GENERAL BUSINESS

1.Postage costs for magazine

With the recent increases in postage costs, it has become too expensive to continue mailing out the

magazine. Cost is now about $80 per month. The suggested alternative for the future is:

a. Email a copy to those members with access to email

b. Provide hard copies at the monthly meeting for members attending in person

c. For members who really still do want a posted magazine, they need to provide a stamped addressed

each month.

There was a fairly brief discussion with members seeming to accept the change.

The three combined proposals were presented to members as a motion for voting.

Moved Marion Davey Seconded Warren Crozier

Motion carried. [ 23 for, 1 against, no abstentions]

Next month [February] will be the last general mailing of the magazine.

2. Banner Bookings for Spring Show

Despite an attempt to book sites back in November, only 1 was available. This could be a problem. General

discussion ensued to discover alternatives.

3. Sponsorship for Spring Show

Due to the timings of the NT and Federal elections, there may be difficulty with obtaining sponsorship from

politicians. Early approaches may be needed.

4. NOS Events

At present, no social activities/events have been planned. Ideas were called for. Suggestions include

Breakfast in the Gardens, a Darwin Tour, visits to members’ houses. Various names were suggested to be

approached. Warren is happy to host a social event in April. Neil and Smith are also willing to host an event

later in the year. President to approach Rob Marchant regarding a bus tour.

5. NOS Shirts.

4 more people are keen to buy shirts. An order can be placed for a minimum of 5

AGM.

Popular vote. Once more, a great many high quality and diverse orchids, both species and hybrids

had been brought in. This is really pleasing and allows members to see the range that

can be grown and flowered in and around Darwin and the rural area. This month, the

Popular Vote went to a large specimen of Trichoglottis brachiata owned by Sue

McKeon with the runner up an exceptionally well grown specimen of Potinara

Burana Beauty ‘Burana’ owned by Barbara Promnitz.

The club was very fortunate to be in receipt of 4 large Dendrobium orchids donated by

Ron James as prizes this month.

Lucky door Lynne Strathie

Raffle 1 Sherryl Fett

Raffle 2 Warren Crozier [but immediately donated to a very pleased Willy

Thank you in anticipation

NOS 2016 AGM

The AGM will be held immediately before the

March General Meeting. For the club to keep

operating, it is important to have all office positions

filled.

So far, several people have indicated their intention

to stand for election. This is rather unusual but a

great indication of the growth that has occurred

within the club over recent years.

In order to stand for one of the offices, a candidate

must fill in a Nomination form and obtain the

appropriate signatures. A nomination form is

enclosed with this copy of the magazine.

If you would like to see a particular social event, or to

have a particular topic discussed/demonstrated at the

monthly meetings, please tell a Committee Member.

Nightcliff Orchid Society is YOUR club

As last year, a buffet will provide the main

course, with desserts to follow.

Cost is $20 for members, $35 for non-

members with the club therefore subsiding

members for the $15 difference. Please

bring payment to the November meeting.

Deadline for final payment is Friday 27th

November.

We would like to have Christmas hampers

Can you trust labels?

Although orchid sellers do sell in good faith, the following plant’s

flowers were something of a disappointment as the plant was

purchased as Bulb. spathulatum [A very pretty flower], which it

clearly isn’t [as the photograph below shows]
