This dwarf cultivar was spotted by Marco at nearby Rosedale Nurseries and he recognized it as an exceptional specimen. Magnolia acuminata x denudate ‘Golden Gala’ (Magnolia Cultivar)A tribute to Wave Hill’s Golden Anniversary, this hybrid is a cross between Magnolia acuminata and M. denudata. Found by Pepe Maynard at Windy Hill Farm, it is one of the sensible cultivars whose late-blooming flowers are more likely to avoid frost. Sun, average soil. Zone 6Courtesy of Pepe Maynard

Larix decidua ‘Varied Directions’ (Weeping European Larch) Introduced at the University of Connecticut, this cultivar has a pyramidal shape with variable weeping or horizontal branches and drooping branchlets, imparting an undulating effect. A deciduous conifer, the larch’s green needles turn golden in autumn. This plant is expected to mature at 15’ tall and 15’ wide, but no two are alike! Currently, this specimen is 9–10’ tall. Gleditsia triacanthos f. inermis ‘Emerald Cascade’ (Weeping Honey Locust) Very pretty, lacy, emerald-green foliage on gracefully arching branches make this a great addition to the limited list of small, pendulous trees. A rich yellow in fall, this tree is a seedless male, expected to mature at 10’ tall and 8’ wide. This beautiful specimen is currently 7’ tall. Full sun. Abies nordmanniana ‘Pendula’ (Weeping Nordmann Spruce) A dwarf evergreen conifer with gracefully drooping branches, this spruce’s dense needles are bright green and soft to the touch. It prefers well-drained soil. Full sun. Zone 4Courtesy of Judy and Michael Steinhardt

Cercis canadensis The Rising Sun™ (Redbud)The Rising Sun™ redbud is one of the most stunning plants, with foliage that starts peachy apricot and matures through chartreuse-yellow to a final deep-green. All three color phases present at the same time in late spring and summer, to spectacular effect. The blooms are the classic, redbud lavender in April and May. Pair of Thujopsis dolabrata ‘Variegata’ (Variegated Hiba Arborvitae) Although not particularly notable from a distance, the large-scale, flattened sprays of these trees’ foliage are distinctly beautiful and a favorite at Wave Hill. Quercus dentata ‘Pinnatifida’ (Cut-leaved Daimyo Oak) The foliage of this extremely rare and unique Japanese oak is fernlike, with leaves that are deeply divided into narrow lobes. Trio of Stewartia rostratas (Chinese Stewartias)A trio of fine, small trees for summer bloom. This Chinese Stewartia has two-inch cups of white flowers with orange stamens, bringing fragrance as well as beauty to the garden. An easily cultivated member of the genus, it grows 15 to 30 feet tall. Unlike the more familiar S. sinensis, it has fissured bark and good sun tolerance. The blooms are followed by distinctive, beaked (rostrate), five-ribbed capsule fruits that adorn the tree through winter. The Chinese Stewartia is especially striking in fall, when its leaves turn yellow, red and purple. Prefers moist, highly organic soil, sun to part sun. Zone 6 Courtesy of Judy and Michael Steinhardt

Large Jade Tree from Wave Hill’s Cactus and Succulent HouseCrassula ovata (C. argentea is a synonym) is native to South Africa’s Eastern Cape and has been grown as a popular house plant in Europe and America. This specimen is possibly 40 years old, purchased in the early days when Marco was building the greenhouse collection. Commonly known as jade plant, friendship tree, lucky plant or money tree, this tender succulent offers small, pinkish-white flowers in winter. Maggy’s Collection of Vividly Colored PlantsMaggy Geiger shares with Marco a love of all plants bright and beautiful. Not for the timid, this collection curated by Maggie demonstrates her credo that more color means more fun in your garden.• Acer palmatum ‘Shaina’ is a pretty, upright, dwarf Japanese maple with

small, deeply cut leaves of bright red that mature to deep, reddish-purple and magenta in the fall. With age, the canopy broadens beautifully. This plant will grow to five feet in 10 years. Sun, filtered sun. Zone 5

• Loropetalum Garnet Fire™ is a shrub whose red, tassel-like flowers stand out against burgundy leaves in early spring, and continue to hold their color well through the summer. It matures to four to five feet high and wide. Sun, partial shade. Zone 7, but happy in a container.

• Clematis ‘Princess Diana’ is a deciduous climber in the Texensis group of clematis. Mature plants bloom profusely from midsummer to early autumn, with luminous, tulip-shaped, pink flowers and stamens of cream and maroon. Moist, well-drained soil. Full sun to partial shade. Zone 5

• Crape Myrtle, Lagerstroemia ‘PILAC-V’ Midnight Magic™ PPAF has purplemaroon leaves and many dark pink flowers that begin blooming just when you need them in July and remain colorful into September. Problem-free to grow with its dramatic foliage and blooms, this new cultivar is outstanding. Full sun. Zone 6

• Acer palmatum dissectum ‘Baby Lace’ Grafted as a 24” standard, this slowgrowing dwarf has a delicate swirl of leaves colored pinkish red fading to bronze-green. Autumn color is even more reddish with hints of pink and orange. Sun, filtered sun; Zone 5

Asarum ‘Laughing Ghost’ (Laughing Ghost Wild Ginger)Wild ginger is one of the most appealing woodland groundcovers. ‘Laughing Ghost’ has bold, green leaves speckled with silver, and curious jug-like flowers in spring. Grown as connoisseur’s plants in Japan and happily by Marco here in the northeast, this rare cultivar may eventually form a clump about eight inches high and a foot across, like the one chortling in the corner of the Wave Hill Wild Garden. Fruit of the Quercus ceramicus, a very rare, earthy oak speciesThese larger-than-life acorns were created by master garden sculptor artist Marcia Donahue using layers of naturally colored clay. The acorns are nestled in a “nut bowl” made of a hollowed-out ceramic, faux-bois log.

Collection of Golden Plants Five golden trees to celebrate Wave Hill’s 50th anniversary and illuminate your landscape.• Cornus kousa ‘Summer Gold’ is an outstanding sport of the Chinese

dogwood, with springtime white flowers amidst golden-edged leaves, developing flashes of pink in summer. The autumn foliage is crimson, orange and cream. With its upright habit and compact stature, it is a lovely, all-season tree. Part sun to full sun. Zone 5

• Sciadopitys verticillata ‘Ann Haddow’ is unusual for its golden-yellow, long, flat needles, making this Japanese umbrella pine prized by conifer collectors. Slow growing, it prefers well-drained loamy soil. Full to partial sun. Zone 5

• Pseudolarix amabilis is a deciduous conifer, slow-growing and broadly conical with horizontal branching and pendulous branchlets. This larch often grows as wide as it does tall, to 30 to 40 feet. It offers glorious, golden-amber, fall color to end the season. Full sun. Zone 4

• Picea orientalis ‘Firefly’ has short needles emerging brilliant-yellow in spring, softening as they age. This oriental spruce has a dense, pyramidal shape, and grow three to six inches per year to 50 feet. Full sun to part shade. Zone 4

• Tsuga canadesis ‘Aurea Compacta’ is a slower-growing Canadian hemlock with graceful branches, its needles a bright gold where the sun touches them. Broadly upright, it grows three to six inches per year. Sun to part sun; protect from hot, dry extremes. Zone 3

Snowdrops from Marco The wild species and garden forms of the genus Galanthus are widely admired for their late winter flowers that are delicate and welcome harbingers of spring. Marco most likely acquired these from his plantsman friend and snowdrop aficionado Hitch Lyman and grew them on for years in his own garden.
