The Following Topics will be on your nine weeks exam. It will be to your advantage to
write down what you are shown on this PowerPoint.
Topic 1: Scientific MethodYou will need to be able to list the 6
steps in the Scientific Method. They are:1. Identify the problem
2. Collect Information and do research
3. Form a hypothesis
4. Test the hypothesis (Perform the experiment)
5. Analyze your data
6. Form a conclusion
Topic 1: Scientific Method
You will need to be able to identify the hypothesis, independent and dependent variables and read a chart or graph based on the data given in a scenario.
Definitions of importance:
Hypothesis: a testable statement
Independent variable: the variable that is changed by the experimenter in the experiment.
Dependent variable: the variable that changes as a result of a change in the independent variable (this is generally what you are measuring)
Topic 1: Scientific Method
Example Scenario:
The lunchroom cooks at ABC Middle School wanted to know which type of pizza students would be most likely to eat. To complete this experiment, the lunchroom ladies surveyed the 250 students by placing 4 choices of pizza out and allowing the students to select one slice from the pizza of their choice. The manager then compiled the results from the test. The four pizza selections available were: cheese, 3-meat (hamburger, bacon and pepperoni), veggie delight and supreme. The results of the test are shown in the graph.
Identify the hypothesis, independent variable and dependent variable.
Then look at the graph and draw a conclusion about what type of pizza the lunchroom should serve.

Hypothesis: Which type of pizza do students want most?
Independent Variable: Types of Pizza
Dependent Variable: The number of students who chose that type of pizza
Questions from graph: 1. Which two types did students choose equally?
Supreme and Cheese
2. Which type of pizza did most students select? 3-Meat
Draw a conclusion: Which type of pizza should the lunchroom serve based on the likes of their students?
They should serve 3-meat if they are serving based on the greatest number of students wanting the pizza, but could also serve cheese and veggie in smaller quantities.

You should be able to name the base SI Unit used to measure each of the following:
Mass – grams
Length – meters
Temperature – kelvin
Amount of a substance – mol
Molar Mass – g/mol

Know the value of kilo, hecto, deka, deci, centi and milli
Be able to convert between two units
Moving to the left you divide and moving to the right you multiply.
Topic 3:Accuracy and Precision
Know the definition of AccuracyKnow the definition of Precision
Topic 4: Atomic Structure
Know the charge of a neutron.
Know the charge of a proton.
Know the charge of an electron.
Know the charge of the nucleus and why it has this charge.
Be able to draw an atom and place its particles in the correct location

Be able to define: Isotope
Atomic Mass
Mass Number
Atomic Number
Be able to look at the periodic table and fill out information about an element such as: Element Name
Atomic Number
Symbol
Atomic Mass
Topic 5: Molar Mass
You need to be able to work molar mass problems.
Be able to:Find the molar mass of a compound
Convert from grams to mols
Convert from mols to grams
Topic 6: Electron Configuration
You will have to be able to do the following concerning electron configuration:(I will select one element for you to do for each category.)
Write a full electron configuration (Elements 13-20)
Write a noble gas configuration (Elements 11-56)
Draw an orbital notation configuration (Elements 1-36)
You will also need to know the period trends for atomic radii, ionization energy and electronegativity as well as the definitions covered in section 5.3.
Layout of the TestThere will be matching and a few multiple choice, but most questions will be short answer and problems. If you can answer all the questions
and topics covered on this PowerPoint you will do just fine!
