JANUARY: A BRIEF HISTORY January, painting by Leandro Bassano January is “officially” known as the coldest month of the year in the Northern Hemisphere, which by the way (and not surprisingly so) includes our “grand” City of Cincinnati, Ohio. A few of us can surely still remember the cold- est day on record here, as January 18th, 1977 (during the Blizzard of 1977). I, myself was in my Senior Year of High School, and boy did my friends and I miss a lot of school that Winter (but we were still able to make up enough of those lost snow days and graduate on time, in June). January did not actually exist as a Month until approximately 700 B.C. when it (and Febru- ary), were added to the Roman (pre Julian) Cal- endar by the 2nd King of Rome, Numa Pontilius. January 1st (unofficially) replaced March 1st as the first day of the New Year but was not actu- ally celebrated as such until the Year 153 B.C. The “official” January 1st as New Years Day was declared by none other than the Great Roman Soldier and Political Leader, Julius Caesar in the Year 46 B.C. Julius Caesar implemented the Julian (Solar- based) Calendar to replace the previous Roman (Lunar-based) Calendar which had grown very inaccurate over time. During the Middle Ages, the Celebration of January 1st as New Years Day was “temporar - ily” abolished until the implementation of the Gregorian Calendar in the Year 1582 A.D. At that time, only Catholic Countries adopted the Gregorian Calendar, thereby restoring January 1st as New Years Day. For another 170 years Protestant Countries, such as England and all parts of the British Empire (including the Ameri- can Colonies) continued to observe New Years Day on March 1st of every year, until the Year 1752 A.D. when they formally adopted the Gre- gorian Calendar with January 1st as New Years Day.
