What is this Exhibition for?

The emphasis on light and lighting now is more than ever and this is evident from the global initiative by UNESCO to declare and celebrate 2015 as the International Year of Light. With this in mind, Nightscape 2050 is a unique exhibition dedicated to Lighting and is aimed to explore a completely new horizon of lighting design.

This exhibition aims to explore the interactions between people, light, and cities in the year 2050. “Nightscape” does not just mean the evening view; to us “nightscape = humans and cities at night.”

The emergence of new light sources such as LEDs, OLEDs, and lasers as well as the evolution of lighting-control technology in the 21st century may dramatically change our living environment. At the same time, numerous natural disasters, manmade disasters, and environmental changes have forced a discussion on how to approach energy con-sumption including how to power lighting.

There have been both optimistic and pessimistic views on the interactions between humans and the use of light. Endlessly evolving optical technologies have provided us not only the convenience but also the pleasure of freely ma-nipulating light and shadow. On the other hand, the use of artificial light has greatly impacted the circadian rhythm of humans and animals, and we now face the problem of light pollution nearly everywhere.

How can lighting design contribute to the creation of “wonderful light enjoyed by all people”? What can we expect our lighting environment in 2050 to be?

Nightscape 2050 — this is a message from Lighting Planners Associates, a leading architectural lighting design com-pany that is celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2015.

This exhibition begins at Aedes Gallery in Berlin from August 7 2015, and then travels to the cities where LPA has of-fices: Singapore, Hong Kong, and Tokyo.

Exhibition Contents

The Exhibition’s 7 Components

1. Learning from Nature

The fundamental principle of LPA’s lighting design is rooted in Nature. All of their design efforts are to get closer to skillful light and shadow created by the two natural light sources available to us, the sun and fire. In addition to this, Fireflies, Starry Skies and other natural phenomena that enchant us also provide inspiration and are essential to LPA’s unique design language of light.

2. Learning from World Nightscapes LPA has accumulated a massive collection of nightscape pictures through countless lighting surveys conducted around the world over the past 25 years. Each nightscape has its own unique living culture. Although modern technology is rapidly spreading on a global scale, nightscapes still can be viewed as inherent to the local culture represented in these images.

3. Scenes from Nightscape 2050

The visitors will be shown proposed future interactions with lighting, shown in five different settings: Urban, Street, Park, Home, and People. LPA have strived to make this highly cre-ative section very enjoyable, experiential, and educational.

4. Learning from Masters

Interviews of 5 experts in design/art and technology about their visions for lighting in the future will be presented. Their ideas are thought-provoking.

5. Learning from Children

Workshops with children between the ages of 9 and 14 were conducted in different cities to learn who their heroes and vil-lains of light are, by taking walks in the evening and astutely observing the nightscape. Their observations are pure yet sharp, even dangerous. What can adults learn from them?

6. Workshops and Symposiums in the Four Cities

Workshops and Symposiums that are contextual to the respec-tive cities will be conducted. Stimulating discussions in each of the four locations together with the exhibitions are expected and engagement with the public will be encouraged.

7. Who are we?

A section of the exhibition also shows a chronological chart of architectural lighting design and the projects of LPA as well as their latest monograph, “LPA 1990–2015.”.
