ANNOUNCEMENT STORY Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin and Dolly

Parton star as three office workers who dream about getting even with their chauvinist boss in 20th Century-Fox's irreverent new comedy "Nine to Five," opening ____________ _

at the theatre. Drawn into friendship through mutual

dislike of their smarmy boss, the madcap trio begin to entertain their wildest fantasies of how to get revenge -- and wind up devising an outrageous scheme.

Jane Fonda plays newly divorced Judy Bernly, who takes the first job of her life at Consolidated Companies, and it is through her eyes that we see the daily routine of the office clerical.

The executive secretaries of America are represented by Dolly Parton who makes her film debut as Doralee Rhodes, the boss's secretary. A very attractive woman, Doralee is dedicated to her job; nevertheless, the good-hearted Doralee is the subject of a lot of malicious office gossip that she's been sleeping with the boss.

Also starring in "Nine to Five" are Dabney Coleman as the company's slippery

vice president, Elizabeth Wilson as his assistant who spies on her co-workers, and Sterling Hayden In a rare comedy appearance as the chairman of the board.

"Nine to Five" was directed by Colin Higgins, who wrote and directed "Foul Play" and was the screenwriter of "Silver Streak" and "Harold and Maude."

An IPC Films Production of a Colin Higgins Picture, "Nine to Five" was produced by Bruce Gilbert and written by Colin Higgins and Patricia Resnick, based on Resnick's story.

Lily Tomlin is Fonda's section supervisor, Violet Newstead, a widow with four children who seems to be forever training new employees without ever getting any farther along in her own career at the company. Her inept boss, whom she trained, is stealing her ideas while relegating her to fetching his coffee.

Plotting to get even with their chauvinist employer. office workers DOLLY PARTON, JANE FON DA and LILY TOMLIN put their plan into action - in the boss's bedroom. DABNEY COLEMAN co-stars.

JANE AND LILY AND DOLLY: THREE WORKING WOMEN WORKING

TOGETHER

Office workers LILY TOMLIN. DOLLY PA RTON and JANE FONDA entertain each other with fantasies of how they would like to get even with their chauvinist boss - and decide to put their most outrageous fantasy into action.

"Who could be luckier," says Dolly Parton, currently making her film debut in "Nine to Five." "I mean, it's my first film and all and I'm getting to do it with Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin. I guess that's why the whole thing sounded so right as soon as I heard about the movie."

And Lily Tomlin agrees. "I was thrilled at the idea of working with

Jane and Dolly. I knew that being with them every day would be a rich experience, and the idea of the comedy about office workers for the three of us sounded like great fun -and it was."

Actually, it was Jane Fonda, and Bruce Gilbert, partnered in IPC Films, who interested Lily and Dolly in the irreverent film about three women who dream about getting even with their boss.

"I've always been a fan of the great movies of the Forties which had three female stars," says Fonda. "I thought it was time to do a movie like that again.

"I've wanted to work with Lily ever since I

saw her on stage, and we've been talking about doing a movie together now for the past few years. And I love Dolly's music. I know which songs she has written and it just so happens that those are my favorites. I find they are the deepest and that they have the most humanity. And I feel that anybody who has that kind of depth, that can express themselves with that kind of sensitivity, can also act. Besides, Dolly's sort of everybody's slightly exaggerated vision of the ideal secretary."

As actresses, they also learned from each other. During the filming of "N ine to Five," the women grew to become great friends -like the characters they play.

"Working with Jane and Lily has been a great inspiration," says Parton of the experience. "Jane has been extremely helpful to me about camera angles and technical things to do. And Lily, I just love her. She's so creative. And her folks, of course, were from the South. We have a great communication."

"Our styles are different," admits Fonda, "partly because when you've made as many movies as I have, you're more secure with your craft. Dolly's developing that -- she's a fast learner -- and Lily's a perfectionist. She creates something new with each take. It's fascinating to watch her developing her character, and she's never completely satisfied even though she's quite wonderful in the movie."

But Dolly Parton really sums up the way the three women feel about each other.

"I love working with both of them," she says. "I have complete faith in the movie, but even if it weren't a hit , it would have been worth doing. It's not very often that you make such good friends that you love so much and with whom you can share special things. i just absolutely love both of them."

Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin and Dolly Parton star in "Nine to Five," an iPC Films Production of a Colin Higgins Picture. The 20th Century-Fox release was produced by Bruce Gilbert and directed by Colin Higgins from a screenplay by Higgins and Patricia Resnick, based on a story by Resnick.

Making waves in the office typing pool are JANE FONDA. LILY TOMLIN and DOLLY PARTON in an outrageous comedy of three women who dream about gelling even with their chauvinist boss.

JANE FONDA: GETTING INTO CHARACTER

Novice secretary JANE FONDA tries 10 master Ihe intricacies of a new machine in the outrageous comedy of three office workers who scheme to get even with their chauvinist boss, co-starring LILY TOMLIN and DOLLY PARTON.

"The women] play are usually composites of the women I've met," says Jane Fonda, currently starring with Lily Tomlin and Dolly Parton in "Nine to Five." "And if I haven't met them before I start working on a movie, then I seek them out while I'm putting together the character."

For the role of Judy Bernly, a newly divorced housewife who takes the first job of her life, Ms. Fonda spoke to several women in a similar position before choosing a conservative hairstyle, oversized eyeglasses and a prim but frilly wardrobe to help develop her character.

"I went about seeking women who had entered the job market late in life because they were recently widowed or divorced. I asked them what it meant to them -- entering the job market -- and] was surprised at the

similarity of their answers. These were women who had been defined by their husbands all their lives . You know, all the decisions were made for them. What they wore, what they did on their vacations, what they did on weekends. They never made any really hard decisions on their own, and they never had to worry about money, and now they were in their forties and out on their own.

"These women faced tremendous psychological difficulties, and they feared entering a situation where all the other women were professional women who had been there all their lives.

"One thing that they all told me was how they arrived overdressed on the fi rst day. How they felt out of place. So I asked our costume designer, Ann Roth , to overdress me. Give me a hat, an uptight suit . Make me look out of place. All of those details came from the women] spoke to.

"I also learned that one of the stereotypes I had heard about secretaries was not true. I'd heard that these women didn't like their work, that they would be doing something else if they could. But without exception, the women I spoke to liked their work. They had become independent and liked that, too. And they all recognized the importance of what they do. It is important work . It's skilled work. No business can run without office workers , and they know that.

"The problem isn't with the job so much as how management treats their secretaries, showing a lack of respect that reflects itself in wages, lack of promotion and the menial tasks they're asked to do.

"] wanted to show through my character a woman who comes to work with the fear and trepidation of someone new to the office, and who comes to take pride in what she's learned. She's a bit of a klutz in the beginning, but she likes the fact that she learns to master all the office equipment, and that she can then teach someone else all the things that she's learned. She's good at what she does, and she knows it."

And so is Jane Fonda, renowned for her versatility. \n "The China Syndrome," she was a local newscaster who helped expose the serious threat posed by a defective nuclear power plant. In "Commg Home," she became involved in a poignant love story about returning Vietnam veterans. In "Julia," she portrayed playwright Lillian Hellman. And for each role, Fonda has made her characters look as physically different from one another as possible .

"\ like to look different for each part,"she says. "That helps me feel different for each role, too."

Perhaps as a result, the nation'S top female box office star finds that she is not recognized in public as much as one might think .

"\ don't attract attention to myself," she explains . "\ find that I can travel by myself. I can walk through public places and people may recognize me but they don't particularly bother me . A lot of times I think that celebrities attract attention to themselves and sort of ask for trouble because of the way they dress, and because of their entourage and the limos and all that. But if you behave like a normal person, people will respect that."

Perhaps people have also come to respect the image Fonda has created both through her roles and through her public life.

" I think that people perceive me as somebody who is feisty , and someone who commits wholeheartedly. Even though the characters I play aren't all feisty -- and Judy Bernly certainly isn't -- there's still a sense that I commit myself totally to the part. I think it goes along with a general perception of me as a person."

LILY TOMLIN: FORMER "NINE TO FIVER" MAKES IT IN SHOW BUSINESS

LILY TOMLIN plays an ojj1cesupervisor fed up with her lowly status in a male-dominated corpora lion, in rhe ourrageous comedy aboul office workers, co-starring JANE FONDA and DOLLY PARTON.

Currently starring with Jane Fonda and Dolly Parton in "Nine to Five ," Lily Tomlin has made it in virtually every field of the entertainment industry. She's won awards for her performances on stage, on film and

Page 4

on television, and her comedy albums have earned her the coveted Grammy.

But it wasn't always the high life for the once-struggling performer.

"When I arrived in New York, I had fifteen dollars in my pocket, but I didn't even have the good sense to be scared. I thought \ could just stroll over to the Cafe Figaro in the Village and let them know I was available. But as it turned out, they had a list of about twenty other girls who were also looking for a waitress job, so I bought the New York Times and took the Fifth Avenue bus uptown to find work."

Tomlin used her little bit of office experience to help land her firstjobin the big city.

"Back in Detroit , I had worked part-time for this bookkeeper after school. He was this wonderful old character who used to love to tell me how years ago he had once been offered the job of instituting the Internal Revenue Service. He delighted in telling me how he had told them that the American people would 'never sit still for income tax.' He told me that story about once a week.

"So in New York, I took a job as an assistant bookkeeper in a small office with two male executives. Among other things , I

paid the expense accounts, and once I came across the boss's hotel bill and I told the bookkeeper that there must have been a mistake. I remember saying, 'It says check-in 2:30 p.m. Check-out 3:40 p.m. There must be a mistake.' 'Just pay it,' she said."

Lily went on to several more office temporary jobs, and a long the way she managed to get her Equity Card when she took a job in a show called "The World of Illusion." She finally gave up all secondary jobs when she landed an on-going stint at the famed " Upstairs at the Downstairs."

Remembering those times, Ms. Tomlin fondly recalls the day when she knew she was going to make it as a performer.

"One year I took all my W-2 forms to H&R Block and for the first time I found that I had made more money working in entertainment that I did waitressing and doing office temp work. That's when I knew I was in show business ."

DOLLY PARTON: MAKING MOVIES AND LIKING IT

"You see, I don 't see myself the same way that some people might," says Dolly Parton, currently starring with J ane Fonda and Lily Tomlin in "Nine to Five." "I don't think that I look particularly sexy. And I've been looking pretty much the same way since I was 16 years old."

Ms. Parton is making her film debut in "Nine to Five," playing Doralee Rhodes, the boss's secretary. Doralee's a very attractive woman who is dedicated to her job. Nevertheless, there 's a lot of malicious gossip on the floor that she's been sleeping with the boss, and the good-hearted Doralee can't understand why everyone treats her so coldly when she tries so hard to be friendly.

"I'd say that 80 percent of a ll bosses would make a pass at their secretary, given the chance," says Dolly. "Sure, the boss would try to come on to Doralee, that's human na ture . But as the movie goes on , they certainly don't play me as some dumb blonde. Doralee is an intelligent, caring person."

It's no surprise, then, that in many respects Doralee Rhodes resembles the real Dolly Parton. The role, written by Patricia Resnick and Colin Higgins, was tailored specifically to suit her personality.

"The fi lm first appealed to me because it fe lt so right. It's a comedy, which I thought I could carry off much better than something heavier. But also, the character was always going to be pretty much the same way 1 am. Doralee pretty much has my own personality, so I didn't feel I was going to be thrown into some difficult role my first time out.

"In the movie, I look like myself. I wear

the kinds of clothes I normally wear, like sweaters and tight skirts. I like to dress pretty and so does Doralee. I don't see her as sexy. I think she's kind of cuddly."

Dolly has also written the title song for the movie, which she sings over the film's credits .

Although the perfo rmer can now go into her next film project ("The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas" opposite Burt Reynolds, to be directed by "Nine to Five" 's Colin Higgins) as an experienced actress, the candid Ms. Parton enj oys telling stories about her arrival in the fi lm business.

"I'd never seen a movie being made before," she says with a laugh. "I was so si lly. I thought that movies were just done as the script goes. So I memorized the whole thing, my part and everyone else's. I knew the whole movie word for word before I ever came out here , which I found hilarious once I saw how movies were made -- out of seq uence and everything, You open a door one week, and you walk into the room three weeks later.

"But then I fo und that I didn't have to study so ha rd during the making of the movie, and making movies is oddly similar to recording because you go back and do the same things over and over again. And Jane has been extremely helpful about camera angles and lots of technical things , and Lily has been a great inspiration. We have a great communication, a nd I get a big kick out of her. "

But then Dolly's outlook has a lways managed to assure eventual success in each new undertaking.

"I was never afraid. Once I had committed

myself to doing movies , I knew I would find a way to make it all work out . I'm a very positive thinker; I always have been. I could not find it in myself that I would fail, and that's why I succeed. "

DOLLY PARTON makes her film debut as the good-natured secrelOry of a lecherous corporate executive in the outrageous com edy about office workers, co-starring JA NE FONDA and LfL Y TOMLIN.
