Elmer L. Andersen

It is indeed an honor to have Governor Elmer L. Andersen return to the School of Management to deliver the 1982 Commencement address. Since his own graduation from the School (formerly the College and Graduate School of Business Administration) in 1931, Governor Andersen has made distinguished contributions to Minnesota's political, economic, educational and civic affairs.

As a young man, Governor Andersen had three ambitions: to serve in the state legislature, to own a farm and to run a weekly newspaper. His years as a state senator (1949-58) and as Governor of the State of Minnesota (1961-63) fulfilled the first of those goals. His active involvement in the management of Deer Lake Farm, a 750-acre, family-owned dairy and cattle-raising enterprise fulfills the second. And, as the owner of Princeton Publishing, Inc. and Sun Newspapers, Inc., Governor Andersen's third ambition is a reality.

However, those achievements, significant as they are, reflect only a few of the contributions Governor Andersen has made to the State of Minnesota. As a member and chairman of the Board of Regents of the University of Minnesota (1967-75), he has provided the kind of leadership and dedication to higher education that are so vital to a major research institution. In addition, he has held countless leadership positions in a variety of foundations, societies, and other non-profit organizations. As a recipient of numerous awards from statewide, national and international organizations, Governor Andersen has been widely recognized as an outstanding leader and role model.

3

Page 6: ~ni&crsity of 4fl[inncsota

Governor Andersen's outstanding achievements in government and education are reflected in his career as a businessman. He is currently chairman of the board of H. B. Fuller Company, having joined the firm in 1934 when it was a one-plant operation with less than $150,000 in annual sales. Under his able leadership, the H. B. Fuller Company grew to $300 million in sales with multi-plant operations throughout the world. He is widely known for his management philosophy which encourages the development of strong executives through support of creative approaches and independent thinking.

A resident of St. Paul, Governor Andersen is married to Eleanor Johnson Andersen, and they have three children. The School of Management is proud to recognize and commend one of Minnesota's finest citizens - the Honorable Elmer L. Andersen.
