    ABOUT NEPAL

    Nepal, landlocked between twin powerhouses China and India, is many things isolated,ancient, awe-inspiring, richly spiritual and desperately poor. With its backdrop o the Hima-layas and unparalleled walking trails, Nepal has long attracted tourists looking or adventure.

    Yet, what is not o ten seen by the world is the poverty that a decade o bloody civil str i ehas wrought across the land. A deadly Maoist uprising against the monarchy over recentyears has wrecked Nepals economy. The country is now dependent on oreign aid and themoney that the booming tourism industry brings in.

    A ter a long struggle, democracy has fnally prevailed a ter a hereditary monarchy rule or most o Nepals known history. Maoist rebels have signed a peace treaty with the current

    government, but Southern Nepalese are now pushing or greater rights and autonomy.Nepal now aces the massive challenge o bringing peace and reconciliation to all itspeoples.

    TEAR FUND IN NEPAL

    TEAR Fund and partner Share and Care Nepal are acilitating a process o change in theimpoverished districts in Kathmandu. The multi-pronged Health and Development Project isimproving the quality o li e or 4,000 desperately poor Nepalese.

    Some o the key objectives o the project include health, education, gender awareness andeconomic improvement among the people o Sindhulpalchok and Kabhreplanchok districts.Share and Care has a strong ocus on the promotion o preventive and curative healthawareness and services.

    Training locals in basic medicine, conducting village outpatient clinics, immunizations, VitaminA supplements and growth monitoring or children, and improving the basic drinking water system are all helping poor amilies to become and remain healthy.

    Teacher training, scholarships or poor school children, and the provision o librar y booksand laboratory materials to schools comprise the education and literacy component o theproject.Combined with an e ective microenterprise programme, mobilizing women in particular and improving agricultural productions, Share and Care is making a practical and real di er-ence in the lives o needy amilies.

    This is a NZAID match unded project. The unding is provided on 4:1 match meaning theNZAID provides 80% while TEAR NZ matches 20% o the total unding o the project eachyear.

    small business. Loans are eventually repaid and reloaned. The money generated rom the business is used to help the amily and the chil-drens education.

    The women also learn about their social status and political rights, and they get to address the violence that takes place against them.

    Share and Care, Nepals nine month literacy and numeracy programme, is reducing instances where women lose their land

    because they have been unable to read sales contracts. Participantsuse what they learn at the programme to improve their agriculturalskills too, since they are now able to read instructional manuals.

    TEAR Funds senior programmes o fcer Bernard Gomes was recently in Nepal and reported that the project is doing well.

    The project is creating a tremendous model o empowerment or women as a result o them being able to join together in groups,called savings groups, locally. In these groups they are not only able tosave money or their uture but also participate in schemes promotinggender equality, he said.

    EMPOWERMENT IN NEPAL In the mountains o Nepal a TEAR Fund New Zealand projectpartner is making a di erence in the lives o women.

    Share and Care Nepal was started in 1993 by Ramesh Khadka,a young Christian believer who was inspired by Jesus instruction

    to love your neighbour as yoursel , (Matthew 19:19, NKJV). Theprojects vision is to build a healthy, empowered, harmonious andcaring community o people that share a love and respect or one

    another, and to provide active suppor t or a better quality o li e.

    The projects main initiatives include community health, basic educa- tion, womens empowerment, HIV/AIDS education and ood secu-rity.

    Working mostly with women, the health component o Shareand Care Nepal aims to educate women about health issues andprovide immunisation or children.

    Through the programmes income-generating scheme, women canstart saving a small amount and then receive a loan to invest in a
