Journeyman: Eric Clapton — A Photographic Narrative Gene Shaw

Introduction by Anthony DeCurtis and Foreword by John “Crash” Matos

For over five decades, Eric Clapton has been one of rock’s premiere guitarists — and since the early 1980s, famed music photographer Gene Shaw has been capturing great moments from Slowhand’s electrifying career, on stage and off. More than 125 of Shaw’s rare color and black-and-white photographs and his unique, insider’s recollections provide a fan’s per-spective of many legendary musical events. Clapton’s performance at the ARMS benefit, his show with Elton John at Shea Stadium, his early ’90s stint at the Royal Albert Hall, and his current Crossroads Guitar Festivals are all highlighted. This beautiful hardcover volume also includes an Introduction by Rolling Stone writer Anthony DeCurtis and a Foreword by John “Crash” Matos, artist and designer of some of Clapton’s signature guitars.

Edward Detmold (1883–1957) and his twin brother, Maurice, excelled in the depictions of animals. The Fables of Aesop is widely considered the finest title in an oeuvre that includes illustrations for The Jungle Book and An Edwardian Bestiary, both available in Dover editions.

The Songs and Sonnets of William Shakespeare William Shakespeare

Illustrated by Charles Robinson

From Ophelia’s lament for lost love to Ariel’s joyful paean to fairy life, this elegant collector’s edition encompasses songs from Shakespeare’s plays as well as all of the Bard’s sonnets. The book is graced with 12 full-color plates by Charles Robinson, a well-known representative of England’s Golden Age of book illus-tration. Other attractive features include an index of first lines and decorative endpapers, reproduced in full color from the original 1915 edition.

Reprint of the Duckworth, London, 1915 edi-tion. 288pp. 7 x 10.

Author Profile

“He was not of an age, but for all time,” declared Ben Jonson of his contemporary William Shakespeare (1564–1616). Jonson’s praise is especially prescient, since at the turn of the 17th century Shakespeare was but one of many popular London playwrights and none of his dramas were printed in his lifetime. The reason so many of his works survive is because two of his actor friends, with the assistance of Jonson, assembled and published the First Folio edition of 1623.

Artist Profile

Charles Robinson (1870–1937) belonged to a family of distinguished British illustrators that included his brothers Thomas Heath Robinson and William Heath Robinson. He provided images for many classics of children’s literature, including A Child’s Garden of Verses, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, Grimm’s Fairy Tales, and The Secret Garden. Other Dover books in which his works appear include another Calla Edition, The Big Book of Nursery Rhymes, as well as Songs of Innocence and Shakespeare Illustrated.
