    The Textile and Garment industry is one of the largest and mostprominent sectors of Indian economy, in terms of output, foreignexchange earnings and employment generation. This Industrycontributes around 6%of GDP and accounts for almost one third ofIndia's total exports, thereby making It a single largest group ofcommodities in thecountry'sexportbasket. Indiangarment industryhasawideregionaldispersalwhereover90,000unitsemployingmorethan 10 lakh persons are engaged in the garment manufacturingactivities,whichaccountfor18%ofitstotalworkforce.

    IthasbeenestimatedthatIndia,hasapproximately,30,000readymadegarment manufacturing units and not only is the garment exportbusinessgrowing,enthustasminthemindsofforeignbuyersisalsoatahigh.TodaymanyleadingfashionlabelsarebeingassociatedwithIndianproducts.IndiaisincreasinglybeinglookeduponasamajorsupplierofhighqualityfashionapparelsandIndianapparelsarewellappreciatedinmajormarketsinternationally.

    TheriseofexportsinIndiaisduetoseveralfactorslikevastsourcesofrawmaterial, low labour cost, entrepreneurship and design skills ofIndiantradersandchanges inpolicies toopenup Indianeconomytooutsideworld.

    TheDepartmentofIndustries&Commerce,Govt.ofPunjab,establishedNorthernIndiaInstituteofFashionTechnology,in1995,comprehendingandvisualizing the need of trained professionals inthe arena of Fashion Textile and GarmentIndustry.In2012NIIFTgotaf�iliatedwithPunjabTechnical University, Kapurthala for providingdegrees tostudents,steeringandsupporting inadmission procedure, faculty recruitment andtraining as well as curriculum scheduling andupgrading.

    Mohali, equipped with the conspicuously fastdeveloping and already established garmentindustrysituatedatBaddi,Lalru,DeraBassiinthevicinity of Chandigarh, became a preferredlocationforNIIFTtohaveits�irmbaseandthusadding to the prestige and distinction of thefamouscity.

    Ludhiana, apart frombeing a signi�icant textilecluster, is at its fruition in the production ofhosiery, knitwear and readymade garments. Tomove into the global main stream of intenseeconomic competition and reckoning withrequirements of India's fashion industry intotalityandLudhianaindustryparticularly,NIIFT,inAugust2008,achievedanothermilestone,byopening a new centre at Ludhiana. Since then,NIIFT, Ludhiana has emerged as a premierinstitute and strives to impart knowledgecomparablewithinternationalstandards.

    Teaching Methodology

    Evaluation System

    Throughoutthesemestertheperformanceofthestudents is assessed on the basis of regularassignments, projects, presentations, andexaminations. The development of students isalsoanalysedbytheirparticipationinclassroomlectures and discussions. All the research anddevelopment projects are assessed by a jurycomprising of specialists in the area of design,management and technology. Such criticalappreciationsnotonlyjudgetheirperformance,

    but also enrich the student's perspective inrelevantareas.

    In the newmillennium, the success rate of theFashion designers/Professionals rest on theirability to integrate Fashion Information andTechnology.NIIFTlibraryprovidesthenecessaryinfrastructure to collect and disseminate theinformationtoitsreader.NIIFT,MohaliprovidestherelevantservicestoFashionProfessionalsandIndustry. NIIFT Library subscribes the latestjournals, Forecast for its library. Audio-VisualmaterialinCDs,Slides,VideotapesarethebasicsforanycourseandusedasaPrimaryTeachingAid.     Resource Centre

    ResourceCentreisthecentreofinformationandknowledge which supports the teaching andresearchprogramsoftheinstitute.Theresourcecentre has a varied collection of textiles,costumes, samples, swatches, embellishments,accessoriesandgarments.IthasawiderangeoftextilematerialswhichincludeIndianTraditional& contemporary, woven, knitted, printed andembroidered fabrics.     The Institute is equipped with workshops forGarmentConstruction,Draping,PatternMaking,FashionArtandIllustration,Sketching&alsohasComputerLabs.ItalsohasWeavingLab,KnittingLab,Dyeing&PrintingLabandhasaskilledworkforcetoassistDesign,Management&Technologystudents in their learning,All theseStudiosare

    equippedtohandleprofessionalworkinadditiontomeetingtrainingneeds.TheConstructionlabisequippedwithsimilarinfrastructureasavailableintheindustryandeventhelayoutconformstothe industrial production procedure. A Textile-Testing Lab equipped with the basic testingmachinesusedbytheindustryhelpsthestudentsto have practical exposure in tune with therequirementoftheindustry.

    TheInformationTechnologySectionisequippedwith State-of-Art Hardware, Software andNetwork facilities.ThisSection isplayingakeyro le in prov id ing IT enab led l earn ingenvironment with the objective of developingcomputer savvy, all round professionals. TheComputerLabhaswellequippedresourcebasehaving facilities of computers with high endcon�igurations, Plotter, Scanners, Printers, CDandDVDwritersetc.

    a.Incaseastudentsurrendershis/herseatwithin7daysoftheendofhis/hercounselling,he/shemustsubmitapplicationtothecollegeandacopytoTheRegistrar,IKGPTU,University andUniversity shall only forwardsuchcasestoNIIFTandNIIFTwillrefundhis/herfullfee after deduction of Rs. 1000/- and admissionprocessingfeeofRS.2000/-.

    b.NIIFT shall in maintain a waiting list of students/candidateskeepingwith thedirectionofMinistryofHuman Resource Development Department Govt ofIndia.Intheeventofastudent/candidatewithdrawingbefore the starting of the course, the wait listedcandidates should be given admissions against thevacantseat.Theentirefeescollectedfromthestudent,afteradeductionoftheprocessingfeeofnotmorethanRs.1000/-(RupeesOneThousandonly)andadmissionprocessing fee shallbe refundedand returnedby theNIIFT to the candidate withdrawing from theprogrammeiftheseatvacatedbyhimis�illedbynewadmission.
