As a student volunteer in the department, I assisted the full-time staff with day-to-day and game day media relations responsibilities. Those included editing media guides, setting up and overseeing the football pressbox, updating game notes, overseeing student staff, assisting with press conferences, and writing news releases. For the final year of my time as an undergraduate, I served as the secondary media relations contact for the Mississippi State baseball team. During that time, I gained invaluable experience in the day-to-day operations of a sports information director. My main responsibilities were to schedule and monitor interviews with athletes and head coach John Cohen, both during the week and postgame. During games I was also the official statistician, keeping statistics using StatCrew’s Automated Scorebook program.
