings and count the many things we are grateful for. 2015 was another good year to be in the cattle business and we are excited to see what 2016 will bring! We are very happy with this year’s set of bulls. Our spring calves averaged 840 lbs at weaning time - doing so on just native grass and mother’s milk - NO CREEP. As we work on continuing to grow our herd, we are focusing on mother cows that exhibit performance, strong maternal traits and carcass ability - all in a low-input, practical package. We are working hard to provide our customers with low maintenance, highly functional bulls that perform and pay in pounds. Our customer’s success is a direct reflection of our program’s success and we place a big emphasis on making sure our customers are happy with their purchases. Our sale will be held at the Blaine County Fairground’s Commercial Building on April 6, 2016. The bulls will be available for inspection at the fairgrounds starting the afternoon of Monday, April 4th. To provide you with the most predictable and accurate selection tools, we made the decision to i50K all the bulls being offered in the sale. These genomic-enhanced EPDs offer increased predictability and valuable insight for the selection process. Along with the i50K test, all spring bulls were scanned for carcass merit. The bulls are on feed at Hould Feedlot in Malta, MT and available for you to view at any time. All the bulls have been performance and fertility tested. The bulls have been fed a high roughage ration to ensure soundness and longevity. All have been given Fusogard to help prevent footrot and tested negative for BVD-PI. Bruce, Linda and crew do an amazing job and we are blessed to have them taking care of our bulls. Lane and Scott Schmitt of Schmitt Angus will continue to be our special guests and offer some of their own bulls for sale. Barb Korenjak of Corey A Ranch in Oregon continues to partner on some cows with us and any bulls resulting from those cows will be offered in the sale. The Schmitt and Korenjak families are good friends and we are fortunate to have the opportunity to work with them. We are truly blessed to be surrounded by family and friends who support us. We could not do what we love to do without them. Sale time is one of our favorite times of the year and it is truly a family affair. We are not always able to get together on holidays, but every year our family comes together during sale time and everyone does their part in helping us put the sale on. We enjoy catching up with friends and family on sale day and invite you to join us for lunch and stay for our “friends and family” social after the sale. Please feel free to call us if you would like additional information on the bulls or if you have any questions about our program. We love to chat - especially about our cattle and our kids. Chances are you won’t hear about one without hearing about the other! Our relationship with you is one thing we value and do not take for granted. Our sincere thanks for your friendship and support throughout the years – we look forward to working with you for many years to come. Please stop by and view the sale offering and join us for lunch on April, 6th. See you then! Jeff , Christie, Charley & Tyson Nissen

Thank you for your interest in our offering at the 2016 Nissen Angus Bull Sale. We are extremely grateful for your past and future support. All our friends and customers have been a big part in allowing us to continue to grow from that first heifer in 2002. Our sincere thanks goes to Jeff and Christie for their friendship and allowing us to market our bulls through their annual sale. It’s hard to believe but this is the 10th year we will have a bull in the Nissen sale. Above all we need to thank our parents, Bob and Maureen, for supporting us through the day to day activities and allowing us to continue with our cowherd as I go to veterinary school at Washington State and Scott attends Montana Tech studying to be an engineer. And as most of you know, Taryn and I will be getting married in July and I can’t thank her enough for how supportive she is. We are excited about the 11 bulls we have to offer this year. They are a good representation of the kind of cattle we are trying to raise. They are thick, deep, and stylish with lots of bone and performance backed by fertile cows with longevity, moderate frame, maternal value, good feet, fleshing ability, performance, docility, and added carcass value. Fertility is of utmost importance to us and we select our cows heavily for it by using A.I. for two cycles of the breeding season. Along with the phenotypic and performance traits all of the bulls rank in the top 15% of the breed for $W, with 9 of the 11 in the top 3%. We think this index is the most important EPD for the commercial cattleman and are excited to offer bulls that excel in that area. We look forward to seeing and talking with you on sale day and if you have any questions please give us a call.

Each year we pick a certain lot in the sale as our donation lot. We donate a percentage of sales from that lot towards any cause that is near and dear to our hearts. Jeff lost both his parents to cancer and throughout the years, we have lost other loved ones to the disease. We have watched other family members and friends battle and win their fight with cancer and we want to do our part
to support the fight against cancer and finding a cure. This year’s donation lot is Lot #16.
We have chosen Thelma Mae Briney and her family as the recipients this year. Thelma’s mom, Mandy (Williams) Briney, and Christie grew up as distant neighbors and friends in the community of Big Sandy, MT.
On July 14, 2015, two-year-old Thelma Mae Briney was airlifted to Seattle Children’s Hospital. There she was diagnosed with an extremely rare and agressive form of cancer, Clear Cell Sarcoma of the Kidney. Throughout this past year, we have watched
Thelma Mae Briney’s fight with cancer and we are in awe of her and her family’s strength, courage and love. We are excited to say that Thelma is winning her fight and is kicking cancer’s butt! She underwent her last chemo treatment on February 16th and was able to head home after eight long months of being in Seattle. Thelma and her family will continue to travel to Seattle every three months for follow-ups. We are happy to donate and support this little girl and her family as they continue on in their journey of
winning the fight against cancer!

AAR Hilger was our pick from the 2012 Arntzen Angus Ranch Production Sale. He stems from one of the most powerful cow families at Arntzen Angus Ranch. His dam, AAR Lady Kelton 5551, is the dam of the Accelerated Genetics star AAR Ten X. AAR Lady Kelton 5551’s maternal granddam, NA Lady Constence 504, was raised at Nissen Angus and sold at
the NILE Female Sale in 1995. Hilger’s calves are born unassisted with lots of vigor. He is a sure fire heifer bull! His daughters have good udders and plenty of milk.

Spring Herd Vs. Fall Herd Our operation consists of two seperate herds - a fall calving herd and a spring calving herd. The herds are managed seperately. Our spring cows start calving around the end of January. After calving, our spring cows and yearling heifers are pastured on the Fort Belknap Reservation. The mother cows remain at pasture until the calves are weaned beginning of October. After weaning, the cows are turned out on grass hay meadows until winter warrants supplemental feeding. The coming two year old heifers remain out to grass until around the middle of December, when they are then brought in closer to home to prepare for calving. Our fall calving begins the middle of August and runs to the first part of October. The fall cows are calved out on native range and wintered along the Milk River. Our fall cows receive the same amount of feed throughout the winter as our spring cows and the calves receive no creep. When comparing fall born bulls to spring born bulls, several factors need to be taken into consideration to account for the differences in weaning weights and growth patterns. Our fall calving program begins around August 15th. Those bulls are raised on cured-out grass along with mother’s milk and hay through the winter (no creep). They are weaned no later than May 1st, before any green grass is available for growth. On the other hand, our spring born bulls are grown out on green grass, providing them with the opportunity for greater growth potential. From our man-agement experience, in order to level the playing field between the fall born bulls and spring born bulls, you have to take into account that the fall bulls’ 205 day weights will normally be100-125 lbs lighter than the spring bulls’ 205 day weights. The fall bulls will also show a difference in carcass data compared to the spring bulls due to the difference in feed and season of growth pattern. The fall bulls are going through their growth during the winter and early spring. In previous years, the fall bulls are only on a growth ration for a short time before being ultrasounded. We feel that this led to skewed data, giving the impression that the fall group was of poorer carcass merit when compared to the spring group. One of our main reasons for Zoetis i50K testing our entire sale offering was to eliminate misconception and scan data variance. We feel the i50K test will provide us and our customers with more accurate and reliable predictors for both our fall and spring born bulls.

At 11 years old, 533 is still one of our favorite cows. Due to her age, she won’t wow you with her numbers anymore
but we feel she exemplifies what the model Angus cow should look like. A 24J daughter that has provided our program with some solid genetics. We have flushed her
several times to Final Product and Registry.

Donation LotWe grafted Lot 16 onto an older
cow that had lost her calf. He was around the barn for awhile and Charley and him became quick
friends. This is “her bull” and we thought it fitting that he be the donation lot for this year’s sale.
In honor of Thelma Mae, her family and her fight - keep
fighting and stay THELMA STRONG!

Thank you for coming to the sale! We appreciate your support and value your business. We hope 2016 proves to be a succesful year for your operation. See ya next year!
A Special Thanks....
We are so fortunate to be surrounded by family and friends that are willing and ready to help whenever we give them a call. We appreciate all they do for us and our kids. We could not do what we love to do without them.
Alan & Rachel Weaver - Christie’s parents have helped us out a great deal in the past few years. Whether it is taking the kids for the weekend or helping work cows, they never turn us down when we ask. Life is always good at Grandma and Grandpa’s!Mike Nissen - Jeff ’s brother keeps everything going at the farm in Harlem all year round, lends a hand with the cows when need be and helps feed in the winter. He’s even taken the kids with him in the feed pickup - you’re the best Uncle Mike!Jim & Louise Nissen - Jeff ’s uncle and aunt watch the kids from time to time and Jim helps with the cattle when we need an extra hand. The kids love spending time at Auntie and Uncle’s.Bill & Duan Drugge - We’ve been blessed with the opportunity to get to know and work with Bill and Duan, their family and their operation. They are like grandparents to our children and we appreciate all they do for us.Brad Weaver - Christie’s brother is always a reliable source of extra help. From farming, to working cows to hanging sale posters, he always takes time out of his busy schedule to help us out.Bob & Cindy Berg - Jeff ’s sister and brother-in-law are always on hand to help with the sale and any other task we ask of them. Cindy’s cooking is second to none and we are fortunate to have her and Bob handle the details for the meal and refreshments at the sale. The kids are always excited to see Uncle Bobby and Auntie Cindy!Carol Murch and Samantha Weaver - Our sister-in-laws are always on hand to help out whenever we need them. From sale day food service to watching kids, we are grateful to have them aroundLane, Taryn and Scott - We put these three to work every chance we get. They are great help and good company. We are so excited for Lane and Taryn on their engagement and can’t wait for the wedding!
To everyone else that helps out throughout the year and during the sale - thank you!We appreciate it more than you’ll ever know.
