PROCESS & IDEATION
blackbloom - organic
In this digital age, it’s true that most of design is done on the computer. It’s because of this fact that I like to get back to basics and draw and sketch when I can and when it is applicable. This logo for a local band is based out of that idea.
I was given a couple weeks to have a finished product to the band and they gave me free reign to create. Around the time of taking on this project I was also into anagram logos and typography. Not traditionally my forte, but being something that I wanted to play around with I took to my sketch book. When I had something that I and the client were happy with I took it into the computer and digitized it and fleshed it out.
Kyle Hensley of Hensley Cpital Management approached me with an interesting idea. He had a startup company in need of a logo and he wanted to use his family’s coat of arms as the logo. This is project is based out of the idea of using the know and what you learn.
Not too long prior to this job I had seen a TED talk presented by Roman Mars, of the podcast 99% Invisible, about flags and what makes a “good” flag. During is presentation he talked about the coat of arms and flag for Amsterdam and how the flag was derived from the escutcheon rather than just slapping the coat of arm on the flag and calling it a day. This act of simplistic design is where I got the idea to just use the escutcheon from the Hensley coat of arms as part of the logo. That along with a stylized blackletter font completed the look I wanted to achieve.
