Our Commitment to the future

Key priorities are to:

• Offer a package of apprenticeship opportunities

• Encourage life sciences placements and the exchange of talent between academia and industry

• Design an interactive website with a number of new products including career pathways and

• Develop an offer for SME’s to develop business skills.

There are clear links between this work and the skills objectives outlined in OLS Report, Strategy for UK Life Sciences

• I hope that we can work closely together on developing all four strands of work with employers to improve the skills pipeline for Life

Apprenticeships - In summary

• A package of apprenticeships is on offer for the life sciences industry.

• This includes the laboratory apprenticeship at levels 2 and 3 (LATA) and a Higher Level Apprenticeship (HLA) including a Foundation Degree validated by Kent University at levels 4/5.

• Quintiles, Catalent and GSK are all supporting apprenticeships and taking part in the HLA pilot.

Placements - In summary

• Following some intense research with academia and industry we are developing a proposition for a ‘placements brokerage’.

• Early days but there is support within the Working Group chaired by GSK and attended by the Royal Veterinary College, Society of Biology, Surrey and Reading Universities and others.

• Need to test our findings, and decide whether this is a sustainable proposition

• A future GIF bid?

Skills Signals- In summary

• making good progress on defining career pathways for the sector.

• this is a sub-site and web application featuring a range of career pathways across four life sciences disciplines.

• users will be presented initially with a screen allowing them to make a selection based on their experience/qualifications.

• this will display the four industry areas.

• on selecting an area users will then be able to select individual roles and will be presented with possible pathways from each role.

• they will also be able to select and view detailed descriptions of each role within a pathway.

• site will easily link to the Youth Inspiration Platform and the Cabinet Office ‘I Am’ initiative to engage young people.

• together they will provide a comprehensive e-platform, relevant to the needs of young people and the economy.

Small and Medium Sized Enterprises’ (SMEs) – In Summary

• The first stage of this work has started working with Trade Organisations, Cluster Networks and employers across the sector to define their skills needs.

• In the second stage of our work with SME’s we are developing a proposition based around a Skills Audit, Master class and Mentoring Programme.

• The offer will include an audit of knowledge and skills at all levels within a company, defining the skills ‘gap’ and proposing skills solutions i.e. short courses of specific training, mentoring etc.

• Work in progress. After further consultation we will decide whether this is a sustainable proposition.

Cogent Life sciences Skills Report 2012

• the Cogent Life sciences Skills Report 2012. This will be presented to Ministers in April.

• Setting out the progress and achievements through the work of the LAC and LSSB and including the reports from the four Working Groups.

• It will give a complete history of the Life Sciences Initiative; and detail the objectives of the four Working Groups and their recommendations. It will be synergistic with the Strategy for UK Life sciences Report.

• An early draft will be shared with you all for your review and comments.

Life Sciences Skills Awards 2013

• Planning to host a Life sciences Skills Awards.

• This will be launched in the Autumn at the Cogent HoC Showcase event.

• These awards will celebrate the achievements of those who have exceeded expectations and shown a dynamic approach to training, demonstrated initiative and enterprise, innovation and creativity and shown an understanding and commitment to the improvement of skills development.
