NIEU BETHESDA - 2008

WELCOME FROM THE CHAIRMAN

Welcome to Backpacking South Africa's Youth and Aventure Travel Conference 2008 in Nieu Bethesda.

It is in keeping with the free-spirited backpacking ethos that we chose to go off the beaten track to host this year's conference. Backpackers have always been tourism's pioneers in their search for new, authentic experiences and as the organisation representing the youth and adventure travel industry, BSA believed that it should break the mold and host this year's conference in this beautiful Karoo village. No surprise then that this is the first conference ever staged here!

This year, the Youth and Adventure Travel conference takes another giant leap forward with an exciting group of speakers covering a broad range of pertinent topics. With the fantastic support of our main sponsors, the Eastern Cape Tourism Board, Hostelworld and Around About Cars, you'll also be enjoying some first class entertainment in the evenings.

BSA has had another year of rapid growth and this will culminate in the launch at this year's AGM of a new larger organisation incorporating BSA as well as wheels operators, voluntourism businesses, language centres and adventure businesses. This new organisation will thus represent the entire youth travel industry and will be called the South African Youth, Student and Education Travel Confederation in keeping with international naming practises.

But, enough of these formalities, put on your beanie, grab a bottle of sherry and have a mind-blowing conference.

Cheers!David MalherbeChairBackpacking South Africa

Alan Weyer

Historian and Raconteur

SPEAKERS

The story that must be told …

The history of the Eastern Cape frontier may evoke different interpretations, but what cannot be disputed is that it involves the ancestors of people from all over the world. The confluence of African and European cultures which took place in this region shaped modern South Africa.

The mounting pressure from colonial expansion was resisted for over 100 years by the Xhosa people, putting them at the forefront of African resistance and underlining their prominence in South African politics today.

Alan Weyer’s insightful historical knowledge coupled with many truths, tales and legends of the region make for an unforgettable journey through time.

Born, bred and educated in the Eastern Cape; a true son of the Frontier region and of farming stock going back 4 generations, Weyer’s interest in history and people began as a young boy roaming the family farm with his companions and friends; wondering about the lives of those who had once lived in the ruins which littered the farm. Educated at Graeme College in Grahamstown, Alan refused to take history as a matric subject. “Back then, it was a one-sided story, anyway”, he comments.

Today Alan runs a successful business offering sought after lectures throughout the country and tours into the province’s frontier territory. He is also contracted to Kwandwe Private Game Reserve and No 7 Worcester Street, 2 premier tourist destinations, where he talks up a storm about the Frontier country’s engrossing and colourful history.

In 2004 Alan launched his lecture series: Spirits of the Past at South Africa House in London were he spoke to a sold-out audience. He has since been awarded the

• 2005 winner of the prestigious SA Tourism’s Tour Guide of the Year

• 2006, the Grand Prix winner of the inaugural SA Tourism Welcome Awards as the best tourism product in the country.

In addition, Alan is one half of the popular Boet & Swaer comic duo, regaling crowds with their hilarious, dour renditions of farming life in the Eastern Cape and playing to audiences throughout the country, UK and Australia.

Alan is married to Audrey and they have two young daughters, Catherine and Candice. They live in a beautifully renovated crafters cottage in historic Grahamstown.

NIEU BETHESDA

BSA has demonstrated pride in our industry by using a backpackers lodge as the anchor host of the conference. This is an important opportunity to showcase our sector to government and other stakeholders.

Nieu Bethesda is an isolated community, far off South Africa’s main tourism routes. It forms part of the Camdeboo region in the Eastern Cape Karoo that is identified by National Government as a poverty node and a designated tourism development node.

The 2008 conference will make a real and direct difference to the economy of Nieu Bethesda. After government grants, tourism is the biggest contributor to the local economy.

Most of the economically active members of the community, including the township, have been involved in some way in the conference. Some are hosts of conference venues, others offer accommodation, provide catering, cleaning, crafts, guiding, etc.

The delegates have resulted in a more than 10% increase in the annual bed night count alone. Other immediate and long-term benefits are immeasurable.

The catering menu was drawn up to include as much local produce as possible and the majority of the conference supplies were sourced locally.

The Owlhouse Backpackers is environmentally aware and conference delegates will be exposed to permaculture, garbage recycling, solar geysers, compost toilets and grey water systems.

BSA Eastern Cape has brought delegates well off the beaten track. Many will keep on the back roads, learning and seeing more of the Eastern Cape and South Africa en route to the conference and back home.

Nieu Bethesda is a fertile oasis in the arid Great Karoo. Helen Martin’s Owl House is the reason why many people come to this remote village. The lucid light, gigantic skies, babbling water furrows and tender pace of life are why so many stay.

Hi Everyone. I met Hannes when he joined the same company as me, and we became instant friends. 7 years later we both felt fed-up with our jobs and agreed that owning a backpackers lodge would be our choice of work. In 2000 we purchased a run-down Art-Deco style building and started renovating. Deco Lodge was born and still grows 7 years later.
