NIGHT

Theater Overview Tactical Chart

MissionsHonors

The region around Saratov is dominated by the mighty Volga river, which is its most prominent aid to naviga-tion. Beyond the valley of the Volga, gently rolling hills and steppe are the primary landform, with empty fields that await spring and culti-vation. The auxiliary field at Tambov is in more densely forested country with fewer landmarks. Training is tak-ing place during the wettest season in this otherwise dry region. The furthest German advance places their forward units southwest of Voronezh, with most training flights very unlikely to encounter enemy troop concentrations or reconnaissance.

Flights out of Engels and the auxiliary field at Tambov happen nightly in cold weather, through rain and snow. The pace of instruction is relentless - three years of training are compressed into four months. Hanging over everyone’s head are quali-fication flights for piloting and navigation, as well as the specter of the final exam, an actual combat mission over German positions.

Duty Station One

Engels Airdrome (Энгельс аэродрома), February-April 1942

No decorations or medals are awarded for completing flight training.

Spewcial Rules: Accelerated training means half the missions of a combat duty station. veryone must make at least one successful Wayfind and Attack Run move while in training to qualify for combat duty.

☐ A: A Daylight mock bombing on a target range outside Bogoslavka. You’ll enjoy “aggressive” fighter-bomber escort from the all-male 217th Assault Aviation Regiment under Captain D.P. Galunov. Wayfinding rolls are optional. Potential Enemy Fire is actually friendly fire from the 217th’s Tupolev SB’s, or nervous Soviet anti-aircraft crews. Anyone participating advances, and must choose Deepening Ties (and Regard).

☐ B: Under the tutelage of major Marina Raskova herself, a Night flying exercise culminating in a live bomb attack on targets arranged on either bank of the Tsna River, simulating a bridge. Potential Enemy Fire is damage from ordinance dropped too low.

☐ C: Flying from the auxiliary airfield at Tambov, this is reconnaissance and bombing of actual German positions near Stary Oskol, southwest of Voronezh. This mission is carefully supervised by elements of the experienced and all-male 218th Night Bomber Regiment under D.D. Popov. Anyone participating advanc-es, and must choose Harsh Lessons (and a new move).

Duty Station OneAccelerated training under Major Marina Raskova has begun at the Engels Aerodrome, across the Volga river from Saratov. Classroom and ground-based instruction happens at Engels, with flight exercises and tactical problems conducted out of a rough field near Tambov that simulates combat conditions. The pace is brutal and the stakes are high - anyone falling behind is immediately washed out.

Engels Airdrome is a ma-jor center for flight training, buzzing at all hours with fighter, bomber and trans-port crews learning to handle their aircraft. Many begin earning their wings in the front seat of a Po-2. Support is ubiquitous and resources are abundant; +1 ongoing for Scrounge and Repair at the well-equipped Engels Air-drome.

Engels Airdrome (Энгельс аэродрома), February-April 1942

•Which officer trainee ar-rived already homesick? •Which one of you has caught the eye of Major Ras-kova, and for what? •How are you dealing with the minor sabotage of your planes by male ground crews? •How is the Engels Aero-drome laid out? Where are the barracks, the flight line, the hangars, the classrooms, the supply depot, the com-mand building and control tower? Where is the exercise yard and the secluded spot by the Volga where you can look over at the bustling city of Saratov?

Draw it.

•By the way, what unusual feature makes the auxiliary field at Tambov so difficult to fly out of?

The tactical area encompass-es the western gateway to the Caucasus, consisting of birch forests, marshes and fertile agricultural lands. Most of these have been abandoned, and cultivated fields make useful landmarks from the air. A major southeast-north-west rail line from Donetsk through Luhansk to Staro-bilsk is also a key strategic feature and navigational ref-erence, as is the Donets river just north of Trud Gornyaka. Navigators, look for struc-tures around the Bryanka coal mines and long fire breaks in the forests. Note that a skilled pilot can put a Po-2 down in one of these fire breaks in an emergency.

The summer weather is good for flying and the Fascist scum have not quite learned how to counter harassment bombing. The biggest dangers come from inexperienced crews and your own primitive airfield, which is made of split logs and mud. Hay bales line the runway and are set on fire to guide damaged planes home. Circumstances are … not ideal.

Duty Station Two

Trud Gornyaka (Труд Горнякa), June-August 1942

No campaign medals are awarded for defensive opera-tions in the Don river basin.

☐ A: Bombing a German First Panzer Army headquarters unit. Expect mobile anti-aircraft artillery and, possibly, advance intelligence of your arrival.

☐ B: Harassing German and Hungarian infantry massing at a crossing along the Mius river. Expect little resistance, unless you fly low enough to see the unit patches on their shoulders.

☐ C: Precision bombing of the railroad crossing at Likhaya. Denying this junction to rolling stock is an ur-gent request from the 40th Army, who intend to retake the area and quickly put the rail line back in service.

☐ D: Bombing a German marshaling yard behind the Don river crossing. Expect railcar-mounted anti-aircraft guns, searchlights, and enemy air patrols at dusk and dawn.

☐ E: Supporting the retreat from Rostov-on-Don by harassing German ordinance depots. To reach this target, every plane in the Section will have to first endure Enemy Fire. Anyone participating advances.

☐ F: Intense bombing of German troop positions and supply depots across the Kuban area around Staro-bilsk and the Taganrog-Kuybyshev line. Heavy patrols by Luftwaffe’s elite JG54 group should be expected through this area of operation. All consequences are increased by one during this mission. Anyone partici-pating advances.

Duty Station TwoTwo months have passed. The 588th has relocated to a remote field in the middle of nowhere, within striking distance of active combat zones on three sides. The thunder of artillery is constant. The badly battered Red Army is in retreat; communication and supplies are erratic. It’s time to earn first blood in the Don river basin.

Everything is chaos and the supply chain is seriously frac-tured. New recruits can’t even find the Regiment, much less parts and consumables. Oc-casionally aircraft need to be dispatched to distant ware-houses by day to bring back food. -1 ongoing for Scrounge and Repair at Trud Gornya-ka. Find it and fix it yourself. Welcome to the war.

Trud Gornyaka (Труд Горнякa), June-August 1942

•Which officer of the 588th was in no condition to fly when the regiment arrived in Trud Gornyaka? •What is being done to keep livestock off the runway, and why isn’t it working? •Who gave the German FW190 pilot seemingly ob-sessed with your regiment the nickname “Yellow-Tail”?• What does the rye field used as an airbase at Trud Gornyaka look like? Where is the rough runway lined by hay bales? Where are the leaky plywood covered dug-outs that serve as barracks? Where is the actual village, and the edge of the thick for-est? What’s the one place not drenched in mud?

The northern portion of the tactical area consists of marshes, bottomlands and vast swathes of arable land, much of it now fallow. The southern portion consists of rough country covered in beech forests, rising into low hills and even mountainous terrain. The maritime cli-mate is temperate and very wet. The Kuban river is the dominant waterway, stretch-ing inland to Krasnodar and beyond. German troops can appear anywhere in the tactical area.Navigators, look for newly cultivated fields in the north, patterns of small lakes, un-usual forest landmarks, and bald hillsides in the south as waypoints.

The regiment has moved west and south, into the warm southern maritime region dominated by the Kerch Strait. Now you're occasionally flying over water for the first time.Targets are heavily defended by anti-aircraft artillery, aided by spotlights and supplemented by occasional fighter cover. The Germans are slowly learning how to defeat the Po-2 using FW-190 fighters at dusk and dawn.

Duty Station Three

Pashkovskaya (Пашковская), March-May 1943

Upon changing duty sta-tions, all members of the 588th Regiment are awarded the Campaign Medal for the Defense of the Caucasus.

☐ [A] Harassment of German positions near the Keramzitovy Zavod rail junction. Expect searchlights and flatcar-mounted anti-aircraft guns.☐ [B] Bombing of a German supply depot near the front lines at Krasnodar. Expect enemy combat air patrols.☐ [C] Attacking your own airfield, hastily evacuated and now being overrun by the enemy. German troops are on the ground and preparing to land aircraft, which would be a disaster. The 7-9 consequence when Wayfinding on this mission is always Enemy Fire. Anyone par-ticipating advances. ☐ [D] Bombing the Krymskaya fuel dump and rail yard, near the city of Novorossiysk on the Black Sea. A low-altitude attack on this target is suicidal, so precision will be required. Burn-ing fuel will illuminate you against the night sky as you depart.☐ [E] Bombing the heavily-defended Village of Taman, behind the dreaded “Blue Line”. Ex-pect anti-aircraft artillery unless you come in over the sea, itself a dangerous proposition.☐ [F] Conducting a daylight supply drop on the Malaya Zemlya beach-head near Novorossiysk, tenuously held by Soviet naval infantry. No Wayfinding roll is needed for this mission. To reach this target, all planes will have to first endure Enemy Fire. Anyone participating ad-vances.

Duty Station ThreeSix months have passed. From a hastily converted civilian airfield here in Pashkovskaya (“Pash-KOV-skya”), you are support-ing the Black Sea Fleet in the battle for the Caucasus. The Germans are pushing hard but you are pushing harder. You’re sharing the field with the celebrated (and all-male) 218th Fighter Regiment, who have requisitioned everything of utility or value, leaving you with the scraps.

Pashkovskaya is quite close to the city of Krasnodar, which is a linch-pin in the German plans for seizing the Caucasus. Expect many of your missions to be flown very close to home. The supply situation is ad-equate, with rail lines serv-ing the city of Krasnodar and trucks available to the air-base personnel nearby. Adequate supplies: +0 to all Scrounge and Repair rolls.

Pashkovskaya (Пашковская), March-May 1943

•What completely unreason-able demand has been made on the regiment? •When is Lieutenant Gen-eral Igor Miroshnichenko, Commander of the Fourth Air Army, arriving for the in-spection? •What steps have been taken to keep the regiment efficient in such close quar-ters with her brothers in the 218th? •What does the shared mili-tary airfield at Pashkovskaya look like? Where are the over-crowded women’s barrack tents shared with the 586th and where are the spacious huts of the 218th? The tactical area covers the Taman Peninsula, Kerch Strait and eastern Crimea. This is a region of complex to-pology, with mountains, foot-hills and rocky lowlands all straddled by open water to the north and south. Navigators, memorize the features of the coastline - if you can find the Chushka spit you can follow it to solid ground and home. Sea approaches will demand skilled technical flying, and you can expect strong resis-tance from land and air and even sea at fascist-controlled ports like Feodosiya. There is no location completely safe from Hitlerite attacks within the operational zone.

Driving the Fascist beasts off the Taman Peninsula requires a new kind of flying - often above the Sea of Azov and Black Sea, over water at night. Without landmarks this requires dead reckoning with the careful coordination of airspeed, heading and time. Extremely technical flying in foul weather, combined with stiffening German resistance, makes for very stressful nights in the cockpit.

Duty Station Four

Peresyp’ (Пересыпь), October-December 1943

Upon changing duty stations, all members of the 588th Regiment are awarded the 46th Taman Guards banner. This honor does not increase the +medals stat and has no mechanical effect.

☐ A: The western terminus of the German cable tram moving equipment across the Strait. The tramline extends several kilometers from the Crimean side northeast of Kerch to the Chushka spit.

☐ B: KG51’s Luftwaffe fuel depot at the Feodosiya airfield. This is deep in German-occupied territory. This mission requires a pincer approach, one of which is over water - two Wayfinding rolls by different naviga-tors are needed to successfully locate the target. Anyone participating advances.

☐ C: German trenches, close to friendly infantry near the village of Urma straddling the Kuban river. Ex-pect ineffectual ground fire.

☐ D: Rail marshaling yard behind the Kerch salient at Alushta. Expect fierce anti-aircraft fire and search-lights.

☐ E: Anti-aircraft defenses atop Mt. Mitridat above Kerch, dangerous and technically difficult to reach. The guns themselves have been modified to fire at negative elevation, toward the beaches below. The Lead plane automatically takes Enemy Fire. This mission requires two Attack Runs for successful completion. Anyone participating advances.

☐ F: Daylight search for three missing barges full of naval infantry lost on the Black Sea. This mission requires Wayfinding. An Attack Run to drop supplies and messages is optional; Enemy Fire on a failure represents the harsh maritime environment.

Duty Station FourFour months have passed. The battle of the Caucasus is slowly changing momentum in the Soviet Union’s favor, but the butcher’s bill has been high and no end is in sight. You’re operating out of a picturesque coastal village with magnificent views of the serene Sea of Azov. The villagers resent your presence and your takeover of their community.

Peresyp’ is close enough to truck-served supply lines feeding the Red Army that the Regiment is adequately provisioned despite winter weather. The local villages scattered along the coast of the Sea of Azov can pro-vide what the Red Army Air Force does not - for a price, of course. There are no special supply rules for Peresyp’.

Peresyp’ (Пересыпь), October-December 1943

•Which officer of the 588th is quietly afraid to fly over water? •What secret luxury item are the local villagers ru-mored to possess, and who would gladly pass up a pro-motion to get her hands on just a little? •Why has the NKVD set up shop in the abandoned church? •How is the runway - the packed-dirt main street of the village of Peresyp’ - oriented? Where is the converted school used as barracks, briefing room and staff headquarters? How about the well-guarded supply tent, the barn-turned-hangar, and the lonely hill overlooking the sea? The terrain in the tactical area is monotonous - marshy birch forest interspersed with marshy pine forest. Dead reckoning will be helpful here - the forests are, in essence, another sea. Landing a plane in a village or fire break may be tempting, but sum-mer rains mean that your impromptu runway will be a morass of mud. From the Mo-gilev district, where fighting is heavy, you can follow the Dniepr up to the city of Or-sha. Orsha is a good point of reckoning, on the fork of the Dnieper and Arshytsa rivers. Follow the Dniepr east to a prominent oxbow, then due north is home.

The flying in featureless Byelorussia is quite different from the hilly Caucasus. The Luftwaffe has learned to fear our Regi-ment and is busy perfecting countermeasures, so stay alert. Front lines are fluid and you can expect enemy interference from air or ground in any quarter. Nightly summer rains and scarce landmarks may be the bigger threat, however.

Duty Station Four (Alternate)

Rudnya (Рудня), May-July 1944

No campaign medals are awarded for offensive op-erations in the Byelorussian area of operations.

☐ A: Flying to the base of Simcha Zorin’s Jewish partisans, hidden in the Naliboki Forest. A Red Army of-ficer must be delivered, and Zorin must be evacuated. No Attack Run is needed but the liaison plane must make a Wheels Down roll. All consequences are increased by one during this mission.

☐ B: Harassing enemy defensive positions along the Pronya river in the Mogilev sector.

☐ C: Bombing the headquarters of the collaborationist Byelorussian Central Rada in Minsk. If any conse-quences during an Attack Run are called for on this mission, one must always be “crew is marked”. Anyone participating advances.

☐ D: Supporting the 588th’s aviation maintenance battalion, hunting German stragglers in the forest sur-rounding the airbase. Low-level flying to spot enemies, and steep, dangerous banks to shoot at them with the rear machine gun.

☐ E: A precision “stealth” attack on command elements of SS-Sturmbrigade RONA, made up entirely of Russian traitors. The goal is to assassinate their leader, Bronislav Kaminski. They are encamped in Orsha.

☐ F: Conducting long-distance harassment of the Luftwaffe airfield at Zambrów, in eastern Poland. The weather is foul - the 7-9 consequence when Wayfinding on this mission is always harm to the crew. Anyone participating advances.

Duty Station Four (Alternate)Four months have passed since Peresyp’. The Regiment has been repositioned to support Operation Bagration and the lib-eration of Byelorussia. The Germans are not yet in full retreat but the writing is on the wall - you are going to Berlin. The Nazi monsters have been particularly cruel to Byelorussia, and they have sworn to burn down a village for every attack you make.

You are based close to Smo-lensk, which is a major sup-ply hub through which men and materiel flow west to fuel the First Byelorussian Front. Your modest contribution to its success is amply support-ed with fuel, spares and fresh - if green - crews. Updated, higher horsepower Shvetsov engines are arriving now. There are no special supply rules for Rudnya.

The operational area con-sists of the northern half of Poland. Along the Baltic it stretches from Szczecin to the massive natural harbor around Gdańsk to East Prus-sia. Below the coast lie the central lowlands, from War-saw to Poznań, from the Oder River in the west to the Vis-tula and beyond to the east. It is by far the largest zone of tactical operations the 588th has yet been asked to handle. Navigators, longer missions will force you to rely on dead reckoning. The Nerew/Bug River, where it splits from the Vistula, is a good refer-ence point. It flows east, and its southeast bend is 15 ki-lometers due south of Zam-brów.

The operational pace begins to slow as the length and complexity of individual sorties increases. Here in Poland, flights of several hundred kilometers are suddenly routine. The Regiment can’t hope to keep pace with the rapidly-advancing front lines. We’ll retrain for higher altitude flying and develop strategies for avoiding the new threat of night-hunting JU-87s.

Duty Station Five

Zambrów (Замбия), October-December 1944

Upon changing duty sta-tions, all members of the 588th Regiment are awarded the Campaign Medal for the Liberation of Warsaw. This medal does not increase the +medals stat.

☐ A: Making a surprise attack on the heavily-defended German headquarters, IX Corps, Third Panzer Army, Army Group Center, at Poznań. Any plane damaged on this mission will not be able to return to the airbase. Anyone participating advances.

☐ B: Bombing an ammunition depot outside Grudziasz, in support of the First Belorussian Front. Deplet-ing German supplies is vital and the Front is counting on you to deliver.

☐ C: Bombing the port of Gdańsk. German night-equipped JU-87 squadrons are specifically hunting Po-2s in the area and the greatest caution is urged. To reach this target, all planes will have to first endure Enemy Fire. Anyone participating advances.

☐ D: Conducting the emergency medical evacuation of Colonel Franciszek Jóźwiak, chief of staff of Armia Ludowa, Poland’s Communist resistance, from behind enemy lines. Leave the back seat free! This mission is at the limits of the Po-2’s range - two Wayfinding rolls by the same navigator are needed to successfully locate the target.

☐ E: Harassing the German garrison at Chełmno. These troops are disorganized and no resistance is ex-pected.

☐ F: Bombing the train station at Nasielsk, in support of the attack on Warsaw. Anticipate German fighter cover and possibly anti-aircraft artillery

Duty Station FiveA year has passed since Peresyp’. The airfield at Zambrów is being used by other units, leaving the 588th with a wheat field next door. The weather is cold and icy, and so is the attitude of the men flying flashier planes from improved runways. The competition to be the first to attack German soil in East Prussia is on everyone’s lips.

Supplies are catching up with the racing Red Army, and a tidal wave of materiel is rolling across Byelorus-sia, Ukraine and Poland. The Regiment can dip an eager hand into the flood and pro-vision itself well. American lend-lease goods are showing up in quantity. Opportunities for graft abound. +1 ongoing for Scrounge and Repair at Zambrów.

Western Poland and the stinking hole known as Ger-many that we are sweep-ing the Hitlerite rats back into are bisected by the Oder river, which forms a natural boundary and a good navi-gational reference point. The Baltic coast at the top of our tactical area can be followed east to the Hel Peninsula, Gdansk Bay, and eventually Chwaszczyno. The country below is utterly ruined. Cer-tainly Berlin, eternally burn-ing, is a prominent landmark from all points east. The vil-lages of Eastern Germany are essentially flattened, but look for noteworthy church spires or the shells of factories.

Flying out of the grass field at Chwaszczyno feels like a return to the bad old days of 1942 and Trud Gornyaka. The Hitlerites are running like frightened dogs now and the long-distance sorties continue. Buchholz is in the heart of hell - “To Berlin!” has been your rallying cry but now you are there, flying intensely dangerous mis-sions against suicidally brave opponents.

Duty Station Six

Chwaszczyno/Buchholz , March-May 1945

Upon completing the final mission or changing Duty Stations, the war ends. All members of the 588th Regi-ment are awarded the Cam-paign Medal for the Capture of Berlin and the Campaign Medal of Victory in the Great Patriotic War.

FIRST, FLYING OUT OF CHWASZCZYNO

☐ A: Dropping Propaganda leaflets on German troops massing to retreat across the front, from the Oder to the Baltic beaches west of Koszalin. No one can use the Wingman move on this mission. Each plane flies alone and must Wayfind alone. No Attack Run is needed.

☐ B: Harassing a resupply staging area for Army Group Vistula. Expect little resistance.

☐ C: The besieged but heavily defended “fortress city” of Königsberg. Only volunteers will fly this mission. To reach this target, all planes will have to first endure Enemy Fire. Anyone participating advances.

THEN, FLYING OUT OF BUCHHOLZ

☐ D: Repeated bombing of a Third Panzer Army fuel dump and supply depot at Pankow, minutes away. Ex-pect heavy anti-aircraft fire. All of Berlin is ablaze and your planes can easily be seen in the fire-lit skies - the 7-9 consequence when Wayfinding on this mission is always Enemy Fire. Anyone participating advances.

☐ E: Long distance harassment of the German Ninth Army, trapped in the Halbe pocket south of Berlin. No one can use the Wingman move on this mission, and damaged planes cannot return to Buchholz.

☐ F: Headquarters of Verteidigungsbereich Swinemünde, a knot of Nazi dead-enders who will fight to the last.

Read these sections out loud. Feel free to paraphrase! These para-graphs are colorful transitions and scene-painting. If they eveolve into scenes that’s fine, particularly if those scenes allow the players to engage with moves and learn about the world.

This symbol represents actual instruction. Each is a point of entry into either building a character or engaging with the rules of the game.

Dialogs between non-player characters and the player’s new recruits are important. They allow you to share background information and build up personalities within the regiment that you can return to. Each includes a list with check-boxes for your reference. Try to hit all the relevant points but don’t feel constrained.

NIGHT WITCHES: AIRFIELD ON THE BORDERLANDSThis document consists of a series of scenes that walk a group through the first Night Witches duty station - Engels Airdrome. Starting as raw recruits, the characters will gradually form up into a competent combat section ready to be shipped off to war. Along the way, the group will learn about these women and the dangerous world they live in. To use this you’ll need a copy of Night Witches, nature playbooks, a move sheet, and the first duty station handout. Let each player control a discrete part, rotating this responsibility as you pro-ceed. Everyone should follow the prompts when it comes time to build a char-acter. The final two parts - six and seven - include complete missions and full integration with the rules, so if one player has read the book it might be best to defer facilitation to them toward the end. Each part consists of a series of prompts with one of three symbols:

The document is formatted with a wide margin so you can take notes and write down names, facts and observations. Hopefully you’ll build up interesting rela-tionships and situations to explore further as you undertake this exercise.

We’ve arrived at Saratov, a city at war. The darkened streets are filled with soldiers but we are still civilians, in our best clothes. Patriotic marches in celebration of the 24th anniversary of the founding of the Red Army and im-passioned speeches by Comrade Stalin and Marshal Zhukov fill the air. “The day is not far distant when the Red Army will thrust back the brutal enemy and the red banners will fly again victoriously over the entire Soviet land.”With a Red Army Air Force transit voucher in hand, we board a ferry across the Volga with a hundred other hopeful, enthusiastic, and confused young men and women. One woman stands out in the crowd - dressed in a splendid uniform with sky blue shoulder boards with a medal pinned to her chest. We haven’t yet learned to know either her rank or what the medal signifies, but we know we want to be just like her.

Explain that you’ll be gradually building both characters and situation as your young women transition from fresh recruits to seasoned pilots and navigators ready for combat.

Explain natures and hand out the playbooks. Have each player choose a nature and then choose a name, look and background. Ask each what the other recruits see when they look at her. She’s not in uniform - what sort of clothes does she wear? Has she brought any luggage? What sort of shoes does she have on? What can we tell about her from her demeanor?

Choose a player for the officer to strike up a conversation with. Roleplay a short dialog. Make sure you deliver the following information, but keep it short.

I’m Captain Evgeniya Lobodeva of the 588th Night Bomber Regiment. The 588th is one of three regiments being formed by Major Marina Raskova,

the famous air hero. We focus on night harassment and will do the most dif-ficult, dangerous work.

We’re glad to have competent new recruits. We’ll be flying outmoded biplanes under cover of darkness in all weather conditions.

The war situation is bad - even Comrade Stalin says as much. Our winter stopped the Fascists fifty miles from Moscow, but the spring muds have blunt-ed our counter-offensive. Now things are very uncertain. Personally I aim to change that.

Step lively, obey your section leader and squadron commander, and you’ll get your chance to kick the Hitlerite bandits right in the balls.

PART ONE: SARATOV, RUSSIA

The ferry bumps up against the dock in Engels and suddenly everyone is all business - shouting, pushing, rolling trucks and equipment off. Time to get moving!

Page 35: NIGHT WITCHES - img.fireden.net · Moes Add moves when directed by advancement. Name Choose one Ran Choose Sergeant or r. Lieutenant Role Choose one. Change it when directed by a

PART TWO: LOGISTICS AREA SIXAcross the Volga, Engels Airdrome is still 4 kilometers away. While a truck is waiting for Captain Lobodeva and the other soldiers in uniform, we are told to walk. Hopefully we wore sensible shoes. The skies overhead are filled with airplanes - sleek new Pe-2 bombers shin-ing in the sunlight, stubby, aggressive-looking Yak-1 fighter planes, and plod-ding old Po-2 biplanes. These look ridiculously out of date, and their tiny en-gines sound for all the world like sewing machines. As we near the Airdome, footsore and hungry, we see for the first time how massive and busy it really is. There are hundreds of planes here, and hordes of Soviet aviators - many of them women.

Orient the players to the day side of Duty Station 1. Collectively answer the ques-tions and draw the Engels Airdrome.

Choose a player for her to have a conversation with, once she is done screaming at a hapless private. Roleplay a short dialog. Make sure you deliver the follow-ing information, but keep it short.

I’m Masha Kataeva. Who the fuck are you? Scratch that - I’ve seen your type come and go. You’ll be down in fucking flames in a fortnight and I am not going to get to know you.

What do you want? Let me make one thing perfectly clear to you skinny bitches - I am not your mother and I don’t have any boots or fucking field ra-tions, so go choke yourselves.

Let me tell you what we’ve got and you can fucking pick from that, all right? We’ve got some nice used men’s uniforms that won’t fit. We have a God-damned airplane in a packing crate and no time to assemble it. We’ve got endless fucking shovels for some reason. Ask me for anything else and I will shit on your mother.

Before I find you suka’s some nice lady boots, I think I’ll focus on acquiring a couple of Shvetsov M-11 engines and all the shit that breaks on those fuck-ers - cylinders, heads, gaskets, pumps - Jesus and his whoremonger apostles - gages, canvas and canvas dope, control wire and surfaces, wheels and struts, bomb release mechanisms, I could go fucking on, sister. I don’t have shit.

You better go see Senior Lieutenant Petrova. Ask for her in the 588th’s barracks - just keep walking that way until you see the shitty place no decent woman in her right mind would call home.

When we reach the main gate of Engels Airdrome, a Fourth Air Army mili-tary policeman reviews our papers and tells us all to report to Sergeant Kataeva in Logistics Area Six and request the following items:Service uniforms, flight boots, one week’s rations and directions to the 588th’s trainee barracksWe’re told to repeat this list. Go ahead and do that right now, let’s hear it. After some fumbling around and vague directions from harried, impatient mechanics, we find Sergeant Kataeva.

Page 36: NIGHT WITCHES - img.fireden.net · Moes Add moves when directed by advancement. Name Choose one Ran Choose Sergeant or r. Lieutenant Role Choose one. Change it when directed by a

PART THREE: 588TH TRAINEE BARRACKSWe take our new uniforms and head for the barracks, enduring some cat-calls from leather-jacket-clad male pilots on the way. When we arrive, a wom-an no older than any of us is waiting to greet us. She shows each of us to a cot and tells us to put on our new uniforms.

Explain Roles and have every player choose one. Ask them to choose a starting rank and then assign stats. Ask each of the recruits how their Role and stats are obvious to the casual observer.

Choose a player for Petrova to have a conversation with. The training begins before we’ve even got our trousers on! Roleplay a short dialog. Make sure you deliver the following information, but keep it short.

I’m Senior Lieutenant Petrova. What’s your name? Where are you from? We’ll be dividing you out into pilots and navigators based on aptitude, but

you will both be qualified for either seat. Pilots in front, navigators in back. These airplanes are simple. Fuel and oil are gravity fed, so don’t fly upside-

down. An air cooled engine. No oil filter, just a mesh screen. Open cockpits. Many things can go wrong. Flying at night is strange and challenging. Memorize your cockpit layout. Down and to your left: Throttle, fuel mix lever,

fuel cutoff switch, carburetor heat and elevator trim. Left dash switch bank: Pitot heat, master battery, panel lights, two magneto switches. Gages - Fuel, altitude, airspeed, heading, attitude. Climb rate and engine RPM. Oil pressure and temperature. Fuel pressure gage. Cylinder temperature.

I’ve reviewed your files and you are quite a mixed bag, aren’t you?

As Senior Lieutenant Petrova, ask each player one question, for example: What did you do when your first flight instructor failed you because you were

a woman? What did you lie about on your regimental intake form? Why did you want to join the 586th Fighter Regiment so badly? Who do you routinely see from your brother unit, the well equipped, all-male

218th night bomber regiment, and where, and why? Who do you know in your sister unit, the photogenic media darlings of the

mostly-female 586th fighter regiment, and how do you feel about her? Who do you know in the 4th Air Army Logistics and Supply Commissariat,

and what favor do you owe them? Who do you know occupied territory, silent since June of ‘41? Whose funeral did you miss by volunteering for flight training?

Senior Lieutenant Petrova, satisfied with our answers, tells us that the Major is waiting on the flight line, and we file out to meet her.

Page 37: NIGHT WITCHES - img.fireden.net · Moes Add moves when directed by advancement. Name Choose one Ran Choose Sergeant or r. Lieutenant Role Choose one. Change it when directed by a

PART FOUR: FLIGHT LINE, ENGELS AIRDROMEThe regiment’s Po-2’s are in formation on the flight line, each fragile craft lovingly tended by a pair of mechanic-armorers. Senior Lieutenant Petrova forms us into rough order and salutes a stern older woman with gold shoulder boards - the Major. Next to her is Captain Lobodeva, who we met on the ferry - her Chief of Staff - along with several other officers. The Major looks us over. “Comrades, welcome to the regiment,” she says, “I am Major Yevdokiya Ber-shanskaya, your commander. I will expect you to comport yourselves at all times as natural-born Soviet airwomen. We will fly these” - and she points to the biplanes behind her. “The Polikarpov Po-2 LNB. A simple two-seat canvas-and-wood biplane has been determined to be ideal for our mission by the great operational minds of the Fourth Army Air Force, and we are cer-tainly not going to doubt their wisdom in this matter. Let’s talk about that mission, shall we?”

I, [NAME], promise to rise to the defense of my Motherland, the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, as a fighting man [sic] of the Worker’s and Peasant’s Red Army, I promise to defend it bravely, skillfully, with dignity and honor, sparing neither my blood nor my life itself for the achievement of total victory over our enemies.

Choose a player for Major Bershanskaya to speak to. Roleplay a short dialog. Make sure you deliver the following information, but keep it short.

What’s your name? Did you train with a Comsomol flying club or a glider school or as part of an agricultural technical academy?

There are three places you can put a bullet that will break the Po-2: The small fuel tank, the compact engine, or the pilot. Anything else just passes through and you keep flying. And, honestly, the pilot doesn’t count because you have a spare.

There is no radio in a Po-2. Individual aircrews communicate with hand signals or by using a speaking tube, and communication between planes in the same section is by flashlight, flare or hand signal. We will work together so closely, night after night, that you will be able to read another plane’s intention by instinct.

The Po-2 is not a fighter but a bomber. Each wing has six attachment points for FAB-50 fragmentation bombs. The release mechanism for these bombs is unreliable. In the event of a hanging bomb, you navigators need to climb out on the wing and release it manually. When FAB-50s aren’t available, we will drop sawed-off railroad ties.

Since our mission profiles rarely have us flying above 1200 meters and weight is at a premium, parachutes are not standard equipment.

Formation drill at 1700; I expect you to be crisp. It is now my pleasure to administer the oath of a Soviet soldier and induct you into the Red Army Air Force Fourth Air Army.

Have all the players stand, and stand yourself. Administer the following oath:

Major Bershanskaya dismisses us and Captain Lobodeva congratulates us, pointing the way to the mess tent so we can finally get some chow after a busy morning. She tells us that classroom instruction begins tomorrow at dusk, in Classroom F.

Page 38: NIGHT WITCHES - img.fireden.net · Moes Add moves when directed by advancement. Name Choose one Ran Choose Sergeant or r. Lieutenant Role Choose one. Change it when directed by a

PART FIVE: CLASSROOM F

Choose a player for Captain Barsukova to single out, after consulting her notes. Roleplay a short dialog. Make sure you deliver the following information, but keep it short (albeit long-winded!). Barsukova can drone on a little.

What’s your name, Comrade? Where are you from? Would you say that en-emies of the people - the bourgeoisie of course, but also aristocrats, religious figures, social parasites, eggheads, nationalists - are these dangerous elements any less a threat than the Fascists?

We’re all here to protect the regiment, But think carefully about “helping your friends”, comrades. Military personnel who fail to report treason are them-selves subject to ten years imprisonment.

When I find a counter-revolutionary I will arrest her. If I find someone un-dermining or weakening the external security of the USSR by means of slack-ing or wrecking, or parasitism or aiding the enemy, well that is treason, my friend. Section 58-1B clearly states that treason by military personnel incurs an immediate death sentence. Should the offender run away, the same statute allows for the imprisonment of her relatives for five to ten years.

Listen, I want you to have success here so I will warn you about section 58-14, which deals with counter-revolutionary sabotage. Conscious non-execution or deliberately careless execution of defined duties, aimed at the weakening of the power of the government and of the functioning of the state apparatus, is subject to at least one year of imprisonment, and under especially aggravating circumstances, up to the highest measure of social protection: execution, with confiscation of property. I burn for the opportunity to hang a saboteur. I hope we understand each other.

The following morning we find yourselves in a crowded tent configured as a classroom. The pungent smell of aviation gasoline permeates everything, and the roaring of aircraft occasionally interrupts a lesson. Our first class is on political consciousness for aviation troops, and is conducted by two women in the grey tunics of NKVD officers. The NKVD is the Soviet secret police, and her officers are not to be trifled with. Two are attached to every regiment.“Good morning Trainees, “ says the ranking officer, “I am Captain Olga I. Barsukova and this is my Deputy, Lieutenant Svetlana Sheremeteva. Our job is to encourage your continued development as politically conscious and socially engaged Communists. But we must never forget that we are also military officers with security responsibilities within the regiment. ”

As Captain Barsukova, ask each player one question, for example: What did the Germans take from you? Were your parents actually guilty? Why does the NKVD already have a file on you, and how did you get around

that black mark to join the regiment? What does the Marxist-Leninist struggle against the forces of reaction mean

to you personally? When you were last disciplined, by whom, and what was the reason? When did you get a favor because of your gender, and how did you pay it back? What would you be doing if they didn’t let you fly? What happened the last time a crowd of brother airmen wolf whistled at you?

After handing out some inspirational literature, Captain Barsukova dismiss-es us. We have thirty minutes to wolf down some kasha before classroom instruction in land navigation with Senior Lieutenant Petrova begins.

Page 39: NIGHT WITCHES - img.fireden.net · Moes Add moves when directed by advancement. Name Choose one Ran Choose Sergeant or r. Lieutenant Role Choose one. Change it when directed by a

PART SIX: FLIGHT TRAINING

Ask them to assign tail numbers to their four airplanes. Any number between 001 and 200 is fine. Make sure everyone notes the composition of the training section on the back of their nature playbook.

After a week of monotonous classroom instruction under the tutelage of Cap-tain Barsukova and Senior Lieutenant Petrova, we are formed into a three-aircraft section as part of the training squadron. Each section has three pilots and three navigators. Which of us volunteered earliest?

Orient the players to the night side of Duty Station 1. Check off the first mission and run the night flying exercise - ask the section leader to brief the airwomen, run the mission, then debrief. Since there is no initial mission pool, it is likely to go poorly. Senior Lieutenant Petrova will not be pleased if so. Regardless, explain how mission pool works and why it is valuable.

Finally we are ready for our first training flight. We’ve all flown before in civilian life, but now we will be expected to fly as a team, under difficult and possibly deadly circumstances, with precision and courage.

A month has passed - it is now March 1942. We’ve been flying relentlessly, every night, for thirty straight days. We are exhausted but the pace only quickens. The Red Army Air Force has been decimated and is slowly rebuild-ing. The time has come to begin tactical training and skill building to bring the regiment up to 4th Air Army standards.

Ask each player an introspective, personal question, for example: When has your sexuality gotten you in trouble? When has your sexuality gotten you out of trouble? In what ways do you dress or look like a woman? In what ways do you dress or look like a man? Whose picture will you tape to your plane’s dash? Who in the regiment evokes the strongest feelings from you, and why? When we search your footlocker, what surprising thing do we find? What did the Soviet state take from you?

Present some vignettes of daytime life around Engels Airdrome. There can be direct challenges from men from the 217th or 218th, news reporters from Pravda, mechanical problems, whatever seems interesting based on what has already been established. Make sure there are opportunities to build mission pool based on the character’s interests and personalities. When night falls, check off the second mission and run the mock bombing run - ask the section leader to brief the airwomen, run the mission, then debrief. anyone participating in this mission deepens ties and earns an advance - mark it off and fill in a Regard slot. Explain why Regard is valuable.

Decide who it is. If somebody chose the Role of Zealot, it’s a good bet they volun-teered as soon as they possibly could after the war started.

Congratulations, you are the provisional section leader and responsible for the deportment and proficiency of the five women under your command. Give everyone a post - pilot or navigator - and assign them to individual planes. The reserve plane is a beat-up reserve of dubious airworthiness.

April, 1942. After another month of grueling training, the pace has become frantic. Supplies are becoming rarer as the combat situation becomes more and more uncertain. The regiment’s airplanes are suffering, and pressure from our staff officers continues to mount. Not only are we expected to be-come excellent pilots and navigators, we are also expected to be model Soviet airwomen, perfect in every way. Something has got to give.

Present more daytime vignettes, seasoned with desperation and failure. They may need to scrounge or repair. Captain Barsukova will be looking for shirkers, wreckers and saboteurs. Word might go out that anyone performing poorly will be cut from the regiment. As before, make sure there are opportunities to build mission pool based on the character’s interests and personalities. When night falls, check off the final mission and run the live bombing run with “aggressive” opposing forces from the all-male 217th Fighter Division under D.P. Galunov. After the debreif, anyone participating in this mission learns a harsh lesson and earns an advance - mark it off and choose a move.

That’s it - play time is over. Senior Lieutenant Petrova informs us that word has come down from the Major that tomorrow we will be shipping out for the Caucuses. Sergeant Kataeva has travel vouchers for the ferry and a train from Saratov departs tonight. We’ve been assigned to 2-Squadron where we will comprise A-Section. Good luck, and we’ll all meet again in Trud Gornyaka.

Change to duty station 2, choose an initial GM, and continue playing!

NIGHT WITCHES: PASHKOVSKAYA NOCTURNEThis document consists of a guided one-shot that includes creating characters, building an airbase and playing out a few day and night cycles. Your goal should be to introduce the players to the world of Night Witches and show off the system and color. The episodic nature of missions means you can fill a two or four hour time frame easily. To use this you’ll need a copy of Night Witches, nature playbooks, move sheets, and the third duty station handout (Pashkovskaya). Also: Pencils, dice, mission pool tokens, snacks, water and index cards. To prepare, print out all the necessary documents. In each playbook, check off seven marks. Choose however you like, leaning toward stuff that is either more interesting long-term or doesn’t present an opportunity for action and drama. Ultimately this is a minor decision; the key is to leave four marks and “Embrace Death” to apply some thematic pressure.Invite no more than four adult players. Seriously! Six will want to play but be strong or everyone will have a bad time. Don’t play with children either. When it is time to play, welcome everyone. Discuss safety and make sure they know they are free to leave the table at any time without harming the game. Consider using an X-Card. Once everybody is checked in and ready to play, give them the one minute overview:

Have all the players stand, and stand yourself. Administer the following oath: I, [NAME], promise to rise to the defense of my Motherland, the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, as a fighting man [sic] of the Worker’s and Peasant’s Red Army, I promise to defend it bravely, skillfully, with dignity and honor, sparing neither my blood nor my life itself for the achievement of total victory over our enemies.

We’re playing Soviet women in an all-female night bomber regiment during World War Two. We’ll be pilots, navigators, mechanics and political officers. Our mission is to harass the German army, which has invaded our country. The war is brutal and horrific. We fly obsolete biplanes and drop bombs or, when we don’t have bombs, rail-road ties on the Germans. Things are desperate. It is incredibly dangerous. We fly in darkness, sometimes a dozen missions each night. The Soviet army wishes we didn’t exist and nobody expects us to succeed. We are going to succeed anyway.

Ask them to choose playbooks and make characters together. You don’t need to make one but you can if you want, possibly to use as an NPC to fill out the Sec-tion and also as an example. They should have a name, Role, look/background, rank and stats. Ask each player to describe their character as a raw recruit, still in civilian clothes a year ago. How could you tell their Role from the way they carried themselves? How could you tell their Nature by the way they dressed?

NIGHT WITCHES: PASHKOVSKAYA NOCTURNE

Ask them to Advance their characters six times, encouraging them to take no more than two from each category and explaining the benefits of each. Ask them not to change the duty station unless you are prepared to roll with that. Feel free to ask them why they were promoted or how they got that medal.

As a final step in character creation, ask them what has changed about their character’s appearance after a year of hard fighting, and ask them a pointed question as well, such as:

What did you lie about on your regimental intake form? Who do you routinely see from your brother unit, the well equipped, all-male

218th night bomber regiment, and where, and why? Whose funeral did you miss by volunteering for flight training? What does the Marxist-Leninist struggle against the forces of reaction mean

to you personally? What happened the last time a crowd of brother airmen wolf whistled at you? When has your sexuality gotten you in trouble? Whose picture will you tape to your plane’s dash? When we search your footlocker, what surprising thing do we find?

You should have really interesting, well-differentiated characters now. Hopefully this took about half an hour. Paint a picture of Pashkovskaya for them:

Pashkovskaya was once a civilian airfield, about 10 kilometeres from the ma-jor city of Krasnodar. Now it is home to the 588th and their brother unit, the 218th Night Bomber Regiment. Resources are shared uneasily, and unevenly. When they aren’t mocking you they are stealing from you.

Introduce them to the Pashkovskaya duty station sheet. Fill it out together, al-lowing the players to take the lead. Based on their characters, choose two threats to push, cherry-picking the most interesting angles for your group. If you have a particular threat in mind, feel free to jump in on answering a question or two - maybe you know when Lieuten-ant General Miroshnichenko should arrive for his inspection, for example. Be sure to have them draw the airbase! Once you have an airbase, some characters and a couple of threats, you are ready to play!

Begin with a dawn debrief after a mission. Appoint the ranking character Sec-tion leader and ask her player what they did when they saw D-Section fly into a solid wall of flak ahead of them. If they charged ahead, damage two of the planes and give out some harm (2 for one character, 1 for two others). If they turned back, damage one of the planes and immediately drag the Section leader in for an NKVD informal interview as a reward for her timidity and weakened resolve.

The situation in “Pash-KOV-ska”

Filling out the duty station sheet

Opening question

Once everyone has a feel for their character, explain what’s been going on during the previous year:

After accelerated training you were thrown immediately into the war. Your first duty station was a hell-hole called Trud Gornyaka that was basically on the front lines for six months. Mud alternated with ice, you flew out of open fields, and women died terrible deaths right before your helpless eyes - their planes turned into torches by anti-aircraft artillery or German night fighters. You lost a lot of friends. You flew every night.

The situation in “trood gur-NEEK-ah”

Page 43: NIGHT WITCHES - img.fireden.net · Moes Add moves when directed by advancement. Name Choose one Ran Choose Sergeant or r. Lieutenant Role Choose one. Change it when directed by a

The NKVD Is Dangerous Lt. Svetlana Sheremeteva, Deputy Regimental Politruk, is an evil toad who

will pressure and manipulate the women of the Regiment to her own ends. A closeted lesbian, Sveta will corner a likely airwoman and put the moves on her, making it clear that if her advances are rebuffed there will be trouble. (Look for violations of Articles 58 and 133, Put pressure on their families)

After an unsuccessful mission, Captain Barsukova will single someone (or multiple someones) out for a chat, triggering the Informal interview move. This may lead to further complications as moves snowball. (Demand greater zeal and productivity, Look for violations of Articles 58 and 133)

Captain Barsukova volunteers the Section for day labor in Pashkovsky vil-lage, where she has set up a Comsomol youth league that needs advisors for their agricultural projects. Anyone spending their day tending cabbages will suffer 1-harm as they go without rest. (Demand assistance in a nearby village, Demand greater zeal and productivity).

A film crew arrives to document the novelty of an all-female Regiment, under the auspices of the NKVD (this dovetails nicely with Lieutenant General Miro-shnichenko’s visit). The crew will cause all sorts of trouble - sharing their vodka in after-hours parties, making inappropriate advances, asking difficult ques-tions, demanding to fly along on missions. Barsukova and Sheremeteva will tag along to official interviews and give them endless support and encouragement. (Send reporters from Komsomolskaya Pravda, Put pressure on their families)

THREATS AT PASHKOVSKAYA 1

Men Are Assholes Lieutenant General Igor Miroshnichenko, Commander of the Fourth Air

Army, is coming to visit, and somebody decided the 588th would entertain him and “lift morale” among the all-male 218th Night Bomber Regiment by stag-ing a talent show or dance mixer in an old barn on the airbase. Participation is mandatory and a bad show will reflect poorly on the regiment. (Make the Night Witches act like women, laugh at the women of the 588th)

Lieutenant General Miroshnichenko shows up with the aggressive fighter ace Senior Lieutenant Yekaterina Budanova in tow. Budanova serves with the 9th Fighter Regiment and considers the all-female units something of a joke. The event in the General’s honor only reinforces her feelings. (Spotlight a fe-male ace, laugh at the women of the 588th)

After a particularly successful mission, the 218th Night Bomber Regiment takes public credit. (Send Major Popov of the all-male 218th Night Bomber Reg-iment over, Take credit)

Mechanic-armorers from the 218th are caught stealing barrels of engine lu-bricants, which they claim to have a more urgent need for. (“Borrow” resources and equipment, Break the rules and get away with it, Make the Night Witches act like men)

Major Popov’s son, 20-year-old Junior Lieutenant Kiril “Kiryusha” Popov, a dashing co-pilot, tries to befriend a navigator. He’s reviled in his own regiment as a nepotistic daddy’s boy. He’s lonely, obviously well-connected and handsome. (Make the Night Witches act like women, Send Major Popov of the all-male 218th Night Bomber Regiment over if anyone messes with his son)

Gender politics

Paranoia and the Soviet state

Page 44: NIGHT WITCHES - img.fireden.net · Moes Add moves when directed by advancement. Name Choose one Ran Choose Sergeant or r. Lieutenant Role Choose one. Change it when directed by a

The Red Army Is A Pain In The Ass An entire batch of magnetos are defective and spares can’t be had for love or

money. Well, for money, anyway - the Supply Sergeant of the 218th has a few, but the price will be high and not paid in rubles. This may trigger the Scrounge or Repair moves. (Delay vital supplies, Demand a “consideration” - or steal from them)

An inspector from the Central Directorate of Rear Services of the Soviet Army Air Forces, 4th Air Army Logistics and Supply Commissariat arrives to look over the Regiment’s books and address irregularities. Someone clearly in-formed after a necessary theft or other dodgy practices. (Call them to account, rat them out)

Promotion paperwork fails to arrive - perhaps someone chose a promotion Advance and the ceremony was being delayed until the arrival of Lieutenant General Miroshnichenko. (Delay vital paperwork)

Some truck drivers show up in the 588th’s area looking for a good time, may-be with a treasure trove of rare goods to trade. Refined sugar, Irish whiskey, American lend-lease canned goods, perfume, a Turkish carpet, a German bayo-net. Maybe it is a military police or NKVD sting operation. (Loiter around the airbase looking for a party, rat them out)

THREATS AT PASHKOVSKAYA 2

The Regiment Is Full Of Drama 2-Squadron B-Section has a reputation as a bunch of roughnecks. They are

bullies and mean girls, not prone to military discipline and not very effective. Chief of Staff Captain Lobodeva, in an effort to break up the little gang, trans-fers a couple into A-Section. They will not be happy to be placed among proper Soviet airwomen and look for every opportunity to get their new Section in trouble, and their old friends in B-Section are always spoiling for a brawl. (Brew up petty rivalries, introduce know-it-all veterans)

The new replacements are green as grass and wide-eyed with apprehension and barely-concealed terror. Rumor has it that the pretty one is the daughter of a senior Party official, and that if anything happens to her very bad things will follow. (Spread rumors and gossip, introduce green recruits)

It’s someone’s name day, and Sergeant Kataeva has procured a large quanti-ty of alcohol. How many ways can this go wrong? The alcohol has been diverted from use in explosives (meaning the potential for dud bombs), it’s been adulter-ated and is way too potent, word of the party spreads out of control, somebody has to fly drunk, the list goes on. (Celebrate a name day, spread rumors and gossip)

An official letter arrives for someone from home, bearing bad news - the person they write home to is dead, or captured, or missing, or imprisoned as appropriate. The very best way to deliver this news is in the form of Captain barsukova, who has opened and read the letter in advance. (Deliver very bad news from home)
