NICHE 4 Caregivers An ANCC Magnet Recognized Hospital
Judith DellaRipa, RN, FNP-BC, MS, GRN Lynette Loftus, RN, CNOR, GRN
Who Cares for the Caregiver? It became apparent during discussions among 49 clinical and non-clinical staff in the St. Mary’s Hospital Ambulatory Surgical Unit (ASU), that many were “family caregivers”. Though most of the ASU staff are highly trained professionals, giving care to a family member required additional skills and resources for which they often felt unprepared. For those who are balancing the responsibilities and demands of work along with other life roles and relationships, the load can be overwhelming. The skills and availability of a family caregiver can impact the health and well-being of older adults, influencing outcomes such as hospital re-admission, medication compliance, and nutrition.
Bon Secours St. Mary’s Hospital is a NICHE designated facility which serves Richmond and Central Virginia. The hospital is a 391 bed acute care facility with over 2500 employees.
In-hospital surveys determined that our employees who are caregivers reflect the national demographic trends. The identified challenges and needs were both practical and progressive.
Literature reviews indicate that knowledge of support mechanisms and resources for elder care empowers caregivers.
Proposal:An internal intranet site, NICHE 4 Caregivers, was developed by a team of Geriatric Resource Nurses (GRNs) to support employee family caregivers. Links to national websites, a Caregiver’s Bill of Rights, and tools to assess personal stress were included.

I wonder if Dad remembered to take
his medicine this morning?
Employee Feedback:
“I was a caregiver for my father. Having resources when you need them during stressful times is critical as is caring for
myself as a caregiver.”
“To see the support that is available for non-clinicians is a BIG relief.”
“I plan to share the resources with my family as it provides excellent tools for
more easily incorporating long distance elder care.”
“I need information on surviving the emotional ups and downs of every day
mental stress.”
This innovative site provides anticipatory guidance which is crucial because the needs of caregivers will directly impact our health care organization in the future.

Responsibilities?
“78% of adults living in the community and in need of long-term care depend on family and friends as their only source of help.”
“Six in 10 family caregivers are employed.”
“The value of the services family caregivers provide for “free,” when caring for older adults, is estimated to be $375 billion a year. That is almost twice as much as is actually spent on home care and nursing home services combined ($158 billion).”
