In an era of LinkedIn, Facebook, Google + and a hundred other ways to electronically interact, the question often comes up…why network in person when you can do so much more electronically? At the Chamber we ask ourselves this question regularly. We want to deliver maximum value to our members, and if that value is created for you electronically, shouldn’t we be emphasizing those channels?

The answer is yes, but with a caveat. We are, as I’m sure you know, an active voice on Twitter, with our Facebook page, and through our e-mail updates. We know that you value your time, and if we can deliver content effectively and comprehensively, but letting you decide when to read it, we’ve achieved at least one objective. But we also have another objective, one that defies keyboards and monitors, Tweets, and postings.

We believe that networking is still very much about meeting someone, talking about the weather (this is Minnesota after all), complaining about the traffic, and making that personal connection that makes future business opportunities that much the easier. Our monthly membership meetings, our public affairs series, our business socials, and for that matter, all of our events are designed to create networking opportunities for you. We want you to meet new people, to share your business challenges and objectives, and to gain from others the visibility and connections that will help you succeed.

When you attend a meeting, you may be interested in the speaker, and we hope you are, but we also want you to maximize your networking time. Come a few minutes early, stay a few minutes afterwards, introduce yourself to a stranger, and most of all, build your personal and professional network!

When Networking Matters

Page 3: Nexus July 2012

NEXUS | Saint Paul Area Chamber of Commerce3

A bit shy? Ask a Chamber employee when you walk in to introduce you to someone. It’s our job, and we will be happy to do so. Not shy? Then have at it! Networking yields results, and attending a Chamber meeting puts another arrow in your quiver as you increase your business options.

Electronic means will definitely play an increasingly important role in our approach, but there will always be a place for face-to-face interaction. Come to a meeting, meet some new folks, and spread the word about who you are and what your business needs and wants. You won’t be disappointed.

Muzak: Elevator Music to Global Leader

1920’s - General Squier (Muzak founder) discovered a way to transmit music over utility lines to businesses across the nation.

1930’s - Muzak incorporates and General Squier gives the name Muzak from his favorite hobby: music, and favorite company: Kodak. Muzak installs music in elevators to calm nerves of people riding an elevator for the first time.

1940’s - During World War II music increased the productivity of “Rosie the Riveter” so much that 1400+ warehouses added music. Muzak also supplied music to the troops for enjoyment.

1950’s - Muzak was the first national company to use a franchise system to sell its products and services. President Dwight D. Eisenhower was the first president to pump Muzak into the West Wing. NASA used

Muzak in many of its space missions to soothe astronauts and occupy periods of inactivity.

1960’s - Audio architects were hired to create programs for specific industries: retail, dining, office, factory, etc. Programs were created to boost or reduce heart rate, and create an experience.

1980’s - Began creating custom playlists for clients.

1990’s - Introduced drive thru solutions for restaurants.

2000’s - Serving 335,000 locations in 15 countries. Developed a digital signage department.

2010 - Muzak was purchased by Mood Media for $345 million, including $305 million in cash.

By Nick Schmitz, Account Executive, MuzakMuzak, sometimes termed “the elevator music company,” today stands as the global leader in sight, sound, and scent technologies.
