Grass Roots Northwest Latiya Northwest is from our very own Maskwacis Nation member and is received an award from the Alberta School Board Association. Latiya Northwest is in grade 11 and goes to school at St. Augustine Catholic School in Ponoka. The award she is received is the FNMI Shin-ing Star award and not only is she the first at St. Augustine School to receive this award she is also the first person ever to receive the award. Northwest is being recognized for her leadership and being a role model for others and because of this she was recommended for the award from St. Augustine School Councillor Tara Newton. She has seen first-hand that Latiya is a leader and wrote an essay to the asso-ciation to explain why she deserved this prestigious award.

In 2013, Peace Hills Insurance named the Pigeon Lake Sewing Project as the recipient of the 2013 Peace Hills Insurance Special Projects Fund. Under the guidance of Ber-nice Stony-Buffalo, the project has revital-ized the creative spirit in the community. The enthusiasm the piecework sewers have is contagious and everyday new community members are coming to Bernice to ask if they can participate in the project. This past April, Project members travelled to the Gathering of Nations in Albuquerque, New Mexico, where they were able to make

contacts for future supplies and compare their work with many other people….and Bernice says the bead work from the Pigeon Lake group was some of the best she saw on the trip. The Pigeon lake Sewing Project displays their work at various events in the area. At the next trade show or Powwow stop by their booth and see the great work they are doing.Have a wonderful spring and in the August issue of Nipisihkopahk Acimowin look for another update on the many ways Peace Hills General Insurance is involved in your community.
