Honour the Game Whistle Bear GolfClubToday’s youth have far more extracurricularoptions than generations before them, andwhile the golf industry continues to encour-age junior development programs, golf wasnoticeably absent from a list of the nation’stop 10 organized youth sports, according to a2008 study by Canadian Social Trends.

But Whistle Bear Golf Club in Cambridge,ON, has decided not to stand idly by and risklosing a generation of young players. Toencourage this younger demographic,Whistle Bear started the Junior PerformanceTeam in 2007 as a complement to its GolfPerformance Center, which is geared togolfers of all levels and ages. The JuniorPerformance Team specifically focuses oninstruction and fostering a love of the gamefor 12 young players at a time, boys and girls, ages 5 to 14.

Although most members come to the elitelevel team with a strong foundation in golf, instructors look for qualities that transcend thesport when selecting team members.

“Regardless of their skill level, the mostimportant thing is that they have a desire tobe better at golf,” says Dave Smallwood,CPGA Director of Instruction. “But we alsoconsider criteria outside of their actual skilllevel such as their personality and willingnessto be instructed.”

“We cater to junior golfers,” saysSmallwood. “So they enjoy the game, thecamaraderie and they enjoy our instruction. At the same time, they are also becomingstronger players who will continue to play, hopefully for the rest of their lives.”
