►The objective of Sporting Equals is to…raise awareness and understanding of the needs of black and minority ethnic (BME) communities within the sport and health sector, in order to increase participation in sport and physical activity be it to play for fun, compete, volunteer, or gain employment.

Our Approach

BME Communities - Minimising Barriers ► Activity stereotyping affects disabled people, men and

women, BME groups, lesbian, gay and bisexual people, certain age groups and disadvantaged groups

► Sport and physical activity should not limit individuals from certain groups into specific stereotypical activities

► Positive images of diversity can challenge these stereotypes

► Coaches and teachers have a strong role in ensuring that these stereotypes are not promoted or adhered to

► Lack of cultural awareness (e.g. faith groups)

Page 6: Nik Trivedi Sporting Equals sports coach UK Tutor Equity CPD Event 27 th April 2012

► BME communities not a homogenous group

► Consider dress and modesty

► Be aware of cultural and faith requirements, including personal safety

► Schedule meetings to avoid clashes with prayer times

► Observe the appropriate dietary requirements when serving refreshments

Page 7: Nik Trivedi Sporting Equals sports coach UK Tutor Equity CPD Event 27 th April 2012

► Be prepared to arrange women only meetings

► Make sure events don’t fall on religious holidays or festivals

► Assess the venue for your session /or meeting and its appropriateness to the audience

► Consider any staffing or personnel implications including staff at the venue who are not actively delivering or involved in the session

Page 8: Nik Trivedi Sporting Equals sports coach UK Tutor Equity CPD Event 27 th April 2012

► Utilise insight to inform how your product should be delivered to your audience

► Position the benefits as being greater than just pure sport participation

► Target and tailor your offer to local communities

► Consider how you can use informal and non traditional settings for your sport

Page 9: Nik Trivedi Sporting Equals sports coach UK Tutor Equity CPD Event 27 th April 2012

► Collect monitoring information on ethnicity and religion

► Review who is taking part and whether you can engage with wider BME target audiences

► Gain feedback on where things are not working well

► Work with participants to sort out problems

Insight - Personal Circumstances

Ryan

Fatima

67% of BME groups live in the most deprived local authorities, evidence suggests that people like Ryan are more likely to be unemployed, live below the poverty line and have inhibited access to general service which will impact on their quality of life and attitudes towards sport.

Whilst sports providers may have been engaging individuals like Fatima through existing inclusion programmes for a number of years, cultural expectations and specifically the demands of the family with regards to education, religion, wider family responsibilities and work commitments are viewed as the priority.

Scenario One

You are seeking to increase the number of BME Women and girls in supporting sports activities for women and girls. Due to

reductions in local authority budgets the current worker will be unable to support the programme in two months time. You would

like to identify female volunteers from the different BME communities currently represented to continue the programme.

Discuss your approach explaining clearly how you would go about recruiting and engaging appropriate female volunteers to ensure the project continues?

Page 12: Nik Trivedi Sporting Equals sports coach UK Tutor Equity CPD Event 27 th April 2012

Scenario Two

► A club in existence for over eighty years within a community, has substantially changed over the last twenty years. The club is seeing a substantial reduction in the number of participants and volunteers and many of the traditional members have moved away from the immediate community. Many of the juniors within the club are from BME communities. Although parents/guardians come to watch, they appear to be reluctant to come into the club house and engage with current members.

Discuss the issues presented here and how you can increase the number of BME volunteers ?
