R: Summary

Kino awakes and watches the hanging box where his infant son, Coyoito, sleeps. He then watches his wife, Juana, who has also awakened and rests peacefully. Kino thinks of the Song of the Family, a traditional song of his ancestors, as the dawn comes and Juana begins to prepare breakfast.

Out of the corner of Kino’s eye, he sees a scorpion slowly crawling toward Coyoito’s body. Before Kino could save the baby, the scorpion had bitten the baby. Kino searched desperately for a doctor that could save his son.

Unfortunately, the doctor refused to help the afraid and desperate Kino and Juana. There was still hope; Kino had an idea to search for a pearl that could get the doctors attention & that could pay for the expense of the doctors visit.

Read the book, The Pearl by John Steinbeck, to discover what happens to Coyoito and his family.

I will show you a book cover that I drew for the rest of my R.
