The American Red Cross is pleased to introduce Babysitting Basics, a new online version of the Babysitter’s Training course. Just like the in-person course, it teaches youth ages 11 to 15 the knowledge and skills necessary to safely and responsibly care for children and infants.
Combining video and interactive activities, this convenient online course helps students develop leadership skills, learn how develop a babysitting business, keep themselves and the children in their care safe, engage children in age-appropriate activities, learn about basic child care and first aid, and more.
The course costs $25, and does not replace the in-person Babysitters Training course being taught in local Red Cross chapters throughout West Michigan. Students who successfully complete the online course will be certified in basic babysitting knowledge and skills, but not first aid and CPR. Those interested in learning CPR/AED/First Aid skills can enroll in additional classes by signing up at redcross.org/take-a-class.

Rep. Pagel issues statement on passage of state-federal health exchangeLawmaker: Yes vote protects Michigan's interests
State Rep. Dave Pagel, R-Oronoko Township, issued the following statement after voting in favor of House Bill 4111, which establishes a state-federal health exchange in advance of enactment of the
Affordable Care Act:"A health care exchange is not our choice, but by accepting federal funding to establish a state-federal exchange, we can have a hand in how it is administered. Had we not partnered with Washington on this massive new program being forced upon us, we would have no role in protecting Michigan taxpayers and Michigan jobs.
"House Republicans did everything we could to prevent a health exchange run by Washington alone because we want our doctors and patients in control of important decisions, not bureaucrats. This was moving forward one way or another, and with today's decision we are guaranteeing we have influence in how the program is run in Michigan. Our goal is to make sure the residents of our communities have access to quality health care, and a partnership with the federal government appears to be the best way to ensure that we keep the people of this state healthy and happy.“
The measure passed the House by a 78-31 margin.
