Filters

Filters for B&W FilmSince B&W film does not register colorsbut only different gradations on a "gray"scale, filters are used to improve contrastor to create special effects. For example, since B&W film is especially sensitiveto blue and ultraviolet, blue skies willoften appear white. Attaching a filterwhich absorbs blue and ultraviolet willheighten contrast so that clouds standout as the eye sees them. In addition, thedeeper color filters can be used to createblack skies, very high contrast and "dayfor night" effects.

Filters for Color FilmWhen color film is used under conditionsdifferent from those specified, strongcolor casts are likely to result. Forinstance, daylight film is ideally balancedfor the light at high noon. Photos takenwith this type of film in the morningor late afternoon will have a yellowor red tinge. Nikon filters correct suchimbalances with both daylight andtungsten film and restore natural colorrendition. Other filter can also be usedfor creative purposes.

Filters for Color Photography

Amber A2, Al2Because they subtract blue, amber filterscorrect the bluish coloration thatsometimes affects daylight film. Themild A2 filter warms scenes shot oncloudy days or in the shade. The deepercolored Al2 is used with tungsten filmfor outdoor shooting in fair weather.

Blue B2, B8, Bl2Blue filters subtract red and thus cooldown coloration. B2 is a mild filter usedwith daylight film to remove the reddishtinge from sunrise or sunset shots. Themedium-blue B8 corrects color whenclear flashbulbs are used with daylightfilm. B12 is a color conversion filterwhich naturalizes the red cast producedby photofloods when shooting indoorswith daylight film.

Filters for B&W Photography

Yellow Y44, Y48, Y52A yellow filter absorbs both blue andultraviolet light so that skies appeardarker in the B&W print. It is an especiallygood filter for landscapes or far-distanceshooting since it also clarifies hazearound faraway objects. Y44 is a mildfilter, Y48 is medium yellow, and Y52 isthe strongest in effect.

12

ooo

Page 13: Nikon General Photographic Accessories

1Orange 056Stronger than the yellow filters, the056 subtracts green as well as blue andultraviolet. It is used when a high degreeof contrast is desired between sky andobjects, and for darkening foliage andthe green parts of flowers. In telephotolandscape photography, the 056 restoresthe contrast lost due to long lenses.

Red R60This is the highest contrast B&W filter. The R60 subtracts all colors of thespectrum except red, rendering blueskies almost black in some cases andmaking clouds stand out dramatically.Darkening green leaves to a high degree,it provides a strong contrast with lightercolored flowers, especially red ones. TheR60 is also used with infrared film forspecial effects.

Green XO, XlGreen filters subtract red and blue andlet through green and yellow. The XOabsorbs less red than the Xl so its effectis milder, though both absorb the sameamount of blue. The effects of the XOare very similar to the colors perceivedby the human eye and it is therefore agood choice for general-purpose use.The X I balances the reddish cast offloodlights and gives skin a more naturaltone, making it effective for portraiture.

13

Page 14: Nikon General Photographic Accessories

Filters for Color and B&W Photography

Ultraviolet L37C, L39Skylight LlBCWhile invisible to the naked eye, ultra-violet light can reduce contrast anddetail. The colorless UV filters not onlyproduce sharper, non-hazy B&W prints, they correct the blue or violet tints thatmay occur with color film. The L37C ismultilayer coated to further reducereflection and the L39 is good for B&Wprints of mountain or beach scenes. Bothmay be used as lens protectors. Themultilayer coated Skylight LlBC alsocuts UV light and is often left on the lensto protect it.Neutral Density ND2S, ND4, ND4S, ND8S,ND400Since the ND filters subtract all lightequally, they have no effect on colorbalance. Instead, they reduce the amountof light entering the camera. ND filtersare used to control depth of field byallowing a larger aperture withoutchanging the shutter speed. They alsoprevent overexposure when lightingconditions are extremely bright andbeyond the aperture/shutter speed rangepossible with the film speed in use. Forshooting the sun, the strongest ND400 isrecommended.

Soft Focus Filters No.1, No.2Soft Focus filters come in three sizes-S2mm, 62mrn or 72mm-to fit the frontthread of a Nikkor lens. No.1 filter isgood for portraits and gives a "romantic"style haze to images. No.2 filter isstronger and produces a fog-like effect inlandscapes, or highlights a small subjectsurrounded by dark space.

Circular Polarizing FiltersBy reducing the light reflected fromnon-metallic surfaces, polarizing filtersallow direct shooting through glasswindows and reduce the glare fromwater surfaces and sunlit trees and grass. They are the only filters that darken thesky in color photography withoutaffecting color balances. Nikon circularpolarizing filters come in a rotatingmount to enable different angles fordifferent degrees of polarization, andeffects may be seen in the viewfinder asthe filter is rotated. They do not interferewith the autofocus or auto exposureoperation of the Nikon AF SLRs.

Slip-in Circular Polarizing FiltersDesigned for use in combination withtelephoto lenses equipped with a slip-infilter holder, these filters reduce glarefrom non-metallic surfaces such as glassand water. Simply turn the rotating ringon the holder to find the most effectiveposition. The filters do not affectautofocus or auto exposure features.

Neutral Color NC FiltersAvailable in attachment sizes 39mm,52mm, 58mm, 62mm, nlmn and77mm, these neutral-color filters serve aslens protectors. They do not affect colorbalance. In addition, multilayer coatingprevents light reflection inside the glass, thus improving color rendition.

Gelatin Filter Holders AF-l, AF-2These enable standard 3-inch gelatin filtersto be used with many ikkor lenses, theAF-l for 52mm attachment size and theAF-2 for 72mm attachment size.72-62 Filter Adapter Ring DR-lThis adapter enables a filter with anattachment size of 72mm to be used withany Nikkor lens with an attachment sizeof 62mm.Filter Cases CA-l, CA-2Very convenient for location work, theCA-l case holds up to six 52mm filtersand the CA-2 houses up to six 39mmfilters.
