(Suitable for new and established groups) FELLOWSHIP TIME1. Share something you’re grateful to the LORD      for this week.2.    Share a prayer request with the group.3. Pray together; short specific prayers related         to 1) and 2).STUDY TIME4.   Read the passage of scripture.5. Read it again, this time perhaps in a different        translation.6. Ask: “What’s it all about?” (Looking for one       or two summary sentences)7.    Ask: “What does it say about Jesus?”8. Ask: “Is there a challenge or command here       that applies to me?”9. Matthew 16:13-20 1. What is the Church? There are TWO elements or parts of the church: the church UNIVERSAL and the church LOCAL. “The Church of Jesus Christ (UNIVERSAL) that meets at (@) Margate Baptist (LOCAL). Romans 10:9 ; 1 John 3:10 2. Where are we now and where should we be heading? At A, needing to move to B! The characteristics of a church at A are: CLUB…service to its members is the top priorityCLOSED…to outsiders and to changeINWARD…focused in on US, and suspicious of THEM. A church at B is MISSIONAL…members sacrifice for the sake of non-membersOPEN…to strangers and to changeOUTWARD…focused on the LOST, those who need love and salvation. 3. Matthew 16 and Jesus’ teaching about his church. The church is a group of people A. Who know Jesus is more than one among many 

(v. 13/14)B. Who confess, like Peter did, “Jesus is the Messiah, son       of the living God” (v. 16)C. Who follow and are anchored on the teaching of Christ     and his Apostles (v. 18)D. Who hold the keys to the kingdom (v. 19) So what? SOMETHING…WE KNOW; WE CONFESS; WE FOLLOW; WE HOLD.
