BACKGROUND
Crafts of INDIAN excels in artistic expression and utilitarian
value since prehistoric times. Almost every household in
the rural areas owns a handloom / pitloom. It supports the
life of many weavers, traders, livestock farmers etc. NIEVs
effort are to accumulate the activities of such stakeholders
and uplift the languishing crafts to a level where they canmatch the global product standards.

SIGNIFICANCE
Handlooms are the second largest employment probable in the rural sector, after
agriculture. NIEV takes measure to protect the product uniqueness and regional
handloom brand from unfair competition of duplicate powerloom product made
elsewhere
1. The Handloom Industry in India operates under an intense external environment
and faces the competition of power loom fabrics, produced nationally or even
imported.
2. Many craft pockets have received a major set-back during the last few years forcing
shutdowns, shift to power looms, change of occupation etc.
