Class objectives: Learn more about current issues in Japan To learn about skills needed to solve problems. Find out hat nonprofit NGOs actually do to
tackles issues Look at the different approaches and methods. Consider gaps and innovative approaches. Understand the development of the nonprofit
sector in Japan, historically and in the future. To share ideas, skills and know-how to be a
more effective volunteer, staff or supporter.

class.
Readings: for in-class discussion, mostly online, Pay attention to key points § You will spend about 10-20 minutes in each class discussing the
readings. Researching nonprofit NGOs through websites
§ a list of NGOs or projects to research – § Look up 1 or 2 each week from the list but Find others if you like. § We will spend about 10-15 minutes in each class discussing the
NGOs.
Suggestion for people worried about their English ability: write a summary of assignments to make discussion easier
This course does not aim to:
¡ Teach Japanese culture.
¡ Teach English.
¡ Judge, compare or criticize Japanese nonprofit NGOs.
¡ Develop organizational skills.

Part 2 - Research one organization through direct contact § Tell us about their work, their goals, their impacts, etc. § Interview, phone calls, email dialogue.
