Page 1: Nicki Minaj- Super base' Analysis

Nicki Minaj's music video 'super base' released in 201, produced by 'Cash Money Records'.

This music video fits technical codes during the video. Low angle shots are used to enhance the size of the artist’s breasts and bum, and therefore are sexualising her; this angle is also used to allow Nicki to look empowered and dominant. As well as technical codes the music video also fits technical conventions, the director does this by keeping the video 4 minutes long which fits the conventions of a typical pop music video length.

Symbolic codes are used throughout the music video; she uses these in costumes that she uses. In one scene she conforms to the stereotype of a 'Barbie' by wearing a half pink half white wig, extravagant makeup to appear like a perfect Barbie, she wears a pink fitted jumpsuit which gives her a Barbie persona, another costume Nicki Minaj’s wears is a green wig in a swimming pool; this is to give the illusion that she is a mermaid and therefore more feminine. Nicki Minaj also wears UV clothes and make-up which is normally associated with clubbing and nightclubs which gives the audience a partying feel, this music video also conforms to symbolic conventions by having amounts of money in the scenes, buff men, girls in skimpy outfits and synchronized dancing, this is to conform to pop stereotypes. Lyrics used in this video such as "he never flies coach" implies that she aspires and only lives for the rich way of life and expresses that in her music.
