Wednesday morning 7.45am in the Home Ec room It is hard to believe we are already at the halfway point of this term. The Year 7 students have settled in well and are engaged in their learning. In the first few weeks, the Year 7 team held a well being day to help with the transition from primary school to middle school and are using feedback from that day to ensure that all the students are feeling happy and safe in their new environment. I would like to thank all the parents who attended the Meet and Greet afternoon. It was an overwhelming success with parents from across all year levels meeting their childs new teachers. If you were unable to make that evening but would still like to meet your childs teacher, we have Parent Teacher Interviews on Wednesday 4 April. The new School Council has been formed for the coming year. I would like to thank all the parents who attended the AGM and those who have joined our council. The school council meets on the third Monday of each month, during the school term. All parents are welcome to attend. Our Student Representative Council attended a planning day this week at Natasha Fylesmeeting room. They learnt about being a leader and were able to set their goals for the year. The student body has also voted on the school Captains and Vice Captains for 2018. The calibre of nominees was excellent, as were their campaign speeches at assembly. The Captains are: Precious Pitogo and Rozauro (RJ) Samson Vice Captains are: Ariella Buckle and Joel Taban Congratulations and we wish them well in their new roles. Well done to 8.3 for being the first class to win Ms

Hiley’s Ultimate Cookie Challenge!

Students were constantly displaying our NMS school values of caring, acceptance, respect, responsibility and success and winning was so very delicious. Pictured here are the 8.3 winners enjoying their victory and their cookies. In further good news, our Year 8’s excelled at generating ways to be kind to each other. Here they are putting their examples on the wall for inspiration (note how they are taking turns and smiling kindly). Students also participated well in the anti-bullying workshop (pictured right) run by the wonderfully talented and kind Mr Lathlean - thankyou from all of Year 8 for running this for us.

NMS Year 8 scientists took all of this ‘to heart’ while learning about various organs in dissection practical classes. Students were fascinated by chicken wing anatomy and kidney and heart dissections. They also learnt about circulatory systems and lung function.

It sure has been an action packed start to the year - and the excitement continues! Year 7 scientists have been undertaking many practical lessons to dive deeper into their understanding of physical forces (pictured here with a bowling ball pendulum). They have looked at measuring forces using spring balances, looked at force pairs and how to represent them in free-body diagrams and have investigated balloon rocket motion (also pictured). Our scientists have been refining their enquiry skills including measurement, data recording, calculating and graphing. Fabulous!

The enthusiastic learning continues across into English classes as students explore persuasive techniques using essay structures. Many are working on becoming ‘Masters’ in the topic, displaying their finesse in the major assessment on marketing a product of their choice.

Our mathematic magicians are currently working their Maths magic on the world of Integers. Ms Kuhl is

uncovering Ancient Greece with her Humanities students. The students will be looking at how Spartan society ran and how the famed Spartan warriors trained. They will also investigate the what, where, when, why and how of the Battle of Thermopylae. Ask a Year 7 for an in depth explanation over the next few thrilling weeks… Well done Year 7!

The numerical digits we use today such as 1, 2 and 3 are based on the Hindu-Arabic numeral system

developed over 1000 years ago.

Fibonacci numbers are named after Italian mathematician Leonardo of Pisa (better known as Fibo-

nacci) who introduced them to Western Europe after they had earlier been described by Indian

mathematicians. They are related to the golden ratio and proceed in the following order: 0, 1, 1, 2, 3,

5, 8, 13, 21, 34, 55, 89, 144, 233, .... Can you see the pattern?

Speaking in public is an art and not many people can do it well. Our Year 9 students have been spending time learning how to write speeches for an upcoming debating competition and school captain presentations. Six Year 9 students nominated for school captain and they did very well presenting their speeches at assembly this week. Congratulations on a fantastic effort by all candidates.

Just a reminder that students must bring a lock for their lockers if they haven’t already done so. It is also a good idea to leave a spare key with the Front Office in case the key is misplaced or left at home.

If students have their own laptop, or are loaning a laptop from school, they need to bring it every day. Being organised in this simple way greatly assists student learning and outcomes. As it is assessment time, students are reminded that being organised is key to completing assignments on time. Although some lessons have been allocated for assignments, students must remember that they also need to work on assignments each night to get them finished by the due date. Also, please remember to ask for help if any aspect is not clearly understood. We are striving for our Year 9 students to do their very best and we are here to help where ever possible.

Reminder: Yr 9 students need to return their interest notes for the Kakadu Camp and Malaysia. Failure to do so might mean missing out… and we wouldn’t want that now, would we….

Should We Be Fearful of Artificial

Intelligence? NMS debate students recently argued the

affirmative of this question and narrowly lost

(by only 1 point!) to O’Loughlin students.

Coming up will be debate around whether we

should continue celebrating Australia Day and

our opposition will be Darwin Middle School.

Here are a few snaps from our overnight Clontarf Academy Year 7 Induction Camp earlier this year. Students learnt about what we do at Clontarf and we discussed NMS school values and expectations. We played a number of leadership games and activities at school and then progressed to the Nightcliff Foreshore for some more fun. We are so impressed by the boys behaviour and commitment and very much look forward to supporting and working with them through the coming year.

NT SCHOOL SPORTS

Flood School NMS recently helped flood evacuees by providing space for learning at our school. NMS staff donated items to assist the preschool children until other supplies arrived. We were very pleased with the way the Woolianna School students conducted themselves while with us and we hope for a quick clean up and return to normal for their community.

News from the School Health Promotion Nurse Health Care Plans: If your child has medical condition e.g. Asthma, Allergies, Heart conditions etc., we require a Health Care Plan and corresponding paperwork to be filled out by your doctor and/or the caregivers of the child. These care plans are up-dated every 12 months to ensure the safety of your child whilst attending school. they will be absent.

We require medical certificate for absences from school of three days or more.

Updates to the Attendance and Participation policy, and the Attendance Recording and Reporting guidelines, have been made to clarify that schools must advise parents they need to provide a medical certificate, where their child is absent from school for a period exceeding three days.

Please donate your unwanted bikes!!

NMS has started a bike maintenance and repair class and is on the hunt for more resources. If you have any

unwanted bikes/spare parts/pumps etc, we’d love to have them. The aim is to teach mechanical skills and

to build a fleet for excursions and riding skills.
