A Spectacular Journey in Tanzania Ngorongoro to Lake Natron – on foot….. Including a safari to the Serengeti

(12 Day / 11 Night)

Tanzania has some great Wilderness Areas for walking safaris, and we have spent some time

exploring both Ngorongoro & Serengeti on foot, in order to bring you some great new places

to visit.

This safari is an incredible journey on foot – walking in what has to be amongst the most

spectacular scenery in Africa, plus we enjoy a few days in the Serengeti and Ngorongoro with

some vehicle-based game viewing which is sure to unfold an amazing selection of animals and

birdlife. Our walking safari takes place inside the Ngorongoro Conservation area, exploring

some of the extinct volcanoes, walking through villages, across massive plains and craters – all

the time looking for game, and meeting the local people.

Itinerary Day 1

We depart Arusha at 07h00 and drive to the Ngorongoro Crater passing up over the Rift Valley and climbing to the rim of the crater to enjoy some spectacular views below. We then descend some 700m into the caldera to enjoy a crater tour where you are likely to see most of the big 5! We provide a picnic lunch to be enjoyed in the crater in order to maximize time game viewing today. The Ngorongoro Crater is a natural amphitheatre created about 2 million years ago when the cone of a volcano collapsed into itself, leaving a 100 square mile (259km²) caldron-like cavity. This caldera, protected by a circular unbroken 2,000-foot high rim (610-metres), contains everything necessary for Africa's wildlife to exist and thrive. Early man also flourished around here at Olduvai Gorge, not far from the Ngorongoro Crater. This is known because in 1960, Mary Leakey discovered a 1.75 million-year-old Homo habilis (nicknamed 'The Handyman' for his tool making skills), who represents man’s first step on the ladder of human evolution. The Maasai inhabit this region, and are at liberty to live within the sprawling 2,500 square mile (6,480km²) conservation area around the crater. The Maasai do not cultivate land as they consider it demeaning. Instead they graze cattle, which hold a god-like status in Maasai culture, and in return the cows provide almost everything necessary to live; meat, skin, milk, dung for the walls and floor of their huts. This evening we overnight at a lodge in the area, lunch and dinner included. Day 2

Today we depart Ngorongoro, and continue to the mobile

camp at Nainokanoka Village, which is located just near

Olmoti.

We have two options here, either to do a short walk this afternoon into the Olmoti crater and visit the Munge Falls, or we can do it on day three (but it does make the day rather long). Our camp crew will go ahead of you on all these days and set up the camp, and prepare your meals. As this is a simple hiking itinerary, we provide sleeping bags, mattresses, lightweight tents, shared ablutions (bucket shower and short drop toilet)… as the equipment has to be transported in a small vehicle/by donkeys. You will have dinner and overnight at Nainokanoka Village campsite.

Day 3

This morning we set off on our journey and walk to Bulati campsite. Walking today will be approximately 7.5 plus hours. We walk via Masai villages, and some beautiful scenery with rugged landscapes – across the Embulbul depression – surrounded by hills. An armed NCAA ranger will guide the group, as well as your Wild Frontiers’ walking guide. Day 4

Today we depart Bulati campsite and continue to Empakaai Crater, a spectacular place! Flamingoes are often seen in abundance around the crater lake shoreline. We will also walk down into the crater, (approx 45 mins to an hour down), and spend time there, before returning to the campsite at Empakaai. Overnight camping. Total walking distance approx 10km (7.5 hours), plus the crater visit.

Day 5

We continue our trek to Naiyobi Village and on to Acacia Camp for dinner and overnight. Approximate

walking distance 15km (7.5 hours). Overnight camping.

Acacia Camp is a beautiful, remote site, with Oldoinya Lengai watching peacefully over the site, you almost

feel like you can reach out and touch it!

Day 6

This morning we trek from Acacia camp on the Lake Natron trail, viewing Oldoinyo Lengai on the way to Engaru Sero. The vehicle will be waiting for you at the end of the trail, to transport you to your camp at Lake Natron. Once at camp, you can go to a waterfall and relax in the cool river, or drive out to the shoreline of Lake Natron and see the massive flamingo colonies wading in the shallows. All gear, food and water will be carried on this last day by donkeys and driven by a Maasai warrior.

LAKE NATRON

Wild and remote Lake Natron lies in the northeast of Tanzania in between the Ngorongoro Highlands and Serengeti plains. Situated at the base of Africa's only active volcano Oldonyo L'Engai (Mountain of God), Lake Natron is one of the most alkaline lakes in the world. Home to millions of tiny crustaceans, the lake is a haven for literally thousands of lesser flamingo's and it is one of the most important flamingo breeding grounds on earth. Here it is the landscape rather than the animals that is the attraction - the area around the lake is dry, desolate and hauntingly beautiful

Day 7

Oldoinyo Lengai (3450 meters) is an active volcano on the southern shore of Lake Natron. This impressive peak is revered by the Maasai, as the sacred home of God. A nearly perfect cone, it still erupts occasionally – however, please check when you are booking whether this active volcano is safe to climb, or not. Oldoinyo Lengai is the only active Sodium Carbonite Volcano in the world. For those wishing to climb Oldoinyo Lengai, you will drive to the base of the volcano during the night to begin your climb with a guide. It is a 7- hour/ 15 km strenuous climb. You must complete the climb and descend before the heat becomes too intense. Further details on the climb are available on request. THIS IS AN OPTION AND NOT INCLUDED IN THE ITINERARY. YOU CLIMB DURING THE NIGHT – COMPLETING THE CLIMB AROUND MID-DAY THE FOLLOWING DAY.

This night would therefore be either CLIMBING or overnight at the tented camp.

Day 8

Spend time in the Lake Natron area exploring by vehicle, including a visit to Engare Sero Gorge and the waterfall. Overnight camping.

Day 9

Depart early morning to the Serengeti where you will spend three nights at one of the Serengeti Wilderness Camp including all meals, game drives and bottled water during your stay.

Serengeti Wilderness Camp

or Ndutu Wilderness Camp / Serengeti North

These sister camps are both seasonal camps, which means that they move from time to time and are located in some of the best game viewing sites available. Depending on the time of year, we would recommend which camp to stay at. There are only 12 en-suite tents, with twin beds, solar lighting and hot water bush showers. A large dining tent with bar, as well as a comfortable lounge area with a small reference library, and a typical safari campfire make up the balance of the facilities. The camp runs in as eco-friendly way as possible,

with all waste etc. being disposed of under Park’s

guidelines. Please enquire at the time of booking

as to where the camp will be located.

SERENGETI NATIONAL PARK

Tanzania's oldest and most popular national park, the Serengeti is famed for its annual migration, when some six million hooves pound the open plains, as more than 200,000 zebra and 300,000 Thomson's gazelle join the wildebeest’s trek for fresh grazing. Yet even when the migration is quiet, the Serengeti offers arguably the most scintillating game-viewing in Africa: buffalo, smaller groups of elephant and giraffe, topi, kongoni, impala and Grant’s gazelle. But there is more to Serengeti than large mammals. Gaudy agama lizards and rock hyraxes scuffle around the surfaces of the park’s isolated granite kopjies. A full 100 varieties of dung beetle have been recorded, as have 500-plus bird species, ranging from the outsized ostrich and bizarre secretary bird of the open grassland, to the black eagles that soar effortlessly above the Lobo Hills.

As endearing as the game-viewing is the liberating sense of space that characterizes the Serengeti Plains, stretching across sunburnt savannah to a shimmering golden horizon at the end of the earth. Yet, after the rains, this golden expanse of grass is transformed into an endless green carpet flecked with wildflowers. And there are also wooded hills and towering termite mounds, rivers lined with fig trees and acacia woodland stained orange by dust.
