Our 50th Anniversary Spring Show and Sale was a big
success. A summary of the
show along with a budget will be sent
out shortly.
President’s Message Soraya Silvestri, President
Spring is finally here and summer is around the corner! Hallelujah!!
I hope everyone has been busy creating their beautiful art.
Our 50th Anniversary Spring Show and Sale was a big success.Thank
you to team lead: Kat(hy) McClure, and the rest of the team, Vera Van
Baaren, Tina Petrovicz, Brian Seed, Patrick Mason, Brenda van Kats,
and Marie Arsenault.
A summary of the show along with a budget will be sent out shortly.
An article about the show was in the EMC Barrhaven, featuring our
1st/2nd and 3rd place jurors picks. As well, another article about our
new Gallery 50 in the Minto Complex was recently published in the
Barrhaven News. Erika Farkas was featured. Erika has graciously
volunteered to post all ‘News’ items on our web site under our new tab
‘NFAL in the News’. Check it out.
Speaking of our web site, we are looking into getting a contract for
web maintenance, support and backup. We have been without support
for some time and this will be a significant benefit.
In other news, NFAL’s Professional Development meetings are under
way. The first meeting was held on Tuesday, April 29 in the Heritage
Room of the Nepean Sportsplex. Look at our calendar on page 15 for
when the next meeting is to take place. Admission to members is free
and non-members pay $5.00, which will be discounted off a new
membership.
Also, NFAL’s Drop-In Painting Sessions are well on their way as well.
More information on page 12.This is a great opportunity to meet other
artists and paint along with them.
I’m looking forward to seeing you all at Members’ Night on Monday,
June 9 from 7:00-9:00 p.m. Please mark your calendars and plan to
attend. As this is our 50th Anniversary, we are planning to celebrate
with wine, goodies, and cake!
Looking forward, our Fall Show and Sale will be held at the Ukrainian
Banquet Hall, on November 28-30. Please mark your calendars. You
don’t want to miss this one!
And looking way into the future, our next Spring Show and Sale will
be at the Ukrainian Banquet Hall on April 24-26th, 2015.
Finally, please consider volunteering. It is a satisfying feeling to help.
You’ll be doing yourself a favour!
A very big thank you to all who do.

We have a new page online where
you will find the latest media
excerpts about NFAL activities and
events.
Web Site Report Erika Farkas, Web Site Coordinator
A new page named NFAL in the News has been created on our web
site. This is the page where you will find the latest media excerpts
about NFAL activities and events. Also new, under the Events menu,
you will find an Event Calendar, a Past Events page, and a page with
Event Pictures. These pages are also available to the general public.
The News section in the members’ area can also be used as an
advertisement page to post your upcoming show, or anything else you
may want to advertise or share with the other members. If you would
like to post your event or ad, send an e-mail to Erika Farkas at
We have an online member gallery that could be better utilized and
updated. Information about the online gallery can be found in the
Member’s Area. New members will need a user account to edit their
online gallery. Whether you are a new member, or you need help with
creating/editing your online gallery, or with any other web site issues,
please contact Erika Farkas at [email protected].
And visit the site at www.nepeanfinearts.com to keep up to date on

Despite the cold weather so far, the feature wall is a harbinger of
warmer temperatures, sunshine, beautiful tulips and gardening ahead!
Work by Tina Petrovicz and Beth Shepherd draws attention to the
threat of colony collapse disorder and its threat to bees that must
pollinate all the spring flowers.
On a more cheerful note, this is the first time Rebecca ever displayed
her work in public. Congratulations Rebecca and we look forward to
seeing a lot more at the gallery. Here is Rebecca’s triptych Splurge.

Thanks to Janis Fulton, who replaced Jane Cass on registration, and
Erika Farkas and Rebecca Viezel, who helped Garry Logue and me in
hanging the show.
It takes longer to hang the show if the work is not properly wired. I
would like to remind artists that all art submitted to the NFAL Gallery
must be securely wired. Wire should be attached approximately one
quarter to one third distance from the top of the frame. The wire should
be knotted around the hook and twisted, then taped to cover sharp
ends. The wire should be slack but not loose. The security hangers at
the gallery are hard on the wire and I recommend using heavy grade
multi-strand picture hanging wire. If you have any questions about
preparing your painting for display, feel free to contact me.
Here are the other artworks on display.

The July-August Exhibition will run from June 28 to September 13 and

The Gallery Team welcomes new members. In addition to Jane Cass,

would like to welcome two new members to the NFAL Gallery Team:
Tina Petrovicz and Margaret Grant. Tina has been a regular contributor
to the gallery with her paintings, prints and photographs. Margaret has
a background in art education.

Wallack’s is holding FREE demo days at its three locations
presented by Francoise Issaly.
Professional Development
The first in a series of Professional Development meetings took place
on Tuesday April 29 from 7:00 pm to 9:30 pm in the Heritage Room of
the Visual Arts Centre of the Nepean Sportsplex on Woodroffe
Avenue. Our guest artist was Susan Ashbrook, an acrylic artist from
Rosecliff Cottage Studio in Cumberland. Susan teaches classes,
workshops and has been published in North Light. She represents the
Wilcox School of Colour in Canada and the U.S.
www.susanashbrook.com.
This meeting and presentation was free to all
members and a $5 charge for non-members.
The event was a great success! Susan showed us
many ways to use various mediums, from basic gels
to pouring medium, and as she built on each painting,
finishing some with gel skins, the audience was
wowed! Her passion as she created was infectious
and I know that many of us will be experimenting
and bringing more texture into our artwork.
Our next Professional Development meeting will be
held at the end of October and we will keep you
posted on what is planned. These sessions are free for
members; no club business is conducted!
Drop-In Painting
We are compiling a list of members interested in drop-in painting
sessions. We have heard from several artists and are hoping to increase
these numbers. Please take a moment to consider the benefits of a
painting group for getting to know your fellow artists and join us. The
sessions will be held at the Creative Arts Centre in Bells Corners and
will cost $5.00 per session. More information will be coming shortly.
Product Demo
All acrylic artists: Wallack’s is holding FREE demo days at its three

June 1, 2014 at the Orleans location (613-830-2400).

We need volunteers for our gallery team
to help with planning,
organizing and operating our
expanded gallery program.
Volunteer Corner
We would like to thank all our volunteers and remind members that all
NFAL’s operations are carried out by busy people like you who have
taken on jobs on your behalf. Please check out the position duties and
determine whether you can help out. By volunteering, you can help
make NFAL the best and most progressive artist-run organization in
the City!
Nominating Committee Members
We are seeking volunteers for our Nominating Committee to assist the
Executive with ongoing staffing and to prepare for this year’s AGM.
Under our bylaws, NFAL must have a nominating committee to
present the slate of officers for the next year (2014-15). In consultation
with the executive, the committee will carry out recruiting for open
positions and present a full slate of officers for membership approval at
the AGM. The Nominating Committee currently comprises Diane
Groulx and David Farrar and requires at least one additional member.
If you are interested in any of these positions, please express interest to
Soraya Silvestri at [email protected].
Gallery Team Members:
NFAL is seeking people with a variety of skills and availabilities for
the gallery team to help with planning, organizing and operating our
expanded gallery program. We need people to help with hanging
shows, one person to coordinate the jurying process, one person with
computer skills to help with the registration and paperwork, and
another to manage publicity, including the newsletter gallery report,
website gallery page and announcements to local media.
Our NFAL gallery program supports artists and enlivens and enriches
community spaces. Please express your interest to Beth at
