hen I was a little girl, my motherwould wrap a handmadeknitted scarf tightly around my

neck to keep out the chill on a cold winterday. The scarf was practical, utilitarianand sometimes a little itchy.

Well, I’m a big girl now; and after travelingaround the world and seeing how scarvesare fashionably and fabulously worn bypeople of all cultures, I’m convincedthat the scarf is one of the most importantfashion accessories––one that can make orbreak an outfit.

Designing scarves is fun. Scarves offer aninfinite variety of possibilities. They are chic,colorful, funky and fun and take arelatively short time to knit. Scarves say agood deal about the wearer’s personality,and they make a great gift.

The signature scarves featured in this bookuse all kinds of materials, techniques andstyles. I was fortunate enough to have one ofmy scarves appear on the cover of the 25thanniversary issue of Vogue Knitting magazine,and have included the instructions for thescarf in this book. Many of these designsreally will keep you warm, but not quitelike the heavyweight mufflers that yourAunt Becky used to send you at Christmas,bless her soul.

I invite you to make your favorites ofthese scarves, but I’m warning you––it canbe addictive. Soon you may find yourselfknitting a scarf for every one of your(or a loved one’s) outfits.
