One of the six main objectives of the Government’s new mental health strategy for England “No health without mental health”, launched in February this year, is that ‘more people with mental health problems will recover’. This “Recovery Edition” of Inview explores

the exciting developments that the Trust has made to support people to go beyond the limits of their mental illness and regain a meaningful life for themselves.

CNWL HQ to move in OctoberFrom October this year, CNWL’s headquarters will be relocating to a new site at: Stephenson House, 75 Hampstead Road, London NW1 2PL. Tel: 020 3214 5700 Email: [email protected]

This will be the new address for all correspondence relating to the Trust. Our contact number and email address remain the same.

The move provides the Trust with the opportunity to make a large cost saving, by taking advantage of the current market conditions to secure a fixed rent for the next seven years.

Stephenson House has excellent transport links, with Euston railway station, Euston Square and Warren Street underground stations and buses serving the Euston Road, all close by.

Local Healthwatch

pathfinders are announced

The Government has launched 75 local HealthWatch pathfinders, which will champion patients’ views, promote integration of local services and help improve choice for patients, ahead of the full roll-out of local HealthWatch across England in October 2012.

Local HealthWatch will replace Local Involvement Networks (LINks) and provide a collective voice for patients and carers and advise the

new Clinical Commissioning Groups to ensure that the views of the local community help inform the shaping of local services.

HealthWatch England will also be launched in October 2012 to ensure that the collective views of the people who use NHS and adult social care services influence national policy and guidance. A list of the 75 pathfinders can be found here: http://www.dh.gov.uk/health/2011/08/healthwatch-pathfinders/

Update on NHS reforms

The exercise was led by the NHS Future Forum, an independent group made up of 45 health and social care experts who, after extensive consultation, published its recommendations in June. The recommendations have been accepted by Government and a summary of the Government’s response can be accessed here: http://healthandcare.dh.gov.uk/government-response-to-nhs-future-forum/

In April, the Government began a listening exercise to reflect on the proposed reforms to the NHS set out in Health and Social Care Bill.

CPS Head of Nursing receives award Maggie Bisset, Head of Nursing at Camden Provider Services, has been awarded The Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother Award for Outstanding Service from the Queen’s Nursing Institute (QNI).

With a certificate personally signed by the Patron of the QNI, Her Majesty the Queen, this is one of the QNI’s most prestigious awards.

The award citation clearly reflects Maggie’s strengths both as a palliative care specialist and as head of nursing: “Maggie offers exemplary leadership.

She provides a clear vision for community nursing, encouraging nurses to develop their skills and influence. She has a personal manner which consistently makes everyone feel better about themselves and their work after they have spoken to her; but at the same time Maggie gets things done.”

World Mental Health Day 2011

World Mental Health Day (10 October) celebrates the promotion of mental health and wellbeing to help dispel some of the myths and stigma surrounding mental illness.

Mental health has developed a greater social profile over the years, helped by celebrities sharing their own experiences of mental health problems in an attempt to create a better understanding of the issues. The pressures of life are recognised as a major contributor to developing mental health problems, it is therefore important that everyone knows how to maintain

their mental health and wellbeing.

In collaboration with London mental health trusts, local voluntary organisations and the national Time to Change programme, events are taking place from 7 - 14 October, where people can find out about local services and get advice about managing personal mental health and wellbeing:

Collingham Child and Family Unit receives prestigious accreditation

The Child Inpatient Service at the Collingham Child and Family Unit has become one of the first in the UK to receive QNIC (Quality Network for Inpatient CAMHS) accreditation status by the Royal College of Psychiatrists.

The rigorous accreditation process involved a peer review visit, which found very high levels of satisfaction among the young people and parents interviewed as part of the process. Parents, in particular, felt very informed and involved

in the care of their children and commended the teaching provision and education delivered at the Unit. The young people appreciated the welcoming atmosphere and the excellent range of facilities.

A year of growth Our Annual Report and Accounts were presented at the Annual General Meeting held on the 15 September. Here is a summary of our main achievements for the year 2010/11:

April 2010

Through our Placement Efficiency Project, we have been working to identify individuals currently being treated outside of the CNWL geographical area, re-evaluating their care package and selecting new models of care, closer to where they live.

May 2010

Our international work continued as we strengthened links with the Mirembe Hospital in Tanzania where our project team is working closely to support staff and share learning.

June 2010

Ward refurbishment projects, with three adult wards being refurbished at the Gordon Hospital and creation of single bedrooms at Park Royal Hospital to improve privacy.

July 2010

The country’s first NHS Wellbeing Centre opened in Boots at the Chimes Shopping Centre, Uxbridge, providing people with free advice on staying happy, healthy and well.

August 2010

Launch of a major change programme, focused on realigning our clinical services by speciality rather than by geographical areas. This ‘service line management’ model has improved the efficiency of services across many trusts.

February 2011

Hillingdon Community Health and CNWL formally integrated on 1 February, which was the first stage in expanding our range of services to include physical community health.

Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg launched the Government’s new Mental Health Strategy ‘No health without mental health’ at our Marlborough Family Education Service.

April 2011

Camden Provider Services and CNWL integrated on 5 April 2011, further broadening the Trust’s scope and range of services, particularly in the fields of sexual health and HIV.

September 2010

Our older adults’ services were redesigned following a consultation. Inpatient beds were centralised at St Charles Hospital, in order to improve quality and make better use of resources.

October 2010

Events across the Trust to raise awareness on World Mental Health Day. Alongside a celebration in Regents Park, Hillingdon mental health services celebrated black culture with poetry, music and dance.

November 2010

Work has continued on improving information systems, through the roll-out of our electronic patient record system, JADE, with all our adult and older adult services

now live on the system. We also introduced electronic rostering across inpatient units, helping improve efficiency and reduce costs.

December 2010

Our innovation fund set aside £600,000 to invest in developing innovative new services over a two year period. Schemes include a specialist club drug clinic, a sexual dysfunction service and psychiatric intensive care.

January 2011

Working in partnership with Camden Provider Services, a three-year contract to deliver healthcare services at HMP Holloway was secured, including primary care, mental health, substance misuse treatment, maternity services and sexual health.

Plans in place for Trust Recovery CollegeOne of the key objectives of the Government’s new mental health strategy for England, “No health without mental health”, is that ‘more people with mental health problems will recover’.

Recovery is at the heart of our services and over the last two years, the Trust has invested significant resources in developing a programme of recovery workshops and courses, delivered by service users, carers and staff. As part of this exciting programme we plan to launch a Trust Recovery College, located at the new

Trust Headquarters, at Stephenson House. Whilst the hub of the College will be situated at the new HQ, courses will be delivered across all boroughs by service users, carers and staff, and local steering groups will be developed shortly to facilitate this process.

Inspirational stories of recoveryWe are proud to present our new Recovery Stories booklet written and designed by service users who have found employment through our vocational services.

Service users share accounts of their journey of recovery, from initial insecurities through to blossoming confidence, working alongside

Reskilling to recycle

Recovery at the heart of our services

The Recycle-a-bike workshop employs a team of volunteers, made up of service users and local students, to recycle and refurbish abandoned and unwanted bicycles. As well as providing volunteers with important skills that will help them find work, the scheme also helps encourage cycling by providing affordable bikes to the Hillingdon community.

employment specialists to find work and access education opportunities.

The stories are a real inspiration to anyone who finds job-hunting a daunting experience. As one of the service users involved remarked,

having not worked for so long had left me with serious confidence issues about my ability to function in any workplace, and this was causing a barrier to further dealing with my mental health issues. I was given excellent support during the crucial first few weeks, both by the user employment co-ordinator and by the Trust staff involved in providing the placement.

Our first members’ event – an insight into the National Problem Gambling Clinic

12 Inview

On 12 July, the first of a series of exclusive events for members took place, providing members with the opportunity to learn more about the services provided by the Trust and hear from those working at the heart of our services.

Developed in response to feedback received from the Member Engagement Group, the opening event explored the

work of the National Problem Gambling Clinic. The first multidisciplinary NHS clinic in the UK developed specifically for the treatment of people with gambling addiction.

Launched in 2008, the clinic has treated over 900 problem gamblers and is located in the heart of Soho in London, close to a high concentration of casinos and betting shops. Three-quarters of those who

have undergone treatment have experienced a reduction in their gambling below the problem gambling threshold.

Following the event, Stephen Chamberlain, one of the Trust’s Governors and Chair of the Member Engagement Group visited the clinic and was impressed, “firstly by the welcoming environment the clinic provides, but also by the clear focus of the staff on the needs of individuals and finding the most suitable treatment programme for them. I came away feeling that the clinic is at the cutting edge of helping gamblers come to terms with their addiction and I feel that this service reflects on CNWL as being a centre of excellence.”

Member’s mental health blog generates interest

The article generated a huge amount of interest, with the number of visitors to the site jumping from a few hundred to tens of thousands overnight.

As Charlotte says, “something happened that made this blog much more than just a therapeutic tool. My post struck a chord with a number of people and some liked it enough to share it via various other sites, but I still can’t fully account for what happened next. I have been amazed, touched and overwhelmed by the response.”

Charlotte Walker, a CNWL service user from Ealing, runs a mental health blog, http://purplepersuasion.wordpress.com/ which recently featured on The Guardian’s Society Daily page and appears on Mind’s Facebook page, after Charlotte posted an article on:

Ten things not to say to a depressed person.

How long have you been a Governor at CNWL? I was invited to become a CNWL Member in 2008 and was elected as a service user Governor in May 2009.

14 Inview

I have a background in care having worked for 25 years caring and supporting people living with HIV,

before retiring in 2006. I also have a personal interest in this area, having been diagnosed with HIV myself, almost 20 years ago.

Five minutes with…

Stephen Chamberlain, service user Governor

Why did you become a Governor?

Inview 15

I feel strongly about improving healthcare for all and knew that I could make a real difference as a Governor.

What’s it like being a Governor? The work is both challenging and rewarding and I found it a little daunting at first, but with all the support I received, I was soon able to overcome those initial worries.

I find visiting the different CNWL services very fulfilling and I feel that this is a key part of my role. As a Governor I try to be the “eyes and ears” for both service users and staff members. I know other Governors feel the same satisfaction, as these visits give us the chance to feed back our thoughts and

observations to the Board about the services being provided.

Do you have any other interests outside of CNWL? Having lived in Brent for more than 15 years, I am an active member of many local organisations, including: the Brent GP Federation Patient Participation Group, the Synod of the Diocese of Willesden and the local Labour Party branch.

I also love walking as its an excellent form of exercise and allows me to have some quality time for myself. It’s a central part of my own wellbeing and recovery plan. I walk 365 days a year – my two pet dogs demand it!

Tell us something about yourself that people may not know I go to ballet classes for the over 60s with the hope of being cast as one of the Ugly Sisters in a forthcoming production of Cinderella.

I am dyslexic and left school at 14 without knowing how to read or write. I learned how to read and write in my late 20s and went on to gain a B.A. Honours degree in English and Drama.

Any advice for prospective Governors? Being an active member of the Trust has certainly helped improve both my confidence and my health and wellbeing.

Revamped members’ zone and new CNWL websiteThank you to all our members who have participated in the development of the new CNWL website through focus groups and online surveys.

We’re excited to announce that the new site will be ready to launch later this year. We’ll be in touch to let you know when it is ready and please check it out as there will be lots of exciting new features for members.

The new members’ only login area will mean we can provide exclusive information to help you become more involved in the Trust’s work. There will be special invites to events and training, information about how

the Trust is performing and updates on strategic decision-making that is going on. We’ll also be looking to include blog posts from staff, Governors and members where you can discuss the issues facing CNWL and the NHS as a whole.

Other important features include:

Simple information about what to do and who to contact in a crisis

A central hub of resources providing a wealth of information for service users, carers, friends and family, health professionals and partner organisations

A new services directory making it very easy to find out more about different teams and treatment options

We want to make it very simple to contact the right person in the Trust. There is a new ‘Need to speak?’ tool which will help direct feedback, complaints and compliments to the right team or department

If you would like to be kept up to date with how the site is developing please email [email protected] with your name and email address.

Three good reasons why we need a new website:

The new website will reflect the current organisation by bringing together the websites of CNWL, Hillingdon Community Health and Camden Provider Services

Our current website has out-of-date content, it is difficult to navigate and it is not welcoming or appealing

As technology advances we need to keep up. Our new site will be much more interactive, flexible and will help us communicate better.

Dr Mia Paustian, clinical psychologist

I aim to understand my clients’ thoughts and actions to help them make positive changes to manage or overcome their psychological difficulties. I see people experiencing psychological difficulties such as anxiety, depression, phobias or eating disorders. My role typically involves assessing clients’ needs using interviews, questionnaires and observations and deciding on the most appropriate form of treatment, including therapy, counselling or advice.

Behind the name badge

Kate Richards, community occupational therapist

I work with people who have physical, memory, concentration and thinking difficulties as a result of accident or illness, such as multiple sclerosis or traumatic brain injury. I help them to achieve goals that are important to them, which could be daily activities we take for granted such as grocery shopping, making a meal or getting dressed, to more complex activities such as caring for children or succeeding in work or education. Therapy might involve information and advice, repeated task practice or providing adaptive equipment.

Jorge Camarena, art therapist

I use art as a way of helping people to express difficult thoughts and feelings. I don’t teach my clients art and they do not need any artistic skills. Instead, I encourage them to experiment with art techniques and materials like paint, paper and clay, with the aim of helping them to express themselves, gain greater awareness of their feelings, come to terms with difficult times in their lives and move on in a positive way.

In response to feedback received from service users, which asked for more information about certain roles, we’ve called upon a selection of staff members to tell us in their own words what their jobs entail:

Trust wins award for good practice in CPA

The Trust has received an award of Highly Commended at the annual Care Programme Approach Association (CPAA) Good Practice Awards 2011, which recognise excellence and innovation in the implementation of

the Care Programme Approach (CPA).

The award was received in the Excellence in Innovation/Innovative

Practice category for our Local Supervision Audit Tool, which was launched in August 2010 to help staff and managers evaluate qualitative aspects of care planning and related work.

The Trust’s Annual Report and Accounts for 2010/11 were presented at the meeting, which was attended by members, Governors, staff members and representatives from the communities we serve. The theme for this year’s event was hope and recovery and speakers included the Bloomsbury Patients

Network and staff and service users involved in the development of

the Recovery College, who provided attendees

with inspirational examples of both hope and recovery.
