NIH Loan Repayment Programs• NIH Loan Repayment Programs repay up to

$35,000 of eligible educational debt per year• Applicants must commit to performing

qualified research for at least two years• In 2011, 21 NIH Institutes and Centers funded

at least one renewal LRP contract.• You may submit only one LRP application to

NIH in any fiscal year, even though your research may be appropriate for more than one of the programs

Five Types of Extramural LRP funding• Clinical Research – patient-oriented clinical

research conducted with human subjects or involving material of human origin

• Pediatric Research – children’s diseases, disorders

• Health Disparities Research - basic, clinical and behavioral

• Contraception and Infertility Research - new or improved methods of preventing pregnancy

• Clinical Research for Individuals from Disadvantaged Backgrounds - low family income

General Eligibility Requirements• Citizenship: US Citizen or Permanent Resident• Doctoral Degree:

– Physician Doctorate: MD or DO– Academic Doctorate: PhD, Dr PH, EdD, or ScD– Physician Doctorate/Academic Doctorate: M.D./Ph.D.– Professional Clinical Doctorate: DDS, DMD, DVM, ND, OD, PharmD,

PsyD

• Qualified Educational debt– Equal to or greater than 20% of base institutional base salary

• Domestic, non-profit research funding• Qualified Research

– 50% time (at least 20 hours per week)

NIH Loan Repayment Quick Facts

• In 2011, 3,159 applications were received by the NIH Extramural Loan Repayment Programs.– The Extramural Clinical Research LRP received 1604

• Overall success rate (2003-2010) is 51 %– 42 % for new and 70 % for renewal applicants

• Largest Programs: Clinical Research and Pediatric Research (nearly 75 % of all awards)

• Average debt is $96,484, with 36% over $100,000. • Equally competitive for men and women, but more

women receive health disparities contracts.
