Dear friends and honored guests,

Welcome to our beautiful city of Montreal!

It is with great pleasure that we host you this year for the NHSA Fall Convention. Today, students of Hellenic descent have come to Montreal from across North America to cultivate new friendships, build professional networks, and nurture their Hellenic culture. We would like to thank everyone who has con-tributed in any way towards making this event happen.

The NHSA Fall Convention would not have been possible without our incredible Organizing Committee and our volunteers, who have selflessly dedicated themselves to this project since last February. Although at times the Convention seemed to be a herculean task, each and every member and volunteer relentless-ly soldiered on, not for themselves, but for their culture, their friends and their community. We would like to thank them from the bottom of our hearts for bringing the Convention to life and making the experi-ence of chairing it so enjoyable.

Finally, putting this Convention together would not have happened without our incredible sponsors. We would like to thank them for believing in the Hellenic youth. The results of this belief, and the strength of the youth, can be seen today, in the many faces that have arrived from across North America to main-tain the Hellenic flame and work towards a better Greece, here in the Diaspora, and back home in our πατρἰδα. Their continued investment in the Hellenic students of North America will, without a doubt, help the youth of today reach bigger and better heights tomorrow.

We hope you enjoy today’s conference and wish you a wonderful weekend.

Warmest regards,

EMBASSY OF GREECEIN CANADA

Message by the Ambassador of Greece to Canada, H.E. Eleftherios Anghelopoulos, on the occasion of the NHSA Fall 2013 Montreal Convention

It is with great pleasure that I extend a warm welcome to all the Greek students, from around Canada and the USA, attending the Fall 2013 Montreal Convention of the National Hellenic Student Association.

NHSA’s role, as the largest student organization in North America, is instrumental in bring-ing Greek students together, and in actively promoting, through its many initiatives, the bonding among them. I congratulate you for all your accomplishments. Through your coordi-nated efforts and in particular your Conventions, your Association contributes significantly to the bright future of our dynamic and thriving academic, professional and cultural, Hellenic Community in Canada and the USA as well as to the expansion of their strong partnership with Greece.

I would like to express my appreciation for your support and solidarity with Greece and the Greek people as they deal with the economic crisis, undergoing great hardships. Today, I would like to share with you a message of optimism: we can come out of the crisis, stronger, wiser, more united, more self-confident and more competitive. This could only be achieved by uniting all the forces of Hellenism and in particular its youth. Hellenic Youth across the world, armed with knowledge, motivation, and a thirst for solution, constitutes an endless source of optimism, as we look into the future.

You have the power, the skills and the drive to play a key role in this national endeavour. We are counting on you to create, to lead, to innovate. Be bold, be courageous, be your best.

You, the students of today, will be the contributors to our society from a leadership position tomorrow, carrying the torch of Helle-nism as a guiding light. Use the eternal values of Hellenism at every level and at every opportunity in your professional careers and in your everyday lives.

Let us create new dynamics of partnership with the USA and Canada by using the comparative advantage of Greece and lLhe talents of the Greek people, to take this relationship to a new higher level. Encourage all NHSA members to participate in building stronger, more vibrant new bridges with the youth in Greece. Share your thoughts and vision with them, network with them as together you will build a new future for Greece.

With these thoughts, I would like to congratulate you for your successful presence in prestigious universities of the US and Canada, which truly honours Greece in an immeasurable and commendable way. I extend also my warmest wishes to all the members of the NHSA, and assure you that I look forward to continuing my close cooperation with you in order to promote joint activities for the benefit of all Greek students, Hellenism and our Motherland.

With cordial greetings,

Eleftherios Anghelopoulos Ambassador

CONSULATE GENERAL OF GREECEIN MONTREAL

Hon. Thanos Kafopoulos Consul General of Greece in Montreal

Dear Friends,

I felt great pleasure when I was informed that the wonderful and multicultural city of Montreal was chosen to host the National Hellenic Student Association of North America Convention. My warmest congratulations to the Bidding and Organizing team for their great energy, continuous efforts and drive. We have worked together closely from the beginning and to see our efforts to reach frui-tion is a source of great satisfaction.

This city that prides itself for many reasons. One of the most important is that it is the second largest student city in North America, as well the second larg-est francophone city in the world. Montreal is, of course, also a city that 80,000 Greek Canadians call home. Furthermore, it has the unique distinction of having five primary schools in which Greek is taught intensively, with 1,500 students. These schools have managed to preserve the language and traditions of Hellenism in a constructive and harmonious manner, to the point where the Greek community of Montreal has the highest proportion of Greek speakers among its youth than any other Greek community outside Greece and Cyprus.

The General Consulate has been working in close cooperation with the Greek-Canadian student bodies trying to make Hellenism more present in an organized way at the city’s Universities. In this regard, we have tried to revitalize and establish links with the Hellenic Societies at McGill, Concordia and Universite de Montreal. Furthermore, we have created the Hellenic Student Association of Montreal (HSAM), as an umbrella organization to coordinate and liaise. HSAM, with the support of the Consulate, organizes every year a “Meet and Greek”, as a Greek-Canadian networking and fun event.

This weekend’s convention is a great chance for every participant to forge links with Greek Americans and Greek Canadians from all over North America. For us in Montreal, it is a special opportunity to galvanize the student body here and stir greater interest in issues pertaining to Hellenism. Also, it is the culmination of a three year effort to identify, organize and energize the Greek Canadian student body of Montreal.

I urge you wholeheartedly to continue and double your efforts setting ever higher goals. As Greece is going through the worst crisis since the Second World War, we should all join forces to contribute productively to our ancestral homeland. For example, you could create scholarships for underprivileged Greeks to come and study in North America. Also, you could arrange for student exchanges between Universities in North America and Greece. In all, you can be one of the branches that will give life back to the country of Greece. I know that you have been working on some initiatives already and I wholeheartedly congratulate you.

As a final note, I warmly welcome you to the cultural mosaic of Montreal and wish you to have an unforgettable time. I also feel the need to congratulate one more time the wonderful team of Greek Montrealers that made this weekend possible!

Regards,

Thanos Kafopoulos

The National Hellenic Student Association (NHSA) of North America The NHSA is currently the largest Hellenic (university) student organization in North America, acting as the umbrella organization for 45 Hellenic Student Associations across 45 universities in both Canada and the United States. It represents Greek students from universities such as Harvard, Brown, Cornell, Columbia, Stanford, University of Pennsylvania, UC Berkley, University of Toronto, York University, Concordia University, McGill University, Boston University, North-eastern, Northwestern, Duke, University of Chicago, Drexel, and so on. Currently, the NHSA is working on building student exchange programs between universities in Greece and North America, providing info-sessions to students in Greece to students seeking to study in North America, as well as other initiatives which can be found at www.nhsaofamerica.org.

HOSTS The McGill Hellenic Student Association (MHSA) and the Hellenic Students’ Association of Concordia (HSAC), as members of the NHSA, are the co-hosts for this convention. In February, they set up a Convention Committee, which was tasked to plan and propose a convention to the NHSA board. Having won the bid, the Convention Committee is now the organizing body for the two associations tasked with executing the convention. The committee consists of students from both associations’ executive boards and students from the University of Montreal and University of Ottawa.

CONVENTION THEME

“The Human Face of Crisis”: Economics & Politics. We’ve heard it all before. This is the main narrative driving any dominant view of Greece today. So let’s take a different approach; let’s look at the human cost of this crisis, at face value. We want to see how it has affected people beyond the theory that we already know. The children, the mothers, and the fathers, those who have been impacted deeply and are barely making it, are the most important aspect of the crisis. What are people doing under these conditions to survive? How can they possibly survive? These are the questions we are asking, with the hope that we can find some of the answers to at the convention through our tailored panel discussions.

EXTRA PROCEEDS

All extra proceeds made from this convention will be used to set up a scholarship for students from Greece wishing to study in Mon-treal.

Montreal was founded in 1535 by Jacque Cartier who sailed from France in hopes to find a route to Asia, instead discovering the Saint-Lawrence River. Montreal also known as MTL or the 514, it is the largest city in Quebec and second largest in Canada. Known for their multiculturalism, amazing food, night life, overly excited hockey fans, and stop signs that say “ARRET” instead of STOP. When one comes to Montreal they can’t leave without trying our famous bagels, smoke meat, maple syrup and most importantly poutine. It is never a dull moment in Montreal; with a vibrant Greek community having ongoing events all year long there’s always something to do! The following are some ideas:

Hon. Thanos Kafopoulos, Consul General of Greece in Mon-treal

Official Address

His Excellency, Eleftherios Anghelopoulos, Ambassador of Greece to Canada

Keynote Speaker

Dr. Othon Alexadrakis York University, Assistant Professor of Anthropology

We would like to thank The Phrixos B. Papachristidis Chair of Mod-ern Greek and Greek-Canadian Studies for sponsoring Dr. Othon Alexadrakis' keynote speech.

SPEAKERS & MENTORS

TOPIC 1 This panel discussion, entitled “A day in the life…”, will first seek to explore the effects that the current crisis is having on the daily lives of families liv-ing in Greece, with a special emphasis on the very “human” aspect of the crisis. Speakers will draw awareness to the impact that the current crisis is having on the people of Greece in an array of societal domains such as recreation, leisure &tourism, health care, education, daily living, culture, and general well-being. In an effort to offer hope and inspire youth of the Hellenic Diaspora to strive towards making a difference through our Con-vention, speakers will be encouraged to also explore and discuss possible solutions to the challenges that they present in their talks, as well as draw attention to existing initiatives that are making a difference in the lives of Greek citizens already. Thus, “A day in the life…” will offer Convention attendees and delegates a unique view of the current crisis with a special focus on the human impact of the crisis; our panel of esteemed guest speakers will not only offer numerous and diverse perspectives but also inspire a sense of hope in the audience.

Panelists:

- Dr. George Karlis, University of Ottawa Recreation, Leisure and Tourism Studies

- Dr. Anastassios Anastassiadis, McGill University Assistant Professor of History; Phrixos B. Papachristi dis Chair in Modern Greek Studies at McGill.

- Mr. Basil Papaevagelou, RBC Wealth Management Investment Advisor

- Dr. Kenneth Matziorinis, McGill University Economics and International Business

TOPIC 2In light of a present-day society that is highly dependent on media, an age characterized by globalization, and the undeniable impact of image and stereotypes on any given reputation, this panel discussion will seek to explore the portrayal of the current crisis in Greece by the media and its impact on the image of Greece on a local and global stage. Entitled “Pseu-do-media”, this panel discussion will encourage dialogue between guest speakers and the audience on such topics as the discrepancy between what is shown in the media and what the real story behind the crisis is, the consequences of bias in the media on Greece’s reputation on the global stage, and the role that stereotypes represented in the media has played on the portrayal of the crisis thus far. Guest speakers will represent diverse perspectives and a number of media forms, both in the traditional sense of the word and in alternative forms. In an effort to inspire a sense of hope for a better, more positive image of Greece in the future, this panel discus-sion will also explore key concepts such as re-branding Greece, as well as various ways that the image of Greece can be rightfully improved and better-represented on an international level.

Panelists:

- Justine Frangkouli-Arguris Correspondent for the Athens News Agency (ANA), Eleftherotypia and Ethnos newspapers

- Aphrodite Salas Journalism, Reporter for CTV Montreal

- Stathis Haikalis Up Greek Tourism Representative

DOCUMENTARY Smyrna: The Destruction of a Cosmopolitan City 1900-1922

“What was cosmopolitan Smyrna on the coasts of Western Anatolia, like at the beginning of the 20th century? How did the Greeks, the largest Christian community, live side by side with the Muslims, the Levantines, the Armenians and the Jews ? What was so unique about this Mediterranean port in the Ottoman Empire, which even today, 90 years after the Destruction is still linked to a joie de vivre during the good times and dirges for the Destruction that came so suddenly in September 1922? Through unknown photographic archives and film footage, collected and preserved in the United States and Europe by the non profit organization Proteas, director Maria Iliou, historical consultant Alexander Kitroeff and their collaborators unfold a fascinating story in a documentary film that pre-miered at the Benaki Museum in Greece in January 2012, played till March 2012 and was a huge success.” –smyrnadocumentary.org Director Maria Iliou will be screening her documentary at McGill on October 25th. A panel discussion will follow the screening with Ms. Iliou as a panelist. A wine and cheese will follow. The Papachristidis Chair has invited the convention to include this event and promote it to its guests.

Tasso Anastassiadis

I'm originally from Thessaloniki and before coming to Canada, I studied philosophy, political sci-ence, sociolinguistics and history in the USA and France. However, I did start as a nuclear physics major and I still believe that there is more connection between the natural and social sciences that people will usually give me credit for. I enjoy getting my history students off-balance by talk-ing to them about the law of entropy or the Heisenberg uncertainty principle or chaos theory just as I do to my science colleagues by discussing paradigmatic revolutions and scientific fields. Following the Ph.d., I held teaching positions at the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Socia-les (EHESS), the Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudes (EPHE) and Sciences-Po in Paris and spent 3 years as a researcher for the French School of Archeology, Classical and Modern Greek Studies in Athens. I study activists and institutional change, the role of foreign actors in Greek reforms, as well as the evolution of educational practices and networks in the Eastern Mediterranean during the 19th and 20th c. Stathis Haikalis - Up Greek tourism

We chose to support tourism because of its significant potential in supporting and restart-ing the Greek economy. Accounting for 18% of Greek GDP and almost 20% of employ-ment, tourism is the heavy industry of Greece. Our tourism industry, even under condi-tions of financial crisis, can offer a competitive quality product to the in-bound tourist.

The main objective of the ‘UP Greek Tourism’ campaign is to promote Greek tourism abroad in two ways: directly, through the outdoor advertising campaign, and indirectly through the word of mouth created through traditional and social media who will re-pro-duce the campaign. Additionally we hope to inspire Greeks to think of innovative personal initiatives to help the Greek economy and we also want to demonstrate to the world that Greek people remain an innovative, resilient and hospitable nation. This is a grassroots campaign, for the Greek people, by the Greek people.
