The P i t t s b u r g h Supercomputing Center (PSC) is conducting a three-day.workshop on "Methods of Molecular Mechanics and Dynamics o f Biopolymers," May 31, June 1-2, 1989, f o r biomedical r e s e a r c h e r s . The Nat iona l I n s t i t u t e of Neurological Disorders and S t r o k e (NINDS) h a s a new requirement f o r computat ional neuronal modeling. T h i s c o n t r a c t is t h e f irst phase o f a long-term e f f o r t t o develop a sound f u n c t i o n a l mathematical d e s c r i p t i o n o f t h e n a t u r e and behavior o f l e a r n i n g , s t o r a g e , and recal l i n v e r t e b r a t e b i o l o g i c a l systems. Such a mathematical d e s c r i p t i o n , even i n i t s e a r l y s t a g e s o f development w i l l s e r v e two p r i n c i p a l , mutual ly r e i n f o r c i n g f u n c t i o n s . It w i l l f a c i l i t a t e t h e des ign o f f u r t h e r n e u r o b i o l o g i c a l experiments and it w i l l s e r v e as t h e b a s i s f o r t h e development o f numerical models t h a t c l e a r l y demonstrate t h e p a t t e r n r e c o g n i t i o n and c l a s s i f i c a t i o n c a p a b i l i t i e s o f animals and man.

The work r e q u i r e d o f t h e Cont rac tor s h a l l c o n s i s t o f t h e fo l lowing i n t e r r e l a t e d t a s k s : 1 ) develop a d e t a i l e d , lumped-parameter model ( t h a t can be numer ica l ly emulated u s i n g a computer as a t o o l ) o f i n v e r t e b r a t e and v e r t e b r a t e n e u r a l systems e x h i b i t i n g a s s o c i a t e l e a r n i n g , s t o r a g e , and recal l t h a t b e a r s a one-to-one r e l a t i o n s h i p t o b i o l o g i c a l r e a l i t y ; 2 ) develop a mathematical model of t h e under ly ing input /output r e l a t i o n s o f t h e models; 3 ) demonstrate t h e v a l i d i t y o f t h e mathematical model by numerical emulat ion o f t h a t model u s i n g t h e mathematical model r a t h e r t h a n a one-to-one d e s c r i p t i o n of b i o l o g i c a l r e a l i t y ; and 4 ) u t i l i z i n g t h e emulat ions, demonstrate as c l e a r l y as p o s s i b l e t h e a b i l i t y of t h e s e a lgor i thms t o l e a r n , s t o r e , reca l l , and a s s o c i a t e i n p u t s , u s i n g r ea l i s t i c t e s t cases.

BACKGROUND

A major goa l o f r e s e a r c h r e l a t e d t o ag ing is t o i n c r e a s e t h e p e r i o d o f time t h a t o l d e r i n d i v i d u a l s are a b l e t o f u n c t i o n independently and i n r e l a t i v e l ygood h e a l t h . The September 1988 "Workshop on Reducing F r a i l t y and Fa l l -Re la t ed I n j u r i e s i n Older Persons" sponsored by t h e Nat iona l I n s t i t u t e on Aging ( N I A ) , Nat iona l Center f o r Nursing Research ( N C N R ) and t h e Cen te r s f o r Disease Cont ro l , p re sen ted c u r r e n t knowledge on t h e s e s u b j e c t s .Recommendations were f o r t h e need t o : i) conduct i n i t i a l s t u d i e s t o t e s t t h e e f f i c a c y o f d i f f e r e n t i n t e r v e n t i o n approaches; ii) encourage i n t e r v e n t i o n s i n popu la t ions wi th e i t h e r low, in t e rmed ia t e o r h igh f u n c t i o n a l impairment w i th t h e i n t e r v e n t i o n well matched t o t h e a p p r o p r i a t e t a r g e t popula t ion ; iii)select outcome measures ve ry c a r e f u l l y and wi th f u l l awareness o f r e q u i r e dsample s i z e ; i v ) emphasize f u n c t i o n a l c a p a c i t i e s and h e a l t h behav io r s as c r i t i c a l outcome measures; and v i ) e v a l u a t e f a c t o r s which may affect compliance wi th t h e i n t e r v e n t i o n s i n t h e s e popu la t ions .

RESEARCH GOALS AND SCOPE

A p p l i c a t i o n s are i n v i t e d which propose s t u d i e s t o t e s t i n t e r v e n t i o n s t r a t e g i e sf o r t h e p reven t ion , r e d u c t i o n o r compensation of phys i ca l f r a i l t i e s o r environmental haza rds which p l a c e o l d e r persons a t r i s k f o r i n j u r i e s . It is a n t i c i p a t e d t h a t t h e r e w i l l be 6-8 S i t e s and one Coordina t ing Center which must be independent o f t h e S i t e s .
