March 1, 2019 PRESS RELEASE GANHRI to welcome more than two hundred NHRIs in Gen eva for the Annual Meeting and to follow-up and review the Global Compact for Migration Geneva, 1 March 2019 - Representatives from National Human Rights Institutions (NHRIs) from all regions of the world will convene in Geneva next week, from 4 to 6 March, for the annual gathering of the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions (GANHRI). The highlight of the week will be the Annual Conference which this year will focus on the role that NHRIs play in the review of the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration (Global Compact). The Global Compact on Migration is a political agreement for improved migration governance at the global, regional and national level, and shared principles to develop migration policies that assure the respect of human rights. It presents a historic opportunity to ensure human rights-based and gender-responsive migration governance. GANHRI to welcome more than two hundred NHRIs in Geneva for the Annual Meeting and to follow-up and review the Global Compact for Migration

Geneva, 1 March 2019 - Representatives from National Human Rights Institutions (NHRIs) from all regions of the world will convene in Geneva next week, from 4 to 6 March, for the annual gathering of the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions (GANHRI). The highlight of the week will be the Annual Conference which this year will focus on the role that NHRIs play in the review of the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration (Global Compact). The Global Compact on Migration is a political agreement for improved migration governance at the global, regional and national level, and shared principles to develop migration policies that assure the respect of human rights. The Conference is hosted by the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions (GANHRI) – in cooperation with the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR).

The Annual Conference will bring together participants from NHRIs from all regions, and their partners from the UN and civil society, as well as Member States, to consider the role and

contributions of NHRIs towards ensuring human rights-based and gender-responsive implementation, follow-up and review of the Global Compact.

The Annual Conference will be preceded by GANHRI institutional meetings and other public events, including:

a side-event on the “Follow-up to the Marrakech Conference and Declaration” co-organized by GANHRI and OHCHR with the co-sponsorship of the Permanent Mission of Norway (4 March, Room XI, 13-15h)

a Knowledge Exchange on good practices for NHRIs “Addressing women’s and girl’s human rights by applying NHRIs’ mandates and functions under the Paris Principles” (5 March, Room XVIII, 10h-13h)

a side-event with the UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to Housing on the “Role on NHRIs in Ensuring Access to justice for the right to housing” (5 March, Room IX, 12h30-13h45)

a side-event on the “Cooperation between election practitioners and NHRIs” co-sponsored by GANHRI, OHCHR and the Carter Center (5 March, Room XI, 13h-15h)

a side-event on the “Role of National Human Rights Institutions in Promoting Human Rights-Based, Gender-Responsive and Child-Sensitive Implementation of the Global Compact for Migration” co-sponsored by GANHRI, UN Women, OHCHR and the Permanent Mission of Norway (6 March, Room XI, 13h-15h)
