AIR JORDAN XX3

In 1985, the entire world stood on its ear with the release of the AIR JORDAN - a white, red and black fashion statement that revolutionized the athletic footwear industry. Much like Michael Jordan in his rookie season, the original AIR JORDAN was the beginning of something legendary. From Rucker Park to Park Avenue, from Hollywood to Wall Street, the AIR JORDAN sneaker has consistently been the most sought after athletic luxury basketball shoe. Sneaker enthusiasts have credited the shoe as the impetus behind “sneakerhead” collectible market. Twenty-three shoes later, the Jordan Brand introduces a product truly worthy of being called the “Greatest Basketball Shoe Ever,” the AIR JORDAN XX3, is poised to tilt the world once again. For each iteration of AIR JORDANs created, inspiration is everything. The F-22 stealth fighter jet served as inspiration for the XX2. The muse behind the design of the XIII was the Black Panther and the XIV paid homage to the Ferrari 550 M. The AIR JORDAN XX3 simply embodies the belief held by Michael Jordan and Tinker Hatfield, Vice President, Innovation Design & Special Projects, that the AIR JORDAN XX3 must be the best ever. To accomplish this, new technological advances were built into the shoe to create the first Nike Considered, high-performance basketball shoe in NIKE, Inc. history in a beautiful handcrafted silhouette the world has ever seen. In the spirit of sustainability, the AIR JORDAN XX3 is the first basketball shoe for Nike to embrace the Nike Considered design ethos, where details in the development and design of the shoe seek to reduce waste and allow for the use of environmentally preferred materials wherever possible—all without com-promising athletic corporate responsibility targets that NIKE, Inc. has implemented to sustain long-term growth and innovation.

It all starts here. A legendary franchise, as both a high performance footwear line and as cultural icon, is launched. So revolutionary for its day, they are banned by the NBA for violating its “uniformity of uniform” rule. Michael wears them anyway, incurring a $5,000 fine per game. Likewise, MJ unveils his revolutionary style of play to the league and world at large, making his first All-Star game appearance, earning Rookie of the Year honours and in- spiring Boston Celtics legend Larry Bird to observe one performance as “God disguised as Michael Jordan.”

AIR JORDAN I: 1984-85 (March 1985, $65)

The ’86-87 season is a breakthrough year for MJ, and his assault on the record books begins. Along with a return trip to the All-Star game, Michael wins his first Slam Dunk Contest and claims his first in a series of scoring titles. Averaging 37.1 points per game, he becomes the first NBA player since Wilt Chamberlain to top 3,000 points in a season. And he does it all in a pair of embossed leather kicks made by the master shoemakers of Italy.

AIR JORDAN II: 1986-87 (November 1986, $100)

With big time innovation and lethal good looks, this is the first shoe designed by Tinker Hatfield and features visible Nike Air and decorative synthetic elephant skin. Another milestone design element is the introduction of the iconic Jump man logo. This is the season in which Spike Lee as “Mars Blackmon” makes his first appearance in Nike television ads, sparking a huge cult following. MJ steals the show this season by snagging his first NBA MVP award, Defensive Player of the Year honors, and another Slam Dunk trophy. In an interview with SLAM magazine, Michael cites the AJIII as one of his all-time favourites and in 2005 viewers of ESPN agreed, voting it the greatest sneaker of all time.

AIR JORDAN III: 1987-88 (February 1988, $100)

As cool as its breathable mesh inserts and featuring super-steady stabilization straps and ultra-cushioned soles, Tinker Hatfield creates a sneaker custom-made for fluidity, rhythm and grace. Michael makes it a reality with a series of gravity-defying dunks which, along with the distinctive tongues, were fast becoming a trademark. Spike once again pays fond homage when he features the AJIV in a scene from his movie “Do The Right Thing”, while more recently rapper Slick Rick announces his intention to purchase the entire 2006 retro line. With the IV, AIR JORDANs truly enter the modern cultural lexicon.

AIR JORDAN V: 1989-90 (February 1990, $125)

After seven years in the league, Michael leads the Chicago Bulls to a 4-1 victory over Magic Johnson’s LA Lakers for their first NBA championship. It would be a fitting ‘passing of the torch’ from the dominant Showtime team of the ‘80s to MJ’s and the Bulls’ dominance of the ‘90s. Along the way, he snags his fifth scoring title, his second league MVP Award, another NBA All-Star placing and is awarded the Finals MVP.

With a form-fitting neoprene sock liner, the AIR JORDAN VII gives new meaning to the word ‘comfort’. Meanwhile, the Bulls dominate the 1991-92 season and Michael continues to redefine the game of basketball and make it his own. What to do for an encore? ‘His Airness’ laces up this year’s model for a second championship ring and his sixth scoring title, not to mention a short hop over to Barcelona to collect some highly prized Olympic Gold as part of the USA’s legendry ‘Dream Team’.

AIR JORDAN VII: 1991-92 (February 1992, $125)

AIR JORDAN VIII is the first to feature antinversion cross-over leather, Velcro straps and thickened padding for added support and stability. The VIII is only issued in three different color combinations, making it one of the franchise’s most sought after. Michael enters the ’93 playoffs in high flying fashion, setting a Finals scoring record and lighting up the Suns for 41.0 ppg on his way to claiming his third consecutive title.

Nine years of refinement produces this minimalist classic, complete with an outsole featuring symbols and languages of numerous countries. Michael helps design it and loves it unreservedly, yet for the first time never wears it in competition. Its November 1993 release follows his retirement the previous month following back-to-back-to-back championships and countless individual awards and accolades. MJ turns to pursue a childhood dream and embarks on a minor league baseball career. Naturally, the AJIX is redesigned as a baseball cleat.

AIR JORDAN IX: 1993-94 (February 1993, $125)

The comeback shoe. It’s dunk déjà vu as Michael returns from the diamond for a return flight to the top. He issues a two-word press release to the world’s media: “I’m back.” Boasting full-length Nike Air cushioning, full grain leather uppers, speed lacing and an outsole listing the main man’s major hardwood feats, AJX is also issued in different colorways for different US cities.

Michael’s intuitive insight of bringing a “formal look” to the court serves as the inspiration for this remarkable rendition. Worn during his full return in the 1995-96 season, the XI quickly becomes one of the most popular AIR JORDANs of all-time. In another bold innovative step, the AJXI features patent leather for the first time in an athletic shoe, and a ‘secret weapon’ carbon-fibre spring plate and polymer-coated upper that refuses to stretch or lose its shape through MJ’s 72- win season and a fourth NBA title. MJ becomes only the second player ever to be crowned MVP for the season, the All-Star Game, and the Finals in a single season.

AIR JORDAN XI: 1995-96 (November 1995, $125)

The first AIR JORDANs to utilize Zoom Air Technology for lightweight cushioning and lightning quick responsiveness. MJ wears them as he scores 38 points against the Utah Jazz, including a three pointer in the dying seconds, despite being so ill with the flu he has to be helped off the floor after the game by teammate Scottie Pippen.

NOVEMBER Extremely lightweight and responsive, the XIII takes its design inspiration from the black panther, and, of course, from Michael’s predatory nature and catlike quickness on the court. The shoe features sleek Zoom Air, a unique Jumpman hologram that mimics the panther’s eye, and a carbon-fiber spring plate for more pounce in the paint. This season’s finale sees perhaps MJ’s most famous shot, in Game 6 of the Finals against Utah. (He actually wore an early release of the AIR JORDAN XIV in that game.) It proves to be the game winner, handing the Bulls their third consecutive Championship. Chicago becomes the first team in NBA history to repeat the three-peat.

AIR JORDAN XIII: 1997-98 (November 1997, $150)

Another leap of innovative design and engineering, the AJXIV is a high performance luxury ride, made of full-grain leather and featuring Zoom Air cushioning and medial air vents for breathability. Inspired by Michael’s love of cars, the AJ XIV takes on the stylish design of his very own Ferrari 550 M. Now elevated to iconic status thanks to MJ’s accomplishments, many collectors and sneaker experts rate the XIV as the most comfortable Jordans ever.

AIR JORDAN XVI: 1998-99 (October 1998, $150)

With a unique woven upper and aerodynamic design, the XV is inspired by two high-flyers: Michael Jordan and the ultra-fast X-15 fighter jet. The XV is inscribed with “23/6/15” down the heel in recognition of MJ’s jersey number/ championships won/model number of AIR JORDAN. Despite Michael’s absence from the game, this design proved to be as popular as ever.

AIR JORDAN XV: 1999-00 (December 1999, $150)

Combining some of the AIR JORDAN franchise’s most coveted features, the AJXVI represents ‘transition’, with a squarer toe, a return to visible Air and a unique, removable gaiter that transforms the XVI from a street shoe into a game shoe. Designed for high performance, the XVI draws stylistic inspiration from automobiles, architecture and Michael’s move from the court to the front office as President of Basketball Operations with the Washington Wizards.

FEBRUARYThe comeback shoe (again). In anticipation of another return to the game he loves, Michael plays a pivotal role in the design of the XVII. The most expensive AIR JORDANs ever produced, this shoe is inspired by the characteristics of jazz – solid fundamentals, dazzling runs and lots of room for improvisation. At Washington, Michael reminds the world that he can still dunk. He scores his 30,000th career point against his former team, the Chicago Bulls. The XVII comes in a metal case and includes an interactive CD-ROM.

AIR JORDAN XVII: 2001-02 (February 2002, $200)

An NBA legend, Michael Jordan virtually rewrote the record book. He played 13 seasons for the Chicago Bulls, leading the league in scoring a record 10 times. Following a stellar college career during which he was a 2-time College Player of the Year and 1st team All-America, Jordan was chosen with the 3rd pick of the 1984 NBA Draft. As Vice President, Innovation Design & Special Projects for NIKE, Tinker has left his mark on many of NIKE and Jordan Brand’s most popular and original sneaker designs, including the Air Jordan III to the Air Jordan XV, and the 20th anniversary Air Jordan XX. In 2008, Jordan Brand launches the latest in the Air Jordan franchise, the best ever high-performance basketball shoe, the innovative and sustainable Air Jordan XX3. Tinker Hatfield oversees special design projects at NIKE and Jordan Brand, including those that fall outside of the regular product design structure and formal design reviews. He designs a new Air Jordan shoe each year, and also creates environmentally preferred shoes and track & field spikes. Tinker has served as creative director for all LeBron James projects, designs shoes for Kobe Bryant and Lance Armstrong, and mentors young designers at Nike. Among Tinker’s numerous achievements at Nike include designing the first LeBron James shoe and a pole vault shoe for former world record holder Stacy Dragila.

Tinker also designed the original Air Pack Series (which included the first Visi-Air shoe, the Air Max), Pete Sampras tennis shoes, Andre Agassi footwear and apparel, and the original Air Huarache. Tinker spearheaded the idea of Jordan Brand as a separate brand and division within NIKE with the direct involvement of Michael Jordan. Jordan Brand, which made its debut in 1997, has since grown into a premiere athletic luxury brand of footwear, apparel and accessories. Tinker also invented the industry’s first cross-trainer, the Air Trainer. The cross-training shoe, which occurred to Tinker while watching gym-goers jump among different activities in the same shoes, spurred the creation of a separate cross-training footwear category. Other positions held by Tinker include Creative Director and Product Designer. Prior to joining NIKE, Inc.,Tinker worked as an independent architect in Eugene, Oregon. He also served as an architect for the Balzhiser group.

Nike’s Air Zoom Moire is a well-cushioned, lightweight running shoe…only smarter. It’s the first shoe designed to incorporate a pocket for the sensor. Together with the receiver, the Air Zoom Moire now talks to the iPod nano. It’s as simple as putting on the shoes and beginning your run. You then receive instant performance feedback including distance, time, pace and calories burned, directly to your ears through the iPod nano. The Air Zoom Moire provides a low-profile, responsive feel, with the lightweight comfort and protection of Zoom Air cushioning.A direct descendant of Nike’s foot-liberating Nike Free technology, it features a Zoom Air unit in the rearfoot and Duralon blown rubber in the forefoot for superior cushioning and comfort. An aggressive flex-groove pattern in the outsole allows the forefoot and rearfoot to move independently and more naturally.

The flexible forefoot and a low-profile midsole offer a well-cushioned, low-to-the-ground and responsive ride. The Air Zoom Moire also provides a fitted heel, with ample room up front, a combo that works well for faster running. The midsole sidewalls wrap up around the foot on the medial and lateral sides to help keep the foot centered on the footbed. The Nike foot fit sockliner uses a firm TPU (thermo-plastic urethane) shell in combination with a soft compressible EVA foam footbed designed to quickly compress and mold to the contours of the foot for a custom fit. In addition to the Air Zoom Moire shoe, the following Nike running footwear for Fall ’06 will be Nike+ ready: Air Zoom Plus, Air Max Moto+, Nike Shox Turbo OH+, Air Max 180+, Nike Shox Navina+ and Air Max 90+.

Meet your new workout partners. The sensor is the first step in connecting to your running experience. Together with the receiver, the in-shoe sensor uses an accelerometer and patented Nike+iPod technology to track foot motion information and translate it into distance, time, pace and calories burned. Inserted into the left shoe, it allows a dialogue between your shoes and your iPod nano. The sensor slips unobtrusively into a pocket under the sockliner. No need to turn it on and off – it does that automatically – and provides approximately 1000 hours of operation.

Plugging the receiver into the iPod nano enables the connection with the sensor in the footwear and adds the Nike+iPod option to the nano screen. Simply select Nike+ iPod on the screen, pick a workout, and you’re ready to run.The iPod nano automatically tracks the progress of the workout and provides real-time feedback on distance, time, pace and calories burned directly through the headphones. At the end of a run, a performance summary appears on the iPod nano screen and can be heard through the headphones. That data can be easily stored in a custom workout log at nikeplus.com.

SYSTEM OF DRESS

The look of basketball has evolved dramatically since its inception in 1891. Particularly over the past 25 to 30 years, as modern performance designs have converged with fashion cues from the culture of the time and the intertwining hip hop community. The University of Michigan in 1992 provided basketball with its most recent change in design direction when a group of freshmen known as the “Fab Five” rocketed to final of the NCAA Tournament with a new look of baggy shorts with black shoes and short socks. Since that debut 15 years ago, basketball’s look has been slow to evolve.Fast forward to 2007.Nike introduces the System of Dress, a performance look borne out of true performance insights as well as a shift in culture surrounding the game to a more sophisticated, tailored look, but also the desire among youth to personalize their uniform look. The University of Florida, the Ohio State University, Syracuse University, and the University of Arizona are expected to be the first schools to debut the System of Dress from Nike during their respective conference tournaments in 2007.The System of Dress from Nike is comprised of a Nike Fitted Jersey, a lightweight, breathable, form-fitting top, and long, lightweight, loose-fitted shorts. The combination creates a dramatic new silhouette for the game of basketball. To address players’ desires to customize within their uniforms while also providing protection, Nike has created a few items that are designed to coordinate with the new uniforms. The items that players can choose from include: long and short-sleeve Nike Pro compression base layer tops, padded compression shorts and leg wraps.

Respect the Past (Represent the Future)

While developing the new look for each team, Nike designers were determined to honor each school’s past champions and provide players with the opportunity to do so, as well. Designers researched not only the basketball programs but other sports, university insignias, past hall of fame players, mascots and even the school bands. The result was a look for each team that was embraced by the coaches, players and administrators of each organization.

The letter and number blocking on the Ohio State uniforms was borrowed from the 1960 Buckeye team that won the national championship. While commonly known as a perennial football powerhouse, the Nike Pro Compression base layer players can wear beneath their jerseys pays tribute to the Buckeye’s rich basketball tradition by calling out a number of players by name. The new uniforms also feature the LeBron James logo created by Nike. A big Buckeye fan since James was a child, Ohio State is the only college team to wear the “L23” logo on its uniforms.

The Gators have the newest tradition of success of the four schools. Nike designers went immediately to the source of pride of many of the players and student body: the alligator. The alligator was chosen as the school mascot in 1911. It may seem an obvious choice today given the habitat of the species throughout Florida, but varying explanations are given as to why the mascot was selected. Local legend attributes the choice of mascot to many different stories including a local vendor who chose to place an alligator on banners at the time, other stories attribute it to the name of the school’s team captain at the time. The scales of an alligator can be seen on one of the new base layers created for the University of Florida basketball team. A raised scale pattern has also been incorporated into two of the Gators’ new Nike Fitted Jerseys.

The look created by Nike designers for the University of Arizona Wildcats was classic and based upon head coach Lute Olson’s passion for tradition. For instance, Olson has demanded that the Arizona logo on the floor of the basketball arena featuring a cactus remain in place and there it has been since Olson took over the program in 1983.On the new uniforms, the “CATS” logo reads vertically, a signature look to Olson’s era. The Wildcats have a base layer they can wear beneath their Nike Fitted Jersey which contains the names of past school hall of fame players in text near the bottom.

Nike designers drew inspiration from and created a look that is reminiscent of the 1970s era Syracuse Orangemen, down to the iconic blocking on the shorts. For the first time, Syracuse players will wear the word “ORANGE” on their home jersey. Not only is this designed to call out the Syracuse nickname, but to also serve as a tribute to the Syracuse player and fans’ fierce passion for their mascot. On the base layer created to be worn beneath the Nike Fitted Jersey, are the letters “BSB” in script on the left chest right over the heart. The design is borrowed from the first Syracuse basketball logo created for the team around 1900. On that same piece rising from the bottom are the names of past school hall of fame players in text..

Power is nothing without accuracy. Nike’s revolutionary Total 90 Laser football boot is designed to deliver it all with ground-breaking innovation that pushes Total 90 footwear onto a whole new playing field. It is Nike’s first boot designed to enhance shooting accuracy. The T90 Laser is one of Nike’s most innovative and technological football boots on the pitch. For players like Wayne Rooney, Fabio Cannavaro and Fernando Torres, amongst many others who rely on mobility, toughness and power, accuracy is critical. Whether it’s a shot on goal, laying the ball off to a teammate, pinpoint passing or dribbling, the T90 Laser brings a new technical edge to the game.During the development of the T90 Laser, Nike worked closely with players such as World Champion, Cannavaro, as well as England and Manchester United phenomenon Wayne Rooney. Additionally, through extensive research from a major University in Germany, Nike discov-ered that 69% of shots on goal are taken from the full instep.Nike designer Tetsuya Tom Minami took these insights and created a boot designed to help reduce the variability for a solid shot and increase accuracy for every pass. “Players like Wayne Rooney told Nike, “I want to put the ball wherever I want”, and so we focused on a specific part of the boot, the kicking area, to help making the best out of most shots.” The T90 Laser boot has a significantly big ‘sweet spot’ through unique precision rings - that help control ball spin and trajectory.

POWER

The boot’s upper, with its innovative circular-pattern PowerZone - emblazoned with a “90” and the words “Swerve”, “Precision” and “Power” is inspired by visual cues from the ripples that emanate when a stone is dropped in water, says Minami. The T90 Laser’s radical new upper is engineered with Teijin™ synthetic leather and a mesh combination, under a unique industrial-grid pattern, that utilizes an innovative waterproof eVent™ lining for protection against the elements, while maintaining natural evaporative cooling. Effective movement of moisture helps protect the foot from extreme fluctuations in temperature through 90 minutes of football across a range of outside conditions. The integrated offset lacing system opens-up the ball contact area and is designed for better swerve, power and accuracy, and the Nike Zoom Air unit in the heel provides superior cushioning and low profile comfort. The outsole, built on the professional players endorsed Total 90 per-formance plate, gets dynamic graphic treatment with the skeletal image of the bones of a foot, as if the boot has been shocked or X-rayed, adds Minami, visualizing the precise stud placement and flex points of the outsole. The T90 Laser’s bold yellow-and-black color - like a hazard warning sign - signals that power and energy are approaching. It’s an intimidat-ing threat most defenders won’t want to see coming.
