The Hucknall and Linby Mining Community Brass band played in the recent Butlins Mineworkers National Open Brass Band Festival.

This event is one of the largest contests in the country and is held at Butlins Skegness. This year’s event saw no less than 102 bands register to take part in this prestigious event.

Hucknall and Linby who play in the third section of the national brass band grading system played against 15 other bands from across the country. Although not in the prizes, the band were praised for the quality of music in their performance. They were judged in 7th place. A band spokesman said:"The weekend had been a valuable experience for the band both musically and also the bonding of the young players in the social activities provided.”

The band get straight back into work on their next contest piece for the National Regional Heats which are held at Bedworth in March.

For all information about the bands engagements and rehearsals contact their musical director Paul Whyley on 07811448676

Baz and Nicky are Back at The Griffins Head!

Baz and Nicky are back doing what they do best at The Griffins Head, Papplewick. Much to the delight of locals this lovely couple make a welcome return to this delightful village pub.

Chef Baz obviously loves what he does - his eyes light up when he starts to talk about food and the exciting new menu that the pub is introducing. Rather than pack loads of dishes onto the menu, Baz is refining the choices with the focus on quality rather then quantity. There will be about 15 main courses, so still plenty to choose from and something for everyone.

Gary sampled the Pork Three Ways (a Pork Wellington, Chorizo and Pepper Timbale and the most amazing Black Pudding Scotch Egg) and I had French Trim Chicken with Genovesse

(delicious chopped chicken in a herb and creme fraiche sauce), Roasted Vegetables and Saute Potatoes. As ever the presentation was stunning and it was all cooked to perfection.

I love the fact that neither of us had ever had anything like this before. It was a real delight.

Nicky is front of house and explained that they will be hosting plenty of special nights in the forthcoming months. For March the dates for your diary are:Pie Weekend: 2nd - 4th MarchBig Grill Weekend: 9th - 11th MarchThe Different Weekend: 16th - 18th MarchFine Dining Night: 22nd MarchCheck out the blackboard in the pub for future events.

Now we really need to mention Baz’s pies - these are all homemade, even the pastry and they will be the star of the regular Thursday Pie Night coming soon...with 4 or 5 different mouth watering flavours every week including a family pie which is served to the table for you to dish up. What a great idea!

The good news is that plans are afoot for these pies to be sold to order along with artisan breads and the stupendous scotch eggs so that you can enjoy them at home as well as at the pub.

Cosy in the winter and with a great outdoor space for the summer this is a pub for all seasons and now these two are back in residence it really is worth a visit.

As I explained in the last edition I am at best a reluctant gardener, however I harbour romantic notions of tiptoeing through the veggie beds picking plump cabbages and lovely comedy shaped carrots....so we have dedicated a third of our garden over to growing our own food.Using offcuts of tanalised decking and other odds and sods of wood that we found we have fashioned four small raised beds. Digging the soil over and sieving the pebbles out was the best upper body workout I have had in ages. After covering with heavy duty polythene to warm the soil (advice from a library book) we are ready to plan exactly what to grow.Sarah Mulholland, a Grow Your Own enthusiast whose partner discovered allotmenting in his late thirties and now runs a small veg box scheme; Red Earth Organics (01636 812105) has kindly offered the following advice on picking seeds;“Seed buying can be confusing. There are hybrid or heritage seeds, organic and non-oganic. Put simply, hybrids are developed by crossing two different plants from the same family but with different qualities like colour, size or flavour. Heritage (or heirloom) seeds come from plants that were grown historically but have not been used in modern agriculture on a large scale. Heritage plants can be selected for their ability to grow in specific soil or because the flavour or appearance is appealing. From experience I can recommend the following heritage crops:Tomatoes - Brandywine and Ivoty EggBeans - Cosse VioletteLettuce - Marvel of 4 Seasons and Black Seeded SimpsonHybrids are widely available and tend to assure reasonably certain results, predictable crops and familiar flavours, whereas heritage can give less uniform results but offer unusual flavours, colours and variety. By checking the preferred conditions of heritage you can optimise yield by selecting seeds best suited to

your soil and weather.Heritage fruit and vegetables can be relatively easy to grow and by doing so you are also helping to preserve the gene pool and prevent monoculturism.Do be prepared for mixed results. That is both the joy and the frustration of moving from the staple hybrid seeds available everywhere and the delight in discovering a new lettuce, an unfamiliar tomato or beetroot easily outweighs the frustration of a seed batch that does not flourish as you hoped.”WOW! I had no idea....

With raised beds it is better for the soil to rotate crops on a four year cycle and also to grow similar crops in each bed. So we will have carrots, parsnips & celeriac in one bed, kale, calabrese, radish and rocket in another, spinach, swiss chard beetroot and lettuce together and french beans and peas in the last bed. We are growing potatoes in a special grower and plan to use grow bags for tomatoes. After hearing what Sarah had to say about seeds I am going to try and grow some heritage crops as well as hybrids and report back.As I type there is snow on the ground so all work has stopped and we are doing plenty of research using library books and the internet to plan the various types of each vegetable we plan to buy.

One of the issues which has gained real momentum over the year has been the campaign to stop metal theft and many of you in the constituency have been affected whether at work or at home. I got involved with the campaign against metal thieves

last year after a spate of high profile crimes in the constituency. Distressingly, even the churches have been affected – Edwinstowe has been targeted seven times for lead theft and I met with Directly Operated Railways to discuss cable theft on our local lines.

Sherwood is not alone, and so widespread is the problem that the Backbench Business Committee put aside time to discuss the matter in the House last week. Following conversations with a number of constituents, I put forward a number of practical suggestions to bring this practice to an end.

The first is to inform our Police properly so they know exactly what they’re dealing with. For example, there is only one scrap yard licensed to recycle BT cables in the county and the same applies to rail track equipment – so by definition anyone else caught selling these things locally is doing so illegally. Simply briefing our officers properly could make a massive difference.

Another obvious step would be to stop cash transactions at scrap yards which are often done without any proof of ID or proof that the individual legitimately owns the metal being sold. This would help deal with the problem without being a further onerous regulation on

small businesses.

I am consistently wary of increasing legislation or paperwork but in the case of preventing scrap metal theft, there is a strong argument for improving licensing. Currently, the Council issues licenses to carry scrap metal. These licenses are cheap and relatively easy to obtain and do little to stop enterprising toerags setting up shop out the back of a transit van.

Licenses need to be more expensive and better enforced, with specific registration plates attached to each one. In terms of the increased cost, I think legitimate businesses would welcome an improved, if more expensive, system if it prevented them being undercut by unlicensed dealers.

My hope is that this debate will move us forward quickly and I feel that Government is on side and keen to rectify the situation. The Home Secretary has recently announced that the Government considers that legislation is the only sustainable, long term solution to the growing menace of metal theft. There is an urgent need to make stealing metal less attractive to criminals, and tackling the stolen metal market will act as a significant deterrent.

Metal theft is more than an inconvenience or petty crime, it is damaging communities and hard working businesses but I was particularly appalled by reports of theft from war memorials, something the Prime Minister has condemned personally. Times are hard but there is no excuse for scrap metal theft and I will keep fighting to bring it to an end. My surgeries continue to be held on the second Saturday of the month in Hucknall and the fourth Friday at Dukeries – please ring the office 0115 968 1186 – if you would like to make and appointment.

Mark Spencer:Metal Theft

I cannot encourage you strongly enough to get in touch: I was elected to represent Sherwood and that’s exactly what I want to do to the best of my ability. If you need help, if there is an issue local or national that you think I should be aware of or if I can support your group or project, let me know at [email protected] or on 0115 968 1186. One of my greatest pleasures in travelling about the British Isles is hearing the different dialects and accents, but I feel television and radio have brought about changes to the spoken word that is gradually altering our language. Of course this is not always bad, since a living language needs to change and adapt. Imagine what it would sound like if we still spoke as Chaucer or Shakespeare did. Maybe though we should consider writing down sayings, mottos, poems, etc. in the local dialect so they will be saved for future generations, especially the ones remembered from our grandparents time.

How do you spell dialect words? Who knows? For those Hucknallites newer to the town, I have tried to spell the words so that you can say them out loud without needing a full translation but if you are still baffled ask some of the older residents. I feel sure they will be pleased to help. Do you think our town used to be called Hucknall Torkard because that’s what the natives were good at - torkinard?

Do you ever get asked when you are away from home where you live? People seem to have great difficulty in being able to nail our accent to the area and when they try to perform D.H.Lawrence’s stories on T.V. the poor actors struggle very hard with the local dialect. We have a big advantage over the actors though because - “Weevbinlontahtotorkproppa”.

To find out more about events in your area

visit www.nottinghamshire.police.uk and enter your postcode in the postcode

search tool.

We are now approaching the end of the financial year and I am pleased to say we have continued the impress ive

crime reductions and detections into 2012.

In this area, house burglary has dropped another 8% and we have arrested someone in a third of all offences. Robberies have fallen by another 11% and vehicle crime is also down by 18%.

You have been instrumental in helping us make this happen and I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for all your contributions.

Whether you have told us about suspicious activity or wiped the sat nav sucker marks off your windscreen, it has all had an impact on the prevention and detection of crime.

However, in the past year we have seen a slight rise in the number of sheds and outbuildings being burgled and the number of thefts from shops. Many of the thefts have been either incidents of shoplifting or ornaments and bicycles being stolen from gardens.

We don’t want this trend to continue and have an ongoing operation in Hucknall town centre to tackle this. All the shops are now members of the Shopwatch Scheme and have radios which link directly into the local Policing Teams.

Prolific offenders are being given banning orders from the town centre and we currently have

another two antisocial behaviour orders being applied for with the help of our new Ashfield District Council Antisocial Behaviour caseworkers.

We work very closely with the council and other partners and I am really proud of the joint work we do around supporting victims and keeping you all safe.

The Street Pastors have also continued their excellent work and have now extended the patrol times.

Neighbourhood Alert has also gone from strength to strength with nearly 1,000 members in this area. Please visit the site and register – it’s completely free and I will send you regular updates on what is happening and crime alerts. To sign up go to www.nottinghamshirealert.co.uk

As a result of the Neighbourhood Priority Surveys that you have all completed we have now set the new priorities for the first quarter of 2012. There are three for Hucknall and three for the rural area. Details of the priorities along with our plans to tackle them can be viewed online at http://www.nottinghamshire.police.uk/local/mansfield_ashfield/ashfield_south/ashfield_south/

LOVELY LAMB!Lamb is a tasty and versatile meat. Here are three recipes using different cuts, all

easy, delicious and inexpensive. Enjoy!

Moroccan Meatballs

500g minced lamb1 x onion - finely chopped2 x garlic cloves - finely chopped2 tsp ground cumin2 tsp ground coriander1 tsp cinnamonbreadcrumbs - good handful1 egg1 dsp tomato pureesalt & pepper

methodEither use a food processor or manually mix the ingredients until well blended. Roll into walnut size balls and shallow fry until browned all over. Delicious with couscous and tomato sauce or stuffed in pitta bread with coleslaw.

500g minced lamb2 tbsp olive oil (plus oil for brushing)2 aubergines (500g) - sliced1 onion - sliced2 garlic - finely chopped400g tin chopped tomatoes1 tsp cinnamonred wine - splash50g butter, 30g flour & 350ml milk1 egg - beaten100g grated cheese (cheddar or parmesan)nutmeg - gratedsalt & pepper

methodPre-heat oven to 200°C. Brush augergine slices both sides with olive oil and place on a large baking sheet. Bake for 10 mins then turn and bake for another 10 mins. They should be soft and golden brown. Meanwhile - gently fry the onion and garlic til soft. Turn heat up and add the lamb. Break up and brown. Then add the cinnamon and red wine - boil til liquid is absorbed. Add tinned tomatoes and season to taste. Simmer gently for 20 mins while you make the white sauce. In a small pan melt butter - add flour and stir for a minute. Remove from heat and gradually stir in milk. Over a medium heat stir until the sauce is smooth and thick. Add 2/3 of the cheese and 1 tsp grated nutmeg. Leave to cool slightly while you assemble to dish. Grease an ovenproof dish and place a layer of aubergine slices on the bottom. Pour over the lamb sauce and top with another layer of aubergines. Then beat the egg into the white sauce. Pour over the top of the dish and sprinkle with the remaining cheese. Bake for 45 mins in oven.

MOUSSAKA Lamb and Spinach CurryThis recipe is based on a dish from a book called “Curry”.3 tbsp sunflower oil300g boneless lamb leg steaks - cubed350g bag spinach2 x onions - chopped1 x garlic clove - crushed400g tin tomatoes1 tsp chilli flakes1 tsp turmeric1 tsp cumin seedssalt to taste

methodHeat the oil in a pan and cook the onions until soft. Add garlic, tomatoes, chilli, cumin seeds, turmeric and lamb. Cover and cook gently for 40 mins. Meanwhile wash spinach and place in a pan until wilted. Drain and once cooled, chop. After 40 mins add spinach to the pan. Remove lid and simmer for a further few minutes until you have a thick sauce. Check for seasoning and serve with rice.
