The star-filled night fascinates us all. People have gazed at the sky in wonder and awe for thousands of years. Regardless of earthly differences in culture, nationality or religion, the heavens are a common meeting ground for all of Earth’s inhabitants. The boundaries we place between us vanish when we look skyward. Whoever, whatever or wherever we are, we all share the same sky.

Join us each year to celebrate the cultures under the moon at the Chehalem Cultural Center’s Annual Fundraiser, Night of the Moon.

Welcome. We invite you to celebrate the Chehalem Cultural Center’s annual Noche de la Luna or Night of the Moon and en-joy this magical evening that honors the arts and culture.

The Chehalem Cultural Center is a gem in our midst. It began with a dream, a belief in the value of bringing art and cul-tural opportunities to our community for all to enjoy. Thanks to the grass roots efforts of dedicated volunteers, today the Center is a place where all people can connect, create, and explore the surrounding world.

Since opening its doors in 2010, over 32,000 people have enjoyed the arts and cultural offerings of the Chehalem Cultural Center, and the 360-degree outreach program touched the lives of more than 1,000 children in under served and rural communities.

Your support and enjoyment of this evening’s festivities will help the Center provide scholarship opportunities and continue to serve the region with these valuable programs.

Celebrate with us. Enjoy this wonderful evening of art and en-tertainment. And thank you for your continued support of the arts and culture in Oregon!

Sincererly,

Night of the Moon Co-Chairs:

Barbara Palmer“I came to Oregon 20 years ago, and fell in love with it because of communities like Newberg. My husband and I live and give here – volunteering with George Fox University, United Way and a variety of other orga-nizations. The Chehalem Cultural Center is near and dear to us, and I couldn’t be more proud to be one of this year’s co-chairs along with my friend and heroes Deb Stevenson who is passionate about children. I’m so impressed by the tireless efforts of everyone at the Center – the board, staff and volunteers – who make this Cultural center, a true gem, shine and provide an outstanding opportunity for the broader community to come together, celebrate and grow.

I’m also proud that my company, Bank of America, un-derstands the value of supporting arts and culture. . My

colleague, Rick Lee has been a founding board member and major donor and I’m excited to join him in volunteering for this event which will impact many lives though the generosity of all of you who have come tonight. We understand that the arts can and should be a place to bring communities together -- and that’s what the Chehalem Cultural Center does every day. Whether it’s through sponsorships for events, grants for programs or the thousands of volunteer hours logged by our em-ployees, Bank of America is here to support the Center and I’m pleased to add my time and gifts.”

Deborah Stevenson“As a business owner, mother and now grandmother, I have volunteered and raised money for a number of causes, but it only took one visit to the Chehalem Cultural Center for me to become inspired to be a supporter and ultimately to co-chair this event. When I volunteered in my children’s schools, I saw needs that were not being met, so we founded Sherwood Education Foundation, where I served as President for five years. Sadly, I have seen first hand the decline of art experiences for children. It is my sincere belief that every single person needs an opportu-nity for art and cultural experiences in order to have a full and complete life. It is this passion for kids and for the arts that has sparked my desire to see this organization continue to grow and thrive, as it offers enrichment to the lives of many. My husband Bob and I prefer to invest our charitable dollars locally. We have observed and appreciate the commitment of CCC to provide a variety of opportunities for exploring creativity, especially in the partnerships formed and the outreach programs offered around the state.”

Dia de los Muertos History

When the Spanish Conquistadors landed 500 years ago in what is now Mexico, they encountered natives practicing a ritual that seemed to mock death. It was a ritual the indigenous people had been practicing for at least 3,000 years. A ritual the Spaniards would try unsuccessfully to eradi-cate. The ritual is known today as “Día de los Muertos” or “Day of the Dead.” Although the ritual has since been merged with Catholic theology, it still maintains the basic principles of the Aztec beliefs that spirits return to Earth for one day each year to be with their families. On that day you cel-ebrate their lives with mementos, food, and other offerings on altars built at home or on their graves.

Ofrendas - AltarsSpirits are welcomed home with the creation of an ofrenda (altar). Many significant objects and gifts for the deceased loved ones are placed on the altars. These objects represent four important elements: water, wind, fire and earth. Water is given to quench the spirits’ thirst from their long journey and is usually put in a clay pitcher or in a glass. Fire is signified by the candles and wind is signified by papel picado (punched paper). The earth element is represented by plands and food, usually pan de muerto (bread of the dead). Other food and drinks like mole, fruit, chocolate, atole, and the deceased’s favorite foods are left at the altars. Copal (an incense used to transmit praises and prayers) is often seen on ofrendas as well. These offerings ensure that the dead will have everything they need for their journey back.

Calacas (skulls) & Sugar SkullsThe Aztecs and other Meso-American civiliza-tions kept skulls as trophies and displayed them during the Day of the Dead. The skulls were used to symbolize death and rebirth. The skulls were used to honor the dead whom the Aztecs and other Meso-American civilizations believed came back to visit during the ceremony. Unlike the Spaniards who viewed death as the end of life, the natives viewed it as the continuation of life. Instead of fearing death, they embraced it. To them, life was a dream and only in death did they become truly awake.

Today, people don wooden skull masks called calacas and dance in honor of their deceased relatives. The wooden skulls are also placed on altars that are dedicated to the dead. Sugar skulls made with the names of the dead person on the forehead are eaten by a relative or friend.

Page 13: Night of the Moon Catalog

13

PAPEL PICADO (punched paper)Papel picado is primarily produced for the celebrations surrounding the Day of the Dead. Over time, the tool used to make papel picado has changed from scissors to chisels because of the greater precision and de-tailing they allow. Traditionally, the art of making papel picado has been passed from generation to generation. Around 1930, the art spread from Huixcolota to other parts of Mexico such as Puebla and Tlaxcala. Some-time in the 1960’s, papel picado spread to Mexico City and from there to the United States and Europe.

PAN DE MUERTO The pan de muertos (Bread of the dead) is a type of bread traditionally baked in Mexico during the weeks leading up to the Día de los Muertos and is eaten on at the grave site or altar of the deceased. Loved ones eat pan de muertos as well as the relative’s favorite foods. The bones represent the lost one (difuntos or difun-tas). The bones are represented in a circle to portray the circle of life.

Cempasuchitl (flor de muerto) Cempasuchitl are marigold flowers. They figure prominently in Day of the Dead celebrations. The word comes from the Nahuatl (the language spo-ken by the Aztecs) and means twenty-flower, referring to the many petals of the flower.

It is believed that in order for the spirits of the dead to reach the altars that have been created for them, families place cempasuchitl petals along a path leading to their homes. Because of the cempasuchitl’s vibrant golden color, the spirits are supposed to be able to reach their homes by simply following the cempasuchitl.

She has spent the past 25 years bringing art into the class-rooms of schools through out the region. As a volunteer she developed and taught art literacy, high school art classes and held “emotionscape” workshops around the county.

In 2005 Loni co-chaired a small band of volunteers to “make a dream come true” by turning a 40,000 sq foot abandoned school into a cultural art center for the region.

Since it’s opening in 2010 the Chehalem Cultural Center has brought art and cultural experiences to schools and the community through outreach programming, classes, performances, cultural events, art and a variety of exhibitions.

The Center embodies the same passion that Loni has for art, children and the commu-nity… she is proud of its accomplishments and looks forward to connecting community and culture through out Oregon.
